EDD Disability Overpayment Notice - Need Advice ASAP!

Hey everyone, I just got hit with an overpayment notice from disability. Has anyone else dealt with this? I'm freaking out about how I'm gonna pay this back. Any advice?

Geoff Richards

Ugh, I'm in the same boat. Got slapped with a $3000 overpayment last month. It's such a nightmare dealing with the EDD. Have you tried calling them to explain your situation?

I've been trying to call for days but can't get through. It's so frustrating! How did you manage to reach someone?

Honestly, it took me like 50 tries over a week. Keep at it, eventually you'll get lucky and get through to a human. Good luck!

Pro tip: call right when they open. I got through on my third try doing that. 🤞

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/0UZGuPWGErg

I get the skepticism, but it seriously worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

Can confirm, I used it too. Felt weird paying but it got me through when nothing else worked.

Have you checked if you qualify for a waiver? Sometimes they'll waive the overpayment if it wasn't your fault and paying it back would cause financial hardship.

THIS SYSTEM IS BROKEN AF 🤬 Why do we always have to jump through hoops just to get basic help? It's like they want us to give up.

Preach! 🙌 The whole thing is a joke. They make it so complicated on purpose.

Calm down, Karen. It's not perfect but at least we have a system. Try living somewhere with no safety net.

Whatever, bootlicker. Just because it could be worse doesn't mean we shouldnt demand better. 🙄

Here's what you need to know about disability overpayments: 1. Don't panic! You have options. 2. Review the notice carefully. Sometimes there are errors. 3. If it's correct, you can request a payment plan. 4. Check if you qualify for a waiver (financial hardship or not your fault). 5. You have the right to appeal within 30 days. 6. Document everything and keep copies of all correspondence. 7. If you can't get through on the phone, try visiting an EDD office in person. Remember, you're not alone in this. Many people face overpayments and get through it. Stay persistent!

Thank you so much for this detailed info! Really helpful. Do you know how long the appeal process usually takes?

Appeals can take anywhere from 30 days to several months, depending on the complexity and current backlog. But filing an appeal can buy you some time before you have to start repaying.
