How long after winning EDD appeal until benefits actually start paying?

Just got the decision letter yesterday saying I won my appeal against EDD's disqualification! I'm so relieved but also still stressed because rent is due next week. Has anyone gone through this process recently? How long does it typically take for payments to actually start coming through after a successful appeal? My backpay is around $7,800 and I'm wondering if they'll send it all at once or in chunks. My UI Online account still shows 'disqualified' status - is that normal? Should I be calling them or just wait it out?

congrats on winning! mine took 17 days after the appeal decision letter, and I got all the backpay at once. but my friend had to wait over a month so i think it varies a lot. your account will probably still show disqualified for a while, the system is slow to update

17 days 😱 I was hoping it would be faster. Did you have to do anything to make it happen or did it just automatically update?

The timeframe varies but typically it takes 10-14 business days for EDD to process your appeal victory and release payments. EDD has to manually review your case, remove the disqualification flag, recalculate your eligible weeks, and then authorize payment. A few factors that can affect timing: 1. How backlogged their appeals department currently is 2. Whether there are any other issues on your claim besides the appealed issue 3. If your address or payment method has changed recently Your UI Online will continue showing disqualification until they complete the review. Once processed, you'll usually receive all backpay in a single payment, but very large amounts are sometimes split up for security reasons.

is this still true if you had the telephone hearing? my judge said i won but havnt got nothing in mail yet

0 coins

Yes, even with telephone hearings, you should receive a written decision in the mail first. After that, the same timeframes apply. If it's been more than 10 days since your hearing and you haven't received the decision letter, you should contact the Appeals Board to check on status.

I went through this in February and it was MADDENING. Won my appeal but then nothing happened for 3 weeks. Finally called EDD and found out they needed to manually remove a flag from my account. The moment they did that, payment processed within 48 hours. Don't just wait - keep checking your account daily and if nothing changes after 7-10 days, you need to call them. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual EDD rep after wasting days getting busy signals. They got me connected to a rep in under 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Totally worth it because the rep was able to fix whatever was holding up my payment right away.

Thank you for this! I'll give it a week and if nothing changes I'll definitely check out that service. Did you get all your backpay at once or did they split it up?

Got it all at once! Around $5600 deposited to my account. Just make sure when you talk to the rep that you specifically ask if there are any flags or holds still on your account that need to be removed.

same happened to me last year, total nightmare. they make you jump through all these hoops then still make you wait forever. so frustrating

One thing I learned after my appeal is that sometimes your weekly certifications might be missing for the periods you were disqualified. Check if you need to retroactively certify for any weeks! This delayed me getting paid because I didn't realize I still needed to go back and certify for those weeks even after winning my appeal. The EDD system doesn't make this clear AT ALL.

Oh wow, I hadn't thought of that. I'll double-check my certification history right now. Thanks for the tip!

my cousins friend said if u call the 833 number instead of the 800 number sometimes u get thru faster and they can help u better

0 coins

The 833 number (833-978-2511) is the general technical support line, while the 800 number (800-300-5616) is for claim specific issues. For payment release after an appeal, you'll want the claims specialists at the 800 number, as the technical support team usually can't make changes to payment status.

did anybody else have to deal with penalty weeks after winning appeal? i won but then found out i had 5 penalty weeks where i dont get paid even tho i qualified... such bs

Penalty weeks? I've never heard of that - what causes that to happen? Now I'm worried there might be more delays I don't know about.

0 coins

Penalty weeks only apply if your appeal involved a false statement disqualification (Section 1257(a)). If your appeal was about eligibility, job separation, or availability for work, penalty weeks wouldn't apply. The judge's decision letter will specifically mention penalty weeks if they apply to your case.

after you won did they make you do another phone interview? my friend had to do ANOTHER eligibility interview even after she won her appeal which delayed everything another 2 weeks

No, they didn't mention anything about another interview. I really hope they don't make me do that - the first interview was what caused all these problems to begin with when they misunderstood my work situation.

Just checking back - has your payment status changed yet? Curious because I'm about to have my own appeal hearing next week and trying to plan for how long the whole process might take.

Small update - my UI Online status changed from 'disqualified' to 'paid' yesterday! Exactly 12 days after getting the appeal decision. The money isn't in my account yet but hopefully tomorrow or the next day. I didn't have to call or do anything, it just updated on its own.

That's great news! 12 days seems pretty reasonable compared to some of the horror stories here. Good luck with your hearing next week - make sure you have all your documentation organized and ready to go. The actual hearing part isn't too bad, it's just the waiting afterward that's stressful.

