How do I get my 1099-G from California EDD unemployment online?

I'm trying to figure out how to get my 1099-G from unemployment online and honestly I'm completely lost. I filed for UI benefits last year and now tax season is here and I never got anything in the mail from California EDD. My accountant is asking for the form and I don't even know where to start looking. I logged into my UI Online account but I can't find where they keep the tax documents. Is there a separate section or portal I need to go to? I remember getting a paper copy years ago but this is the first time I've had to find it digitally. Do I need to go through myEDD or is it somewhere else entirely? Any help appreciated because my tax deadline is coming up fast.

So the 1099-G from California EDD is actually found through the UI Online portal, not a separate site. Once you log into your account at ui.edd.ca.gov, look for the 'Tax Information' section in the left-hand menu. There should be a link that says '1099G Tax Form' and you can view and download it right from there as a PDF. If you filed for benefits in the prior calendar year you should see it available sometime in late January or early February. Make sure you're looking at the correct year since they keep multiple years in the system.

I found the Tax Information section but it's just showing me a blank page, nothing loads. Is there a specific browser I should be using?

0 coins

Try Chrome or Firefox, sometimes Safari or Edge can cause display issues with the California EDD site. Also make sure you're not using a VPN since that can block the document from loading.

0 coins

Same issue happened to me, switching browsers fixed it immediately. The PDF viewer built into the EDD portal doesn't work well with all browsers.

0 coins

just go to ui.edd.ca.gov and login, its under tax info on the left side. pretty easy once you find it

0 coins

I see the section now but when I click on 1099G it just spins and never loads, been trying for like 20 minutes

0 coins

SAME. this has been happening all week. the site is clearly overwhelmed during tax season and EDD doesnt bother to upgrade their servers. classic EDD incompetence. I've been trying to get mine for THREE DAYS and every time I call I get disconnected before talking to anyone. the system is broken on purpose I swear

0 coins

yeah the site gets really slow in january and february every year, try early morning like 7am before everyone else is trying to access it

0 coins

I had the same spinning/loading problem last week and was going crazy trying to get my 1099-G. Ended up spending hours trying to call California EDD but kept hitting busy signals or getting cut off. A friend told me about a service called Claimyr that helps you actually get through to a live EDD agent on the phone without sitting on hold forever. I used it to finally reach someone who confirmed my 1099-G was available and walked me through accessing it. You can check it out at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. Honestly saved me a ton of stress during tax season.

0 coins

Wait does this actually work? I've never been able to get through to a real person at EDD ever. How long did it take?

0 coins

Got connected to an actual agent within the same day. I was honestly shocked because I'd given up on ever reaching a human at EDD. Definitely worth trying if you're stuck.

0 coins

sounds too good to be true tbh but I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point lol

0 coins

I'm skeptical of these services but I'm also on day 4 of trying to get my 1099-G so maybe I'll check out that video

Quick tip that helped me: if the online portal keeps failing, you can also request your 1099-G by mail by calling the EDD and asking them to resend it. They're supposed to mail them out by January 31st each year. If you didn't receive one and the online system isn't cooperating, requesting a reissue by mail is a backup option. Takes about 7-10 business days to arrive though so if your tax deadline is soon that might not help.

0 coins

My accountant needs it within the week so mail probably won't work but good to know as a backup

0 coins

I requested mine by mail in 2024 and it took closer to 3 weeks, not 7-10 days. Just FYI so nobody cuts it too close with their taxes.

0 coins

Fair point, mailing times can definitely vary. Online is definitely faster if you can get the portal to cooperate.

Few things worth knowing about the California EDD 1099-G that might help clarify what you're looking for. The form reports the total unemployment insurance benefits you received during the calendar year and any federal income tax you elected to have withheld. It's used to report unemployment compensation on your federal and state tax returns. California EDD is required to issue these by January 31st. If you opted into paperless communications through your UI Online account settings, they will NOT mail you a paper copy — you'll only get it electronically. That's why a lot of people are confused when it doesn't show up in the mail. Check your notification preferences in your account settings if you're not sure which delivery method you selected.

0 coins

Oh wow I didn't know about the paperless setting. I think I might have checked that box when I first set up my account. That explains why I never got anything in the mail.

0 coins

This is really important info that EDD doesn't make obvious at all. I had the same situation and assumed there was a problem with my account when actually I had just opted into paperless and forgotten about it.

0 coins

wait so if you opt out of paperless you get BOTH a paper copy and online access? or just the paper one?

0 coins

If you're opted into paper delivery you'll get a mailed copy but you should still be able to access it online through UI Online as well. The portal keeps records regardless of your delivery preference.

