Money Network closed my card account after email override - EDD says call them, they say call EDD - stuck in a loop!
Really frustrated right now! I've had the same Money Network debit card for months with no issues, but last week I tried withdrawing cash at an ATM and it kept saying my card wasn't active. I KNOW there's money on it (around $2,400) and the card definitely worked fine before.\n\nI've spent HOURS on the phone with Money Network customer service - talked to 5 different reps and only 2 were remotely helpful. Finally got someone who explained there was an "account override" in their system and somehow my email was changed which locked me out of my online account!\n\nThe rep said they had to close my card account for security reasons and that they'll mail me a check for my remaining balance. She then told me I need to contact EDD directly to request a new payment card or switch to another payment method.\n\nHere's where I'm going crazy - when I call EDD, the automated system directs me to contact Money Network for "all card-related issues." The EDD website says the same thing! I'm stuck in this ridiculous loop between EDD and Money Network with thousands of dollars in limbo.\n\nHas anyone dealt with this? Will Money Network really send me a check? And how do I get EDD to issue a new card when they keep telling me to call Money Network?

Oh no...that's exactly what I'm afraid of. Did you eventually get a check or did you have to do something else? I can't wait 3 weeks - rent is due next week!

This sounds like a potential fraud situation where someone might have tried accessing your account. When Money Network detects suspicious activity, they sometimes lock everything down and implement these \

I work in financial services (not for EDD) and can tell you that Money Network WILL send you a check, but their standard processing time is 10-15 business days. The rep should have told you this timeframe. What you're experiencing is unfortunately common with prepaid cards when account security gets flagged.\n\nFor getting a new card, you need to call EDD's specialized payment services unit at 1-866-401-2849, not the regular UI number. They handle all payment method changes. When prompted by the automated system, select \

This is exactly right. I had a similar issue where my Money Network card was suddenly deactivated. I got through to EDD's payment services and they were able to issue me a new card within 5 business days. While waiting for the check from Money Network, I requested that EDD hold any new payments until my new card arrived so everything would be on one card.\n\nI'd actually recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD agent faster. They helped me skip the phone queue and I got through in about 15 minutes instead of spending days trying. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Totally worth it when you're dealing with something urgent like accessing your benefits.

Thank you both for the detailed info! I'll try calling that specific number tomorrow morning. The direct deposit option sounds much better at this point - I'm done with the Money Network card drama. I checked out that Claimyr video and might try it if I can't get through tomorrow. Just need this resolved before rent is due!

While I understand your frustration, Money Network isn't actually a scam - they're the official EDD payment processor. They do have terrible customer service though. Filing a CFPB complaint was exactly the right move though, they have to respond to those within 15 days by law. Anyone reading this who doesn't get their promised check should absolutely file at consumerfinance.gov/complaint

I switched to direct deposit after my third Money Network card issue and never looked back. When you call that payment services number mentioned above, don't let them send you another card. Direct deposit is WAY more reliable and payments hit your account 1-2 days faster.\n\nAs for the check from Money Network - I did eventually get mine, but it took almost 3 weeks. If rent is due sooner, you might want to see if your landlord will work with you given the circumstances. Some landlords are understanding about benefit payment delays if you communicate proactively.\n\nOh, and document EVERYTHING. Write down the names of everyone you speak with at Money Network and EDD, along with dates, times, and what they promised. This is crucial if you end up needing to file a formal complaint.

I'm definitely going to switch to direct deposit! And good call on documenting everything - I've started keeping notes of all my calls but didn't think to get names. Will do that going forward. My landlord is usually pretty flexible so I'll talk to them tomorrow just in case.

This is unfortunately a common issue with the Money Network cards. The internal communication between EDD and Money Network is pretty terrible, which is why you're getting bounced back and forth.\n\nHere's what you need to know:\n\n1. Money Network WILL send you a check for your balance, but their timeline of 7-10 business days is rarely accurate. It's typically 15-20 business days.\n\n2. For a new payment method, you must speak to EDD's specialized payment unit (1-866-401-2849). Regular EDD representatives cannot help with this.\n\n3. When you call, specifically state: \

This is excellent advice. I'd just add that when calling that payment unit number, try early morning (7:30-8:30am) or late afternoon (4:00-4:30pm) for shorter wait times. The midday hours are absolute nightmares for getting through.

I went through this exact same nightmare about 6 months ago! Money Network locked my card after what they called a "security event" and I was stuck in that same EDD-to-Money Network loop for weeks. Here's what finally worked for me: The check from Money Network DID eventually come, but it took 19 business days (not the 7-10 they promised). While waiting, I called EDD's payment services line at 1-866-401-2849 every single day until I got through. When I finally did, I immediately requested to switch to direct deposit and asked them to put a note on my account that I was waiting for a replacement payment method due to Money Network card closure. Pro tip: When you call that EDD payment line, have your banking info ready (routing number, account number, account type). They can set up direct deposit during that same call if you have everything ready. Also, ask them to email you a confirmation of the payment method change - this saved me when there was confusion about my next payment. The whole ordeal took about a month to fully resolve, but direct deposit has been flawless ever since. Hang in there - it will get sorted out, just takes way longer than it should!

