EDD Overpayment Letter - What to Do?

I just got a letter in the mail saying I was overpaid for unemployment benefits. Has anyone else dealt with this? What should I do? I'm freaking out because I don't have the money to pay it back right now.

I found a way to solve unemployment overpayment appeal issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo-kyLsAgjs

Ugh, I'm in the same boat. Got a letter last week saying I owe $3000. It's ridiculous how they can just decide this months after the fact. Anyone know if there's a way to appeal?

Yeah, you can appeal! You have 30 days from the date on the letter to file an appeal. Don't wait, do it ASAP!

Thanks for the info! Do you know where I can find the appeal form? The EDD website is such a maze 🙄

This happened to me last year. It turns out they made a mistake on their end. I had to call and explain my situation. After a few weeks of back and forth, they finally admitted their error and waived the overpayment. Don't give up!

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

$20 just to make a phone call? That's highway robbery! 😤

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo

Here's what you need to do: 1. Don't panic. This is more common than you think. 2. Carefully review the letter. Make sure all the information is correct. 3. Gather all your documentation from when you filed for unemployment. 4. If you believe the overpayment claim is an error, file an appeal within 30 days. 5. If the claim is correct, you can request a waiver if repayment would cause financial hardship. 6. Consider setting up a payment plan if you can't pay it all at once. 7. Whatever you do, don't ignore the letter. That'll only make things worse. Remember, you have rights. Don't let EDD bully you. If you need help, consider contacting a legal aid organization specializing in unemployment issues.

Quick question - does anyone know if accepting the overpayment and setting up a payment plan affects your credit score?

It shouldn't affect your credit score as long as you stick to the payment plan. But if you default, then it might be reported.