0 coins

I work in tax prep and see this confusion constantly. One thing to watch out for: if you received both regular UI and any other California EDD benefits in the same year, they all get combined onto a single 1099-G. The form will show the gross amount paid before any withholding. Also double check that the Social Security number on the form matches yours exactly before giving it to your accountant — occasionally there are errors that need to be corrected through EDD directly.

0 coins

Good call on the SSN check, I'll make sure to verify that once I can actually access the form

0 coins

what happens if the amount on the 1099-G seems wrong? like I feel like mine from last year was off but I didn't know how to dispute it

0 coins

If the amount looks incorrect you need to contact California EDD directly to request a corrected 1099-G. Keep your own records of what you received — your payment history in UI Online shows every payment made to your claim which you can use to verify the total.

0 coins

ok so I'm reading this thread because I have the same question but also now I'm panicking because what if I forgot to claim my UI benefits on my taxes from last year?? do you have to report unemployment as income?? I thought it wasn't taxable?? someone please tell me I haven't messed up my taxes

0 coins

Unemployment insurance benefits ARE taxable at the federal level and must be reported on your federal tax return. At the state level California does not tax unemployment benefits so you won't owe California state income tax on your UI payments. But yes for your federal return you need to report it. If you missed it you may need to file an amended return.

0 coins

oh no. oh no oh no oh no. I definitely didn't include it. how bad is this. should I be panicking

0 coins

Don't panic, it's fixable. You'll need to file a 1040-X amended return for the year you missed it. It happens more often than you'd think and the IRS process for amendments is pretty straightforward. Talk to your accountant or a tax professional about it.

0 coins

ok thank you this is slightly less terrifying. going to call my accountant tomorrow morning

0 coins

I've spent FOUR DAYS trying to get through to EDD about my 1099-G and I want to scream. The website doesn't work. The phone lines hang up on you. The chat option just loops you back to FAQs. This is MY tax money information that I LEGALLY need for my taxes and California EDD just cannot be bothered to provide any working system to access it. I finally got mine by screenshot every single payment from my UI Online payment history and having my accountant calculate the total manually. It's absolutely ridiculous that I had to do that.

0 coins

Have you tried Claimyr? It's what finally got me through to an actual EDD agent after days of failed attempts. claimyr.com has the info and there's a walkthrough video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. Way less frustrating than the regular phone lines.

0 coins

I'm past the point of caring because I already got my accountant to work around it but I'll keep that in mind for next time EDD inevitably makes my life difficult

0 coins

the payment history workaround is actually really smart, wish I'd thought of that instead of stressing about the portal

0 coins

One thing that helped me find my 1099-G faster — if you go directly to https://myedd.edd.ca.gov and log in there (not the regular UI Online), there's a documents section that can sometimes load faster than the tax information section on the main UI portal. I think it depends on which servers are less congested. Worth trying if you're having loading issues.

0 coins

Trying this right now actually

0 coins

UPDATE: it worked!! I found my 1099-G through myEDD and it loaded immediately. Thank you so much!

0 coins

Nice! Yeah the myEDD portal sometimes works better when the main site is overloaded during tax season

0 coins

can someone explain what to actually do with the 1099-G once you have it? like where does it go on your taxes? I've never filed with unemployment income before and I'm totally new to this

0 coins

On your federal return (Form 1040) you'll report the amount from box 1 of the 1099-G on Schedule 1, Line 7 (unemployment compensation). It gets added to your total income. If you had federal tax withheld it'll show in box 4 and gets credited on your return. California state return doesn't tax UI so you generally don't need to add it there.

0 coins

ok that actually makes sense thank you. I was worried it was going to be super complicated

0 coins

also worth noting if you used tax software like TurboTax or H&R Block they have a specific section where you just enter the 1099-G info and it handles all the form placement automatically

0 coins

also heads up that EDD sends 1099-Gs for more than just regular unemployment. if you received disability insurance or paid family leave through EDD in the same year those also get reported. though I think they show up separately or combined, not 100% sure how they handle it

0 coins

To clarify: California State Disability Insurance (SDI) benefits are NOT reported on a 1099-G and are not taxable federally either. Paid Family Leave through EDD however IS taxable federally and gets reported. Just want to make sure nobody confuses their SDI with UI income.

0 coins

Oh good to know I wasn't totally sure on that, thanks for the correction

0 coins

wait so PFL is taxable but SDI isn't? that seems arbitrary

0 coins

I just want to add that if your 1099-G shows an amount that seems way higher than what you actually received, it could be because of identity theft on your EDD account. There was a lot of fraudulent claim activity and EDD had to issue 1099-Gs to people who had benefits paid out under their SSN without their knowledge. If you see a 1099-G for unemployment you never received you need to report it to EDD immediately as fraud.

