Will EDD automatically send a new Money Network card or do we need to call after reapplying?

My husband just got approved for unemployment benefits yesterday after being laid off from his construction job. He previously had an EDD debit card from Bank of America back in 2020-2021 when construction slowed down during COVID, but we've moved twice since then and have no idea where that card is. I'm wondering if EDD will automatically issue him a new Money Network card (since they don't use BofA anymore) or if we need to call and request one? His UI Online account is showing a claim balance and weekly benefit amount, but no payment information yet. Don't want to miss the card in the mail or wait weeks for money that isn't coming! Anyone dealt with this recently?

They will automatically send a new Money Network card to the address on file. It typically takes 7-10 business days after your first certification is processed and shows paid (not just pending). Make sure your current address is updated in UI Online before you certify for the first time!

Thank you! His first certification isn't due until this Sunday, so I'll double check the address today. Do you happen to know if the old BofA card number has anything to do with the new Money Network card? Or is it completely separate?

From my experience when I reapplied last month, you'll automatically get a new Money Network card. The old BofA cards are completely phased out - they switched vendors in 2022. I misplaced my old card too and was worried, but everything worked fine. You might want to call and check your address though - EDD's systems don't always update correctly even when you enter things online.

How long did it take for your money Network card to arive? Mines been 3 weeks and still nothing!!!

Mine took exactly 9 business days after my payment status changed from pending to paid. If it's been 3 weeks since your payment was approved (not just your claim), you should definitely call. There's a separate number just for card issues: 1-800-480-3287

When I reapplied last year all my payments got stuck in pending for WEEKS and I couldn't reach anyone. I tried the regular number 927 times (not exaggerating). Finally I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual EDD rep in 20 minutes! claimyr.com - they have a demo video too: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep told me they automatically send new Money Network cards but ONLY after your first payment is processed. My address was wrong in their system which is why mine was delayed.

I've never heard of this service but I might need it if we run into problems! Thanks for sharing. Did they end up resending your card once they fixed your address?

Yes! They fixed my address and the card came about 8 days later. The rep also released my pending payments which was the bigger issue. Definitely recommend calling if you don't see a payment status change to 'paid' within a few days after certifying.

THEY DONT TELL YOU THIS but the Money Network card gets mailed automatically BUT only after your first certification is processed AND APPROVED. If your certification gets stuck in pending (happens to like 40% of people), they won't mail the card yet. Also the cards come from Tennessee not California so watch for a plain envelope that looks like junk mail!!!

This is SO TRUE! I threw away my Money Network card thinking it was junk mail, then had to pay $15 to get a replacement. It comes in a white envelope with barely any markings. The return address says "Money Network" in tiny letters.

I had the same issue last year and my friend had it the year before. EDD changed from Bank of America to Money Network in July 2022 so everyone gets new cards now. Your husband should get a new card automatically after his first payment is processed. If he already certified and the payment says "paid" (not pending) and it's been more than 10 business days, then you should definitely call.

Thank you! That timeline helps a lot. He hasn't certified yet but will this weekend, so I'll mark my calendar for about 2 weeks from Monday to expect the card.

Also, when you do get the Money Network card, be sure to set up the online account right away. You can transfer funds directly to your bank account for free (unlike the old BofA cards that charged fees). The website is moneynetwork.com/edd and they also have an app that's pretty decent for tracking payments.

Make sure you watch your mail VERY carefully! I recently went through this exact situation and nearly threw away my Money Network card because the envelope looks like junk mail. It's a plain white envelope with very minimal EDD markings. My husband actually rescued it from our recycle bin! The actual timing was about 9 days after my first payment switched from pending to paid status.

One more thing - if your husband's first certification gets stuck in pending (which happens pretty often with new claims), the card won't be mailed until that's resolved. In my case, I had to do a phone interview for eligibility before my payment was released. Once that was done and my status changed to paid, the card came about 10 days later.

That's good to know. Did you get notified about the phone interview through UI Online or did they mail you something? I'm trying to make sure we don't miss any important communications.

They sent a notice through UI Online (in the inbox section) AND mailed a letter with the date/time. The letter came about 3 days after it appeared online. The interview was scheduled about 2 weeks out. If he has a straightforward claim (laid off, enough work history), he might not need an interview at all.
