Never received Money Network card after new EDD claim - certified but no payments!

I'm so frustrated right now! I was on unemployment back in 2022, but my benefits ended and I went back to work. Fast forward to now - I lost my retail management position last month and filed a new claim with EDD. I've already certified for two weeks and both show as 'paid' in my UI Online account, but I haven't received any actual money. I never got a new Money Network card for this claim! I tried calling Money Network's customer service line, but they said they don't have any record of a card being issued to me for my current claim. The rep basically said I need to contact EDD directly, but we all know how THAT goes with the constant busy signals. Does EDD automatically issue a new card for new claims? Or was I supposed to request one somewhere? Did anyone else have this problem when filing a new claim after being off unemployment for a while? I really need this money for rent next week!

Yes, EDD should automatically send you a new Money Network card since it's been over a year since your last claim. They typically issue new cards within 7-10 business days after your first payment is processed. Since your payments already show as 'paid,' the card should be on its way, but there are sometimes delays with the card issuer. For your immediate situation, I recommend: 1. Check if your old card from 2022 is still valid (they're usually good for 3 years) - sometimes they'll deposit to an existing card 2. Log into UI Online and verify your mailing address is correct 3. Contact EDD directly to confirm they've initiated the card issuance Unfortunately, Money Network customer service can't help much until EDD has actually requested the card for you.

Thanks for the info! My old card expired last year so that's definitely not an option. My address in the system is correct, so I guess I need to talk to EDD directly. Any tips on actually getting through to them? I've been calling for three days straight with no luck.

3 weeks?! I can't wait that long - I have bills due! Did you do anything special to speed it up or just wait it out?

I went through something similar in January. THE ENTIRE EDD SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU GIVE UP!!!! They showed my payments as "paid" for over a month but no card ever came. When I finally got through to someone, they said there was a "flag" on my account that needed to be cleared before the card could be issued. OF COURSE they never bothered to tell me about this flag! Call EDD at exactly 8:01 AM when they open and keep hitting 0 until you get a human. Don't bother with their automated garbage. And don't trust the UI Online status - it means NOTHING. EDD LIES!!!

this is so true!! the website says one thing but reality is completely different. i had to call like 37 times before getting through last month

Have you checked if you can switch to direct deposit? I think EDD finally rolled that out for everyone in 2024. Much better than dealing with those stupid cards. Should be an option somewhere in your UI Online account settings.

I looked for that option but couldn't find it anywhere in my account. Maybe it's not available for everyone yet? Or maybe I just need to have a card first before I can switch? The whole system is so confusing.

one time my neighbor had this happen and it turned out someone stole his card from the mail. you might wanna check if it was delivered but taken. those things don't come in marked envelopes, just plain white ones so thieves target them

THIS!!! Those plain white envelopes are a JOKE. Mine got stolen twice before I started camping out by my mailbox the day it was supposed to arrive. EDD KNOWS this is happening but they don't care!!! Why can't they use secure delivery or require signature??? Because they WANT us to struggle!

I work in HR and deal with these issues frequently. Here's what's happening: since your previous claim was in 2022, you're considered a "returning claimant" rather than a continuing one. EDD does automatically issue a new card, but there's often a verification hold that happens behind the scenes that can delay the card issuance. The most efficient way to resolve this is to speak directly with an EDD representative. I've had several employees use a service called Claimyr to get through to EDD quickly (https://claimyr.com). They have a system that navigates EDD's phone tree and calls you back when they get an agent on the line. There's a video demo here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Once you get through to EDD, specifically ask them to check if your Money Network card has been issued or if there's a hold preventing it. They can initiate an expedited card if needed.

Thank you for explaining this so clearly! That makes sense about being a "returning claimant" - I bet there IS some verification hold happening. I'm going to check out that Claimyr service right now because I'm desperate to get this resolved. Appreciate the tip!

I had a similar situation last year. What nobody tells you is that there's an internal status difference between "paid" (which just means EDD has approved the payment) and "issued" (which means they've actually sent the money to Money Network). You need to specifically ask an EDD rep if your payment has been ISSUED, not just paid. In my case, I had to have them manually trigger the card issuance after clearing a random identity verification flag that wasn't visible in my UI Online account. Once I got someone on the phone, they fixed it in about 5 minutes and my card arrived 7 days later. Definitely check your UI Online inbox too - sometimes they send notices about verification needs that don't show up as alerts.

I just checked my inbox and there's nothing there about verification needs or holds. That's really helpful to know about the difference between "paid" and "issued" though - I'll specifically ask about that when I get through. Thank you!

my cousin works at edd and she says theyre super backed up right now cuz of layoffs in the tech industry. lots of people filing new claims so everything is slower than normal

They're ALWAYS "backed up" with SOMETHING. First it was the pandemic, then it was fraud prevention, now it's tech layoffs. Just excuses to avoid doing their JOBS!!!

Update on your options: After you manage to speak with an EDD representative, they can: 1. Confirm if your card has been issued and provide a tracking number 2. Expedite a replacement card (5-7 business days instead of 10-14) 3. In extreme hardship cases, they can sometimes arrange an emergency payment at a physical office Regarding the direct deposit option another user mentioned - this is still being rolled out gradually to all claimants, so you may not have access yet. It typically becomes available after your first payment cycle is complete. I'd focus on getting through to EDD first thing tomorrow morning. The first hour they're open is usually the best time to call.

Thank you! I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service someone mentioned because I've wasted so many hours already trying to call. I'll ask about expediting the card since my rent is due next week. Really appreciate all the help from everyone!