•This is so helpful, thank you for sharing your timeline! 19 business days is crazy long but at least I know what to realistically expect. I'm definitely going to call that payment services number first thing tomorrow morning and get my banking info ready. Did you have any issues with EDD holding your payments while waiting for the direct deposit setup, or did they continue processing normally once you made the switch request?

Wow, this is exactly what I'm going through right now! My Money Network card got deactivated yesterday and I have about $1,800 stuck on it. The customer service rep told me the same thing about an "email override" and that they'd mail a check, but when I asked how long it would take, she just said "7-10 business days" which based on everyone's comments here seems wildly optimistic. I'm going to try calling that EDD payment services number (1-866-401-2849) tomorrow morning early like Ruby suggested. Has anyone had luck getting through to them on the first try, or should I expect to call multiple times? Also, for those who switched to direct deposit - do they require any special documentation from your bank, or just the routing and account numbers? This whole situation is so stressful when you're depending on these payments for basic expenses. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences - at least now I know I'm not the only one dealing with this mess!

•I just went through this exact situation last month! For the EDD payment services line, I had to call about 4-5 times over two days before getting through, but calling right at 7:30am seemed to work best. Don't get discouraged if you get busy signals - just keep trying. For direct deposit setup, they only need your bank routing number, account number, and account type (checking or savings). No special documentation required from your bank. The EDD rep will read everything back to you to confirm, and like Maya mentioned, definitely ask for email confirmation of the change. One thing I wish someone had told me - once you request the direct deposit switch, your next payment might be delayed by a few days while they process the change. The rep should warn you about this, but mine didn't. Just wanted to give you a heads up so you can plan accordingly! The whole process is frustrating but you'll get through it. Direct deposit is SO much better than dealing with Money Network cards. Good luck tomorrow morning!

This exact same thing happened to my sister about 2 months ago! She was panicking because she had over $3,000 stuck on her Money Network card when they suddenly deactivated it. The "email override" excuse seems to be their go-to explanation lately. A few things that might help based on her experience: 1. The check from Money Network DID come, but it took exactly 3 weeks and 2 days (way longer than they promised). She had to call them twice during that period to "check on the status" which seemed to keep her case active. 2. When she called EDD's payment services at 1-866-401-2849, she got through on her second attempt by calling at exactly 7:45am. The rep was actually really helpful and switched her to direct deposit immediately. 3. Most importantly - she asked EDD to put a temporary hold on any new payments until her direct deposit was fully set up. This prevented any payments from going to the closed Money Network card while everything was being sorted out. The whole ordeal was super stressful but she's been on direct deposit for 2 months now with zero issues. Definitely document everything and don't let Money Network brush you off with vague timelines. You've got this!

•This is really reassuring to hear about your sister's experience! The 3+ week timeline for the check is concerning but at least it actually came. I love the idea of asking EDD to hold new payments until direct deposit is set up - that's such a smart move to prevent payments from going into the void while everything gets sorted out. I'm definitely calling that payment services number first thing tomorrow morning around 7:30-7:45am based on everyone's advice. Having $2,400 stuck in limbo is giving me so much anxiety, especially with rent coming up. It's oddly comforting to know this isn't just happening to me and that there actually is a path forward, even if it takes longer than it should. Did your sister have to provide any proof of the Money Network card closure to EDD, or did they just take her word for it when she requested the payment hold and direct deposit switch?

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! My Money Network card was suddenly deactivated three days ago and I have about $1,600 stuck on it. The customer service rep gave me the same "email override" explanation and promised a check in 7-10 business days, but reading everyone's experiences here, it sounds like I should expect 3+ weeks realistically. This is so frustrating - I had no idea this was such a common problem with Money Network cards! Based on all the helpful advice in this thread, I'm planning to call EDD's payment services line (1-866-401-2849) tomorrow morning around 7:30am to switch to direct deposit and request a payment hold until it's set up. Quick question for those who've been through this - when Money Network sends the check, do they mail it to the address on file with EDD, or do I need to update my address with Money Network directly? I recently moved and want to make sure it goes to the right place. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it's such a relief to know there's actually a way out of this nightmare loop between EDD and Money Network!

•Great question about the address! Money Network will mail the check to whatever address they have on file in their system, which might be different from your EDD address if you moved recently. I'd definitely call Money Network customer service to update your mailing address with them directly - don't assume it automatically syncs with EDD's records. When you call EDD's payment services tomorrow morning, you can also verify/update your address with them at the same time to make sure everything matches up for future payments. It's worth the extra few minutes on the phone to avoid having your check sent to your old address and getting delayed even further. Also, since you just moved, make sure your bank account is still in good standing and that your new address is updated with your bank too before setting up direct deposit. Sometimes banks flag address mismatches as potential fraud. Good luck with the early morning call - you've got this!
