Will EDD automatically send a new Money Network card or do we need to call after reapplying?

My husband just got approved for unemployment benefits yesterday after being laid off from his construction job. He previously had an EDD debit card from Bank of America back in 2020-2021 when construction slowed down during COVID, but we've moved twice since then and have no idea where that card is. I'm wondering if EDD will automatically issue him a new Money Network card (since they don't use BofA anymore) or if we need to call and request one? His UI Online account is showing a claim balance and weekly benefit amount, but no payment information yet. Don't want to miss the card in the mail or wait weeks for money that isn't coming! Anyone dealt with this recently?

They will automatically send a new Money Network card to the address on file. It typically takes 7-10 business days after your first certification is processed and shows paid (not just pending). Make sure your current address is updated in UI Online before you certify for the first time!

Thank you! His first certification isn't due until this Sunday, so I'll double check the address today. Do you happen to know if the old BofA card number has anything to do with the new Money Network card? Or is it completely separate?

From my experience when I reapplied last month, you'll automatically get a new Money Network card. The old BofA cards are completely phased out - they switched vendors in 2022. I misplaced my old card too and was worried, but everything worked fine. You might want to call and check your address though - EDD's systems don't always update correctly even when you enter things online.

How long did it take for your money Network card to arive? Mines been 3 weeks and still nothing!!!

Mine took exactly 9 business days after my payment status changed from pending to paid. If it's been 3 weeks since your payment was approved (not just your claim), you should definitely call. There's a separate number just for card issues: 1-800-480-3287

When I reapplied last year all my payments got stuck in pending for WEEKS and I couldn't reach anyone. I tried the regular number 927 times (not exaggerating). Finally I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual EDD rep in 20 minutes! claimyr.com - they have a demo video too: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep told me they automatically send new Money Network cards but ONLY after your first payment is processed. My address was wrong in their system which is why mine was delayed.

I've never heard of this service but I might need it if we run into problems! Thanks for sharing. Did they end up resending your card once they fixed your address?

Yes! They fixed my address and the card came about 8 days later. The rep also released my pending payments which was the bigger issue. Definitely recommend calling if you don't see a payment status change to 'paid' within a few days after certifying.

THEY DONT TELL YOU THIS but the Money Network card gets mailed automatically BUT only after your first certification is processed AND APPROVED. If your certification gets stuck in pending (happens to like 40% of people), they won't mail the card yet. Also the cards come from Tennessee not California so watch for a plain envelope that looks like junk mail!!!

This is SO TRUE! I threw away my Money Network card thinking it was junk mail, then had to pay $15 to get a replacement. It comes in a white envelope with barely any markings. The return address says "Money Network" in tiny letters.

just went thru this my dude lost his old card too. new one comes automatically but took like 12 days after first payment hit. u can also set up direct deposit now if u want its in ui online under payment preferences once ur claim is active

I had the same issue last year and my friend had it the year before. EDD changed from Bank of America to Money Network in July 2022 so everyone gets new cards now. Your husband should get a new card automatically after his first payment is processed. If he already certified and the payment says "paid" (not pending) and it's been more than 10 business days, then you should definitely call.

Thank you! That timeline helps a lot. He hasn't certified yet but will this weekend, so I'll mark my calendar for about 2 weeks from Monday to expect the card.

Also, when you do get the Money Network card, be sure to set up the online account right away. You can transfer funds directly to your bank account for free (unlike the old BofA cards that charged fees). The website is moneynetwork.com/edd and they also have an app that's pretty decent for tracking payments.

Make sure you watch your mail VERY carefully! I recently went through this exact situation and nearly threw away my Money Network card because the envelope looks like junk mail. It's a plain white envelope with very minimal EDD markings. My husband actually rescued it from our recycle bin! The actual timing was about 9 days after my first payment switched from pending to paid status.

One more thing - if your husband's first certification gets stuck in pending (which happens pretty often with new claims), the card won't be mailed until that's resolved. In my case, I had to do a phone interview for eligibility before my payment was released. Once that was done and my status changed to paid, the card came about 10 days later.

That's good to know. Did you get notified about the phone interview through UI Online or did they mail you something? I'm trying to make sure we don't miss any important communications.

They sent a notice through UI Online (in the inbox section) AND mailed a letter with the date/time. The letter came about 3 days after it appeared online. The interview was scheduled about 2 weeks out. If he has a straightforward claim (laid off, enough work history), he might not need an interview at all.

I just went through this same situation 2 months ago! Yes, EDD will automatically send a new Money Network card to your address on file, but it only happens AFTER your first certification is processed and shows "paid" status (not just pending). Since your husband's claim just got approved yesterday, he'll need to wait until his first certification period (sounds like this Sunday) and then wait for that payment to process. The card typically arrives 7-10 business days after the payment status changes to "paid." Definitely double-check that your current address is correct in UI Online before he certifies - that's the most common reason for delays. And like others mentioned, watch for a plain white envelope that looks like junk mail!

This is super helpful, thank you! I'm relieved to hear it's automatic once the payment processes. Quick question - did your card come with any activation instructions, or do you just start using it right away? Also, is there a way to track the card shipment or do you just have to wait and watch the mail?

