UI Overpayment: Need advice on follow-up and appeal process

Hey everyone, I need some advice. I just found out I have an overpayment from unemployment insurance and I'm not sure what to do. Has anyone dealt with this before? What's the best way to follow up on this? I'm worried about how much I might owe and if there's any way to appeal or set up a payment plan. Any help would be appreciated!

I found a way to solve unemployment insurance overpayment issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0cbl3dRfgA

Ugh, I've been there. It's such a headache dealing with UI overpayments. First thing you should do is call them ASAP to get all the details. Make sure you understand exactly why they say you were overpaid and how much they think you owe.

Yeah, the phone lines are a nightmare. I actually found a way around that. There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials through the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a real person picks up. Costs $20 but saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Wait, for real? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

I used it last month, can confirm it works. Felt kinda weird paying to talk to UI but it beat calling for days

I went through this last year. Here's what I learned: 1. Don't panic! Overpayments are common and there are options. 2. Request a written explanation of the overpayment. They should provide details on why it happened. 3. You have the right to appeal if you think it's a mistake. There's usually a deadline, so act fast. 4. If it's legit, you can often set up a payment plan. They're usually pretty flexible. 5. In some cases, you might be eligible for a waiver if repayment would cause financial hardship. 6. Document EVERYTHING. Keep records of all communication. 7. Consider talking to a legal aid organization if you're really stuck. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed response! This is really helpful. Do you know how long the appeal process usually takes?

Glad I could help! The appeal process can vary, but in my experience it took about 6-8 weeks. Make sure you gather all your documentation before you start.

This is great advice! I'd add that if you do set up a payment plan, try to get it in writing. Learned that one the hard way 😅

Quick question - does anyone know if overpayments affect your credit score? I'm worried about that on top of everything else.

Max Knight

From what I understand, it won't affect your credit unless they send it to collections. But don't quote me on that, maybe double check with UI directly

It didn't affect mine, but I set up a payment plan right away. Probably best to address it ASAP to be safe.

Hey OP, just wondering - did you receive any notices before finding out about the overpayment? I'm paranoid I might have missed something in my mail now 😬

Pro tip: If you end up having to pay back, see if you can do it with a credit card that gives cash back or travel points. Might as well get something out of this mess 🤷‍♂️

Modern problems require modern solutions 😂 I like how you think!

Careful with that tho, make sure you can pay off the card balance. Those interest rates can be killer

Honestly, I'd rather talk to an actual robot. At least it might be more efficient 🤖

Has anyone successfully gotten an overpayment waived? I'm really struggling financially and don't know how I'll pay this back...

I did! It took a lot of paperwork and proof of financial hardship, but it's possible. Don't give up hope!

I'm in the process of applying for a waiver now. It's a lot of work but worth a shot if you're really in a tough spot.

Just a heads up, I've heard they're cracking down on overpayments lately. Make sure you respond to everything they send you, even if it seems repetitive. Better safe than sorry!
