Just filed EDD claim - what next? Need advice ASAP
Hey everyone, I just filed an EDD claim and I'm not sure what to do next. Has anyone gone through this process recently? Any tips or advice would be really appreciated. I'm kinda lost and worried about messing something up.

Welcome to the club, buddy. š I filed my claim about a month ago, and let me tell you, it's been a wild ride. First thing's first: make sure you certify for benefits every two weeks. Set a reminder on your phone or you'll regret it!

Thanks for the tip! How do I certify? Is it just on the EDD website?

Yep, you can do it online through UI Online. It's pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. Just log in and look for the 'Certify for Benefits' button. Easy peasy! š

Don't forget you can also certify by phone or mail if the website gives you trouble. I've had to use the phone option a couple times when the site was down.

Have you guys tried calling? I know its a pain, but I finally got through after like 50 attempts and they sorted out my issue.

Pro tip: document EVERYTHING. Save screenshots, write down who you talked to and when. Trust me, it'll save you a headache later if theres any issues with your claim.

Ugh, EDD is such a nightmare rn. I've been trying to get through to someone on the phone for weeks. Anyone know a trick to actually talk to a human being there?

Actually, I found a way! There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it worked for me. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

Listen up, newbie. Here's what you need to know about dealing with EDD: 1. Be patient. Like, REALLY patient. The system is overloaded and understaffed. 2. Double-check all your info before submitting. One typo can delay everything. 3. If you get a letter saying you're disqualified, don't panic! Appeal it ASAP. 4. Join a Facebook group for EDD claimants. Lots of good info there. 5. If you can't get through on the phone, try contacting your local assembly member's office. They can sometimes help push things along. 6. Keep certifying even if your claim is pending. You'll get backpay once it's approved. 7. Check your spam folder regularly. Sometimes important EDD emails end up there. Hang in there, and good luck!

Great advice! I'd add: don't forget to report any income you earn while on unemployment. Even if it's just a few bucks from a side gig.

Here's my comprehensive guide to navigating EDD claims based on my experience: ā¢ File your claim ASAP - don't wait! ā¢ Keep all your employment documents handy ā¢ Certify for benefits every two weeks without fail ā¢ Be honest in your responses - they cross-check everything ā¢ If you make a mistake, call EDD immediately to correct it ā¢ Check your inbox (including spam) regularly for EDD communications ā¢ If you need to upload documents, use their UI Online portal ā¢ Stay patient - the process can be slow, but persistence pays off Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Glad it helps! For documents, have your W-2s or 1099s from the past 18 months, pay stubs, and any separation paperwork if you were laid off. Better to have too much than not enough!

Anyone else feel like the whole system is designed to make us give up? š¤ It's like they're hoping we'll just go away if they make it hard enough.

Quick question: do we have to report unemployment benefits on our taxes? I'm worried about getting hit with a surprise bill next year. š¬

StarSeeker
Yep, unemployment is taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld now or pay them later. I'd recommend withholding if you can swing it.

PSA: If you're having trouble with your claim, try reaching out to your state representative or senator's office. They often have liaisons who can help cut through the red tape. It worked for me when I was stuck in pending hell for months!

Anyone know if they're still doing those extra federal benefits? I heard those ended but wasn't sure if they got extended or anything.

Just a heads up, EDD is cracking down on fraud big time. Make sure all your info is 100% accurate or you could end up with a mess on your hands. Speaking from experience here... š

Does anyone know if gig workers are still eligible for unemployment? I do Uber and DoorDash but work has been so slow lately.

Mateo Hernandez
I think you might be eligible for PUA (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance) if your income has been affected. Check the EDD website for details on that program.