@Statiia Aarssizan Perfect timing on this info! I m'actually in a similar boat - just got approved after being laid off from my retail job last month. One thing I m'curious about - do you know if there s'any way to expedite the card delivery? I ve'heard some people mention calling EDD to request rush delivery, but I m'not sure if that s'actually an option or just wishful thinking. Also, when you got your card, did it come with a temporary PIN or do you set that up online?

Just wanted to add my recent experience to help! My partner went through this exact situation in January after his restaurant closed. EDD automatically sent the new Money Network card about 8 days after his first payment switched to "paid" status. The key thing we learned is that the card comes in a really plain envelope - honestly looked like a credit card offer or something we'd normally toss. Also, make sure to enable text notifications in UI Online if you haven't already - they'll text you when your payment status changes, which helps you know when to start watching for the card. One last tip: if you end up needing to call EDD for any reason, try calling right at 8 AM when they open - that's when we had the best luck getting through without waiting hours.

Thanks for sharing your experience! The text notification tip is really smart - I didn't even know that was an option. I just checked and found the setting under "Contact Preferences" in UI Online. Also appreciate the 8 AM calling tip, though I'm hoping we won't need to call if everything goes smoothly. Did your partner's card work immediately or did he have to activate it first? I want to make sure we're prepared for when ours arrives.

I went through this exact same situation when I reapplied in December! Your husband will definitely get a new Money Network card automatically - the old Bank of America cards are completely obsolete now. The timing is key though: the card only gets mailed AFTER his first certification is processed and shows "paid" status, not just when his claim is approved. So he'll certify this Sunday, then you'll want to watch his payment status in UI Online. Once it switches from "pending" to "paid" (usually takes 2-3 days), expect the card to arrive 7-10 business days after that. Major tip: the envelope looks like total junk mail - plain white with barely visible "Money Network" text. I almost threw mine away! Also definitely verify your address is correct in UI Online before he certifies, because that's where they'll ship it. Good luck!

This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you for the detailed timeline - it really helps to know what to expect. I'm definitely going to double-check our address in UI Online today before he certifies on Sunday. The junk mail warning seems to be a common theme here, so I'll make sure to examine every piece of mail carefully for the next few weeks. Quick question - when your card arrived, did it come with clear activation instructions, or is that something you handle through the Money Network website? Just want to be ready to get it set up as soon as it arrives!

I just went through this exact same process last month when I got laid off from my warehouse job! Your husband will automatically get a new Money Network card, but here's the important part everyone's touched on - it ONLY gets sent after his first certification processes and shows "PAID" not just "pending." Since he certifies this Sunday, watch his UI Online account closely. The payment usually takes 1-3 business days to switch from pending to paid, then the card ships and takes another 7-10 business days to arrive. So realistically you're looking at about 2 weeks from when he certifies. Two critical things: 1) Definitely verify your current address in UI Online TODAY before he certifies - that's where 90% of card delays come from, and 2) The card comes in the most boring white envelope you've ever seen. Seriously looks like a scam letter. I watched my neighbor throw theirs in the trash thinking it was junk mail! Also pro tip - once you get the card, immediately set up the Money Network online account at moneynetwork.com/edd. You can transfer money to your regular bank for free, unlike those old BofA cards that nickel and dimed you with fees. The whole system is actually way better now!

This is such comprehensive advice, thank you! I really appreciate the realistic 2-week timeline from certification to card arrival - that helps me set proper expectations instead of panicking if it doesn't show up in a few days. I'm definitely going to check our address right now before my husband certifies on Sunday. The envelope warning is noted - I'll be examining every piece of mail like it contains gold for the next few weeks! One quick follow-up question: when you set up the Money Network online account, did you need any special information beyond what's on the card itself? Like a social security number or anything from the UI Online account? Just want to gather everything we might need ahead of time so we can get it set up immediately when the card arrives.

I just went through this exact situation 3 months ago when I got laid off from my manufacturing job! Your husband will definitely get a new Money Network card automatically, but timing is everything. The card only ships AFTER his first certification is processed AND shows "paid" status in UI Online - not just approved or pending. Here's what to expect: He'll certify this Sunday, then watch for the payment status to change from "pending" to "paid" (usually 2-3 business days). Once it shows paid, the card typically arrives 7-10 business days later. So you're looking at roughly 10-14 days total from certification to card in mailbox. SUPER important tips: 1) Double-check your address in UI Online RIGHT NOW before he certifies - incorrect addresses cause most delays, 2) The card comes in the most generic white envelope imaginable - seriously looks like a credit card scam. I almost tossed mine! Look for tiny "Money Network" text on the return address. Once you get it, immediately set up the online account at moneynetwork.com/edd - you can transfer funds to your bank for FREE (way better than those old BofA cards with their fees). Also enable text notifications in UI Online so you get alerts when payment statuses change. Makes tracking everything so much easier! The whole Money Network system is actually a huge improvement over the old Bank of America setup. Just be patient with the initial timing and watch that mail like a hawk!
