Need to repay NY unemployment overpayment but no instructions on how to pay?
Back in February I received a notification that I was overpaid about $1450 in benefits. It's now July and they haven't taken any money out of my account or sent me any repayment instructions. I've checked my email, regular mail, and my online portal - nothing! I just want to pay it back and be done with it. The thought of owing money to the government is stressing me out, and I'm worried they'll suddenly hit me with penalties or something. Has anyone dealt with this before? How do I actually send them the money they say I owe?

•I've tried calling like 15 times and couldn't get through. What number are you using?

•There's a service called Claimyr that will wait on hold for you and call when they get a rep. Best few bucks I ever spent to get my issues fixed! https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•It actually works! You go to claimyr.com, they call and wait on hold, then connect you when they get a real person. Talking to an agent got my issue fixed in minutes after weeks of trying.

•I literally just told you I used it? It saved me from losing my mind trying to get through. Got a live person in about 40 mins instead of me trying to call all day for weeks.

I was in the exact same situation last year. I solved it using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they called and waited on hold for me, then connected me with a live agent who processed my payment right away. Talking to a real human was the best way to handle it, and it saved me DAYS of frustration. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch! Just a service that waits on hold so you don't have to. When they get a human, they call you. It's the fastest way to solve unemployment issues when phones are constantly busy.

•I was skeptical too but I used it last month when my benefits stopped suddenly. Got through to an agent who fixed it immediately. Before that I spent WEEKS trying to call myself.

Look at your online account portal. There should be a section for overpayments with instructions. If not, check your spam folder for emails from ny unemployment. They might have sent something that got filtered.

I had this exact same problem! The system is sooo messed up. They told me I owed $2200 but never sent instructions. I ended up having to mail a check to their main office with my claim ID number written in the memo line. You can find the address on their website. Make sure you get a tracking number and receipt when you mail it!!

•Thanks! Did they send you any kind of confirmation after they received your payment?

Ella Knight
•Lol nope! Thats y I made sure to get tracking. I had to call them 3 weeks later to confirm they got it. The system is a mess.

•This is why I used claimyr.com to get someone on the phone. I wasn't about to mail money without talking to someone first! Got my overpayment sorted in one call.

They'll eventually take it from your tax refund if you don't pay it, but with interest and penalties. Best to handle it now. My coworker ignored an overpayment notice and they garnished his wages AND took his tax refund the next year.

OMG NY unemployment is the absolute WORST with communication! The same thing happened to me with a $900 overpayment. Here's what I did to finally solve it: First, I tried calling repeatedly but could never get through - their phone system is a nightmare. After wasting days trying to call with no luck, I used claimyr.com which got me connected to an actual person. Once I had a real human on the phone, they explained that I needed to: 1. Submit the payment through their online portal (which wasn't obvious at all) 2. Include my claim ID number with the payment 3. Request a receipt confirmation Without talking to someone directly, I would've never figured it out because nothing was explained in their notices. The agent I spoke with also put a note on my account showing I was actively trying to resolve the issue, which prevented any penalties while I was sorting it out. I was honestly shocked at how quickly it was resolved once I got through to someone. The whole process with the agent took maybe 15 minutes after weeks of frustration. DO NOT just mail a check without confirming the process first - I've heard horror stories of payments getting lost in their system and people being charged again.

•It worked perfectly! I don't remember the exact cost but it was worth every penny to finally get my issue resolved. Just having peace of mind knowing my overpayment was properly handled saved me so much stress.

I've heard they're doing a big system upgrade this summer so a lot of these notices are going out but the collection process is paused. You might not be able to pay it back until they finish the upgrade.

Did you ever certify while getting paid through a job? That's usually why overpayments happen.

Lucy Taylor
•No, I actually got a new job and stopped certifying right away. That's what's confusing about this whole thing.

•They probably counted your final week wrong. Same thing happened to me and I had to pay back the last payment. System is broken af

If you don't have anything in writing don't pay anything! They need to send you official documentation with appeal rights. Could be a scam.

•I saw it on my official account portal though, so I know it's real. Just no instructions on how to actually pay it.

You can request a waiver if the overpayment wasn't your fault. Worth looking into before you pay anything.

•YES THIS! My sister got a waiver approved and didn't have to pay back $3k. Definitely check if you qualify.

•I got a waiver too! You have to request it in writing though, and still need to talk to someone. I used claimyr.com to get through to a rep who helped me with the waiver paperwork.

Pro tip: document EVERYTHING. Screenshot the overpayment notice on your portal, note down every time you try to contact them, and if you do make a payment keep all receipts for at least 5 years. NY unemployment is notorious for losing records of payments.

•Thanks for the advice, I'm definitely taking screenshots of everything now.
