FTB Notice Claims I Owe Money Already Paid - How to Resolve?

I just got a notice from the state tax board saying I owe money, but I already paid it! The money was taken out of my bank account and everything. Has anyone else dealt with this? What should I do when I call them? I'm so frustrated right now.

Plot twist: what if they actually owe YOU money? 🤔 Wouldn't that be a nice surprise!

Classic government inefficiency. They take our money fast enough but can't keep track of it. smh

Preach! 🙌 It's like they're playing hot potato with our hard-earned cash

Maybe if we paid them in Monopoly money they'd keep better track 🤣

Navigating issues with the state tax board can indeed be challenging, but there are structured ways to handle these situations. First, it's crucial to maintain a calm and composed demeanor when contacting them. As many have suggested, having all relevant documentation ready, such as bank statements and previous correspondence, is essential. Additionally, using services like Claimyr can expedite reaching a live representative, though they come with costs. While the service can be valuable for those willing to pay for reduced wait times, it's important to weigh whether the convenience justifies the expense. Furthermore, exploring digital avenues like social media for support can sometimes yield quicker responses. Maintaining a detailed log of communications will also aid in resolving such disputes effectively. Ultimately, patience and perseverance are key, along with leveraging both traditional and modern communication channels to get the resolution needed.

This happened to me last year! It's probably just a delay in their system updating. Call them and explain calmly. They should be able to see the payment on their end eventually.

How long did it take for them to fix it? I'm in the same boat and its been weeks!

It took about 2 weeks for me. But I had to call twice to get it sorted. Stay persistent!

It's frustrating, but these things can take time. Persistence is key. Also, it helps to speak to someone higher up if the problem isn't resolved quickly.

Pro tip: If you can't get through on the phone, try reaching out on social media. Sometimes their Twitter support is surprisingly responsive.

This is actually a great idea. I've had luck with company customer service on Twitter before. They're often more responsive there.

Anyone else feel like we need a complete overhaul of the tax system? This stuff happens way too often.

Agreed! It's 2023, why isn't this all automated and error-free by now?

Careful what you wish for. Knowing the government, they'd probably make it worse 🤡

Maybe we should all just start paying our taxes in Bitcoin. That'll confuse 'em! 😆

This is why I always pay my taxes with a credit card. Easier to track and dispute if needed.

But don't they charge a fee for using a credit card?

NeonNinja

Yeah, there's a small fee, but the peace of mind is worth it to me. Plus, points! 💳✨

Credit cards do offer a layer of protection and it's easier to dispute unauthorized charges.

Ugh, I've been there. It's like they don't even check their own records 🙄 Make sure you have your bank statement ready when you call. And be prepared to wait on hold FOREVER.

Having your bank statement ready is key. It gives you proof you can use to dispute their claim. I also recommend having any confirmation numbers from the transaction handy.

Good point! Online accounts often reflect real-time data and can be more accurate than mailed notices.

I found a way to get through to a real person without waiting forever. There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of frustration. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous!

I get the skepticism, but it worked for me. Saved me a ton of time and headache. Worth every penny imo.

I've used Claimyr before too. It's convenient but not everyone may want to pay. It depends on how much you value your time.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your documents: bank statements, previous tax returns, and the notice you received. 2. Call the tax board and explain the situation calmly. 3. Ask them to check their records for your payment. 4. If they can't find it, offer to send proof of payment. 5. Get the name and ID number of the person you speak with. 6. Ask for a confirmation number for your call. 7. Follow up with a written letter if the issue isn't resolved immediately. Remember, stay patient but firm. Good luck!

Great advice! I'd add: keep a log of all your calls and interactions. It might come in handy later.

I agree with keeping detailed records. It's surprising how often having a log of calls helps!
