Unemployment Overpayment: Wait to File 2023 Taxes?

I got a letter saying I was overpaid unemployment benefits in 2023. Not sure if I should wait to file my taxes until this is sorted out or just file now and deal with amendments later. The overpayment is around $3k and I'm worried about how this affects my tax situation. Anyone deal with this before?

Tax pro here - Don't wait to file. Report what's on your 1099G. If the unemployment office adjusts the overpayment, they'll send you a corrected 1099G and you can file an amendment then. Waiting could result in penalties if you file late.

What if they take forever to send the corrected form? My states unemployment office is literally the worst 🤮

You'll still be better off filing on time. Document everything and keep all correspondence from the unemployment office.

Hey! I actually found this amazing tool called taxr.ai that helped me figure out my complicated unemployment situation. It costs $4.99 but totally worth it - it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what to do. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

How exactly does it work? Does it just read transcripts or what?

It does way more than just read transcripts! It spots potential delays, explains codes, and even gives specific steps to resolve issues. Best $5 I ever spent fr fr 💯

You should definately appeal the overpayment decision first! I won my appeal and didn't have to pay anything back

How long did the appeal take? Did you use a lawyer?

Watch out for scammers claiming they can fix this for you. Only work with the unemployment office directly or use legit services

My situation got resolved but took like 6 months ngl. Just keep ALL your paperwork and screenshots of everything. Document everything.
