FTB surprise: New 2023 tax liability after 2022 agreement - What to do?
I thought I had everything sorted out with my taxes, but now I'm seeing a new liability for 2023. I already have an agreement for 2022, and suddenly there's this new amount of $6,428.58 for 2023. Has anyone else dealt with something like this? I'm not sure how to handle it or what questions to ask when I call the FTB. Any advice would be appreciated!

Ugh, the FTB can be such a pain sometimes. I've been in a similar situation before. Here's what I'd suggest: 1. Get all your docs ready before you call. Payment plan details, letters from FTB, everything. 2. Ask if the new liability can be added to your existing plan. 3. Check if there are any penalties or interest. 4. Find out why this new amount popped up if you thought everything was settled. 5. Take notes during the call! Good luck, OP! Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely gather all my documents before calling. Do you think I should ask about waiving any penalties or interest?

Absolutely! Always ask about waiving penalties and interest. Sometimes they'll do it if you have a good reason or if it's your first time. Doesn't hurt to try!

This is solid advice. I'd add: ask for a detailed breakdown of the new liability. Sometimes there are errors in their calculations.

Guys, it's not that bad if you stay organized. Just keep good records and you'll be fine.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the FTB. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work?

Idk man, paying to talk to the government feels wrong. Shouldn't this be free?

@profile 8 I get what you're saying, but my time is worth more than $20. Plus, the stress it saved me was priceless.

Have you checked your tax transcripts online? Sometimes you can find more info there about where these new charges are coming from.

This happened to me last year! Turns out there was a discrepancy between what I reported and what my employer reported. Double-check all your W-2s and 1099s against what you filed.

Oh wow, I hadn't even thought of that. I'll definitely look into it. Thanks for the tip!

OP, whatever you do, DON'T ignore this. I made that mistake and ended up owing waaaaay more because of interest and penalties. Deal with it asap!

^^^^ THIS. The FTB doesn't mess around. Better to face it head-on.

Am I the only one who thinks the whole tax system needs an overhaul? 🤔 Like, why is it so complicated that we need to call and ask for explanations all the time?

You're preaching to the choir, my friend. The system is designed to keep us confused and compliant. 🐑

Careful with that tinfoil hat there, buddy. It's not a conspiracy, just bureaucracy at its finest. 🙄
