IRS: Accidentally applied Q4 2023 estimated tax payment to 2024. How to fix?
I messed up big time with my estimated tax payment. I paid $7,500 through direct pay in January, but I accidentally applied it to the wrong tax year. It was supposed to be for Q4 2023, but I labeled it as 2024. My accountant told me I need to call the IRS to fix this. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Any advice on how to handle this when I talk to them?

Hey, don't stress too much. Mistakes happen. The IRS deals with this stuff all the time. Just be patient and persistent, and you'll get it sorted out.

Anyone else find it ironic that we're required to pay taxes on time, but when the IRS owes us money or needs to fix something, it takes forever? 🙄

Seriously! If we're late, we get hit with penalties. But they can take their sweet time 🙄

This is why I always double and triple check everything when I'm dealing with taxes. One small mistake can cause such a headache.

I had a similar issue last year. It took forever to get through to someone, but once I did, they were actually pretty helpful. Just be patient and explain everything clearly.

How long did it take for them to fix it after you talked to someone?

It took about 3 weeks for everything to be sorted out. They had to transfer me to a different department, but it all worked out in the end.

Oof, that's a tough one. The IRS can be a real pain to deal with. Make sure you have all your payment details ready when you call - date, amount, and any confirmation numbers. Good luck!

Have you tried reaching out to your local congressperson's office? Sometimes they can help expedite these kinds of issues with federal agencies.

I didn't even know that was an option. How would I go about doing that?

Just google your congressperson and look for a "constituent services" section on their website. They often have staff dedicated to helping with federal agency issues.

Have you tried reaching out to the Taxpayer Advocate Service? They might be able to help if you can't get through to the IRS directly.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

If it saves you from being on hold forever, it might be worth the money. Depends on how much you value your time.

Plot twist: what if you just leave it for 2024 and adjust your 2023 payments accordingly? Might be easier than dealing with the IRS 🤔

Have you considered hiring a tax attorney? Might be worth it for such a large amount.

It depends on how comfortable you are handling it yourself. A tax attorney could save you time and stress, but they're not cheap.

If you're struggling to reach the IRS or need a quicker resolution, consider using Claimyr as mentioned. It has been validated by others in this community and can save you time. However, it's important to weigh the cost against the time and frustration saved. Additionally, while tools like Claimyr provide a solution, they highlight the need for systemic improvements in accessing IRS help. Always consider alternative options like the Taxpayer Advocate Service or local congressional offices for potential assistance.

Pro tip: use the IRS website to check your account transcripts. It might show the misapplied payment and you could potentially request a correction online.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your payment information (date, amount, confirmation number) 2. Call the IRS early in the morning, right when they open 3. Be prepared to wait on hold for a long time 4. Explain the situation clearly and ask for the payment to be reallocated to the correct year 5. Get the name and badge number of the person you speak with 6. Ask for a confirmation number or reference number for the change 7. Follow up in writing if possible Remember, stay calm and be polite. The person on the other end is just doing their job. Good luck!