Congratulations on winning your appeal! That's such a huge relief. Based on what I've seen in this community, it looks like you're right on track - 12 days to see the status change is actually pretty good timing. Once it switches to "paid" the actual deposit usually follows within 1-3 business days. For anyone else going through this process, it seems like the key takeaways are: expect 10-20 days for processing, check your certification history to make sure you don't have missing weeks, and don't hesitate to call if nothing changes after 2 weeks. The system is definitely slow but it does eventually work! Hope you get that deposit soon and can finally breathe easy about rent!

Thanks for summarizing all of this so well! As someone who's been lurking here for weeks trying to figure out what to expect, this whole thread has been incredibly helpful. It's reassuring to see that even though the process is slow and frustrating, people do eventually get their money. Dylan's timeline gives me hope that mine might not take forever once I get my decision letter.

Congrats Dylan! Really glad to see your status finally updated to "paid" - 12 days is actually not too bad compared to some of the nightmare stories I've heard. I'm dealing with a similar situation right now (waiting on my appeal decision) and this thread has been super helpful to understand what to expect. One thing I wanted to add that might help others - I've heard that if you have direct deposit set up, the money usually hits your account faster than if you're waiting for a debit card. Also, make sure your address is current in the system because apparently they mail you a notice when the payment is released, and if that gets returned it can cause delays. Fingers crossed your deposit shows up tomorrow! Keep us posted on the final timeline once you actually get the money.

That's a really good point about direct deposit vs debit card! I've had direct deposit set up the whole time so hopefully that helps speed things up. My address is current too, so fingers crossed everything goes smoothly. I'll definitely update once the money actually hits my account - this whole process has been such a rollercoaster but finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for all the encouragement everyone!

Hey Dylan, congrats on winning your appeal! That's such a huge relief after all the stress you've been through. Based on everyone's experiences here, it sounds like you're in a pretty normal timeframe - 12 days to see the status change is actually on the faster side compared to some of the stories I've read. I went through something similar last year (different issue but same waiting game after winning an appeal) and the anticipation is killer when you have bills due. The good news is that once your status shows "paid" like yours does now, the actual money usually deposits within 1-2 business days if you have direct deposit set up. One thing that helped my anxiety during the wait was setting up account alerts so I'd get notified immediately when the deposit hit, rather than obsessively checking my balance every hour. Also, if you haven't already, you might want to reach out to your landlord to give them a heads up that payment is coming - most are understanding about unemployment delays, especially if you can show them the appeal decision letter as proof that money is on the way. Really hoping you wake up to that deposit tomorrow! This community has been such a lifesaver for navigating all the EDD chaos.

This is such great advice, especially about setting up account alerts! I've been checking my bank app like every 30 minutes which is driving me crazy. And you're right about reaching out to my landlord - I actually did text him yesterday with a photo of the decision letter and he was totally understanding. Said he'd rather know what's going on than be left guessing. Really appreciate all the support from everyone here - this whole process would be so much scarier without people sharing their experiences!

This whole thread is incredibly helpful for anyone going through the appeal process! Dylan, congrats on getting to the "paid" status - that's a huge milestone. Based on what everyone's shared here, it seems like 10-20 days is the typical range, with some horror stories going longer. One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is that you should also check if your bank has any daily deposit limits that might affect receiving a large lump sum like $7,800. Some banks will hold or flag unusually large deposits for verification, which could add another day or two to the process. You might want to give your bank a heads up that you're expecting a large government deposit so they don't put an automatic hold on it. Also, for anyone else reading this who's waiting on their appeal decision - make sure you keep certifying for benefits even while your case is pending! I made that mistake and it delayed everything because I had to go back and retroactively certify for weeks I missed. Really hoping that deposit hits your account soon Dylan! Keep us posted on the final timeline.

That's a really smart point about bank deposit limits! I hadn't even thought about that. My credit union does have daily limits but I think they're pretty high for government deposits. I'll definitely give them a call this morning just to be safe - the last thing I need is another delay because of a bank hold. And yes, totally agree about continuing to certify - I was lucky that I kept doing my weekly certifications even while disqualified, but I can see how easy it would be to stop doing them thinking they don't matter. Thanks for all the helpful tips everyone!

Dylan, this is such an encouraging update! Really happy to see your status changed to "paid" after 12 days - that gives me hope for my own situation. I won my appeal about 8 days ago and have been obsessively checking my account every day. It's reassuring to know that the system does eventually update even if it takes a couple weeks. The advice everyone's given here about calling your bank is spot on. I had a friend who got their large unemployment backpay held for 3 days because the bank flagged it as suspicious. Definitely worth a quick call to avoid that headache. Thanks for keeping everyone updated throughout your process - it really helps those of us going through the same thing to have realistic expectations. Hoping that deposit hits your account today!
