FTB sending incorrect annual tax fee notices - How to handle?
Has anyone else gotten notices from the FTB for annual tax fees that are wrong? I just got two notices and I'm so confused. One is for a bill I already paid and the other is for an LLC that wasn't even active during the year they're billing for. I'm about to call them but I'm dreading it. Any advice on how to handle this?

Just a heads up, if you're calling the FTB, be prepared to wait. Last time I called, I was on hold for over 3 hours before I got through to someone. Might want to have some snacks and entertainment ready lol

Pro tip: use a headset and do some chores while you wait. At least you'll be productive while dealing with their BS.

Another tip is to try calling at different times of the day. Sometimes there are less busy hours.

I had a similar issue last year. Turns out there was a glitch in their system that was sending out incorrect notices to a bunch of people. It took forever to sort out, but they eventually fixed it. Might be worth asking if they're aware of any system issues when you call.

Oh wow, that's good to know. I'll definitely ask about that. How long did it take for them to resolve it for you?

It took about 2 months all told. But once they realized it was a system issue, things moved pretty quick. Just stay on top of them!

Being aware of possible system glitches is important. Sometimes it's just a matter of the right person looking into it.

I've been dealing with the FTB for months now over a similar issue. Here's what I've learned: 1. Always communicate in writing when possible. It creates a paper trail. 2. If you do call, take detailed notes including the name of who you spoke to and when. 3. Be persistent. Sometimes you have to explain your situation multiple times to different people. 4. Don't be afraid to escalate to a supervisor if you're not getting anywhere. 5. Check if your local taxpayer advocate office can help. They sometimes can intervene in tricky cases. Good luck! The system is broken, but hang in there.

This is super helpful, thank you! I hadn't even thought about the taxpayer advocate office. I'll definitely look into that if my call doesn't go well.

Another point to add is to always remain courteous and professional, even if you're frustrated. It can sometimes help in getting a more favorable response.

Have you considered hiring a tax professional to deal with this? Sometimes it's worth paying someone who knows how to navigate the system. Might save you time and headaches in the long run.

It's sad but true. The complexity of the tax systems feels like it's designed to be confusing.

While Claimyr offers a service that connects you to representatives without the hassle of waiting on hold, it's worth noting that not everyone may find the service cost-effective. For some, $20 could be a significant amount just for a call, especially when trying to budget. However, for those who value their time or have been unable to connect with the FTB after multiple attempts, Claimyr may be a viable option. It's crucial to weigh the cost versus the time saved and consider the urgency of your situation.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. https://www.claimyr.com

Sounds sketchy af. Is this legit? $20 seems steep just to make a phone call.

I get the skepticism, but it's totally legit. I was desperate after being on hold for hours and it actually worked. Worth it to me to save time and frustration.

How long did it take for them to get someone on the line? I'm considering trying this out.

It took about 45 minutes for me, but I've heard it can vary. Still waaaaay faster than doing it yourself.

I've used Claimyr too, and it does seem a bit costly but if you value your time, it might be worth it. Just make sure you're prepared with all your information once you get through.

Anyone else feel like we need a complete overhaul of the tax system? Its getting ridiculous how complicated and error-prone it is. We're all just trying to run our businesses and the government keeps throwing wrenches in the works. 😤

Preach! 🙌 I spend more time dealing with tax nonsense than actually running my business some months.

Totally agree. But good luck getting politicians to actually do anything about it. They're all in the pockets of big corporations anyway.

Have you guys heard about the Fair Tax proposal? It's not perfect but it's a start towards simplifying things.

Ugh, the FTB is such a nightmare to deal with. I've been in your shoes before. Make sure you have all your documents ready before you call. Proof of payment for the bill you already paid and any paperwork showing your LLC wasn't active. Stay calm but be firm with them. Good luck!

Also, keep a notepad handy to document the call details. It helps to have records in case you need to follow up.

Classic government incompetence. They probably have their records all messed up. I'd suggest writing a formal letter disputing both charges and send it certified mail. That way you have a paper trail if things go south.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm gonna try calling first, but if that doesn't work out I'll definitely consider sending a letter. Do you have any tips for what to include in it?

Sure thing! Include copies of your proof of payment for the first bill, and any documentation showing your LLC was inactive for the year in question. Be clear and concise, and request a written response. And don't forget to keep copies of everything you send!

Have you tried checking your account online? Sometimes the notices are outdated and your account will show the correct info. Might save you a phone call.

This is a good point. Online records are often more up-to-date than paper notices.