0 coins

Oh that's scary. I was surprised my amount was higher than I expected but I think it's just because I forgot about some weeks I claimed. Worth double checking against my payment history though.

0 coins

Definitely cross-reference with your payment history in UI Online. It's a really important step to verify before you file.

0 coins

this happened to someone in my family. EDD sent a 1099-G for like $18,000 in UI benefits they never received. It was a nightmare to get resolved and took months of back and forth with EDD.

0 coins

Yes, EDD has a specific fraud reporting process for this. You can report it online through their contact form or by calling. The IRS also has a process for handling fraudulent 1099-Gs if you can't get EDD to resolve it before your tax deadline — you can file your taxes showing $0 for that fraudulent amount and attach a statement explaining the situation.

late to this thread but just want to say I spent 2 weeks trying to figure out how to get my 1099 g from unemployment online and this thread answered every single question I had. bookmarking this for next year lol

0 coins

Glad the thread helped! I finally got mine through myEDD portal and it was way smoother than the main UI site.

0 coins

The myEDD portal is consistently better during tax season in my experience, glad you found it useful

0 coins

tried the claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and honestly wasn't expecting much but I actually got through to an EDD rep who helped me verify my 1099-G was in the system and told me exactly where to find it. site is claimyr.com if anyone else is completely stuck on getting any help from EDD by phone

0 coins

ok adding this to my list of things to try because I still haven't sorted my tax situation

0 coins

good to know it actually works, I was on the fence after seeing it mentioned

0 coins

yeah I was skeptical too but when you literally cannot reach EDD any other way it's worth it

0 coins

genuine question — is there any way to get the 1099-G if you no longer have access to your UI Online account? Like if you forgot your login credentials or your account got deactivated?

0 coins

You can recover your myEDD account through the account recovery process on the login page. You'll need your SSN and some identity verification info. If you genuinely can't recover the account you'd need to call EDD to have them verify your identity and potentially mail you the form.

0 coins

My email address I used for the account doesn't exist anymore which is making recovery really complicated

0 coins

That's a tricky situation. You'll probably need to call EDD directly and explain the account recovery issue. They can look up your claim by SSN and help you get access restored or arrange another delivery method for the 1099-G.

0 coins

If you're having trouble getting through to EDD by phone to sort out the account issue, claimyr.com helped me reach an actual agent when the regular lines were impossible. Might be worth using given how specific your situation is.

0 coins

random tip: screenshot or download your 1099-G as soon as you can access it. The EDD portal has been known to have outages and I've heard of people losing access temporarily right before their tax deadlines. Having a local copy saves so much stress.

0 coins

Already downloaded mine as a PDF and emailed it to myself and my accountant. Not taking any chances!

0 coins

this is genuinely good advice, I lost access to mine during an EDD system maintenance window last year at the worst possible time

0 coins

Also keep records of your weekly payment confirmations throughout the year so you have your own running total. Makes verifying the 1099-G amount much easier.

0 coins

does anyone know if you get a 1099-G even if you only received unemployment for like 2 weeks? I went back to work pretty quickly and the total was pretty small so I wasn't sure if they still send one

0 coins

Yes, California EDD will issue a 1099-G regardless of how small the amount was. Even if you only received a few hundred dollars in UI benefits it gets reported. All unemployment compensation is taxable income federally so the full amount needs to be on your return no matter how small.

0 coins

ok good to know, I'll make sure to look it up then. wasn't planning to bother since it was so small

0 coins

Yeah don't skip it even for small amounts. The IRS also receives a copy of your 1099-G from EDD so they'll notice a discrepancy if it's not on your return.

0 coins

the California EDD website is just genuinely terrible. I'm sorry but it is. I've been dealing with UI claims on and off for years and every tax season it's the same thing — portal timing out, documents not loading, phone lines jammed. they've had years to fix this and just haven't. at least this thread has actual useful information unlike anything EDD publishes themselves

0 coins

Preach. They have one job during tax season and that's making sure people can access their 1099-G and somehow they still can't get it right.

0 coins

The myEDD portal is marginally better but yeah overall the tech infrastructure is pretty rough for how many people depend on it

0 coins

marginally' better is doing a lot of heavy liftinglol

0 coins

UPDATE FOR EVERYONE: I finally got my 1099-G! What ended up working was logging into myEDD directly instead of the regular UI Online portal. The document loaded immediately with no spinning or errors. For anyone else stuck — try myEDD at myedd.edd.ca.gov instead of the main site. I also downloaded it as a PDF right away based on advice in this thread. Thanks everyone for the help, this community is genuinely more useful than EDD's own website.

0 coins

Really glad you got it sorted! And yes the myEDD portal being more reliable for document access is definitely a pattern. Good tip to close out the thread.

0 coins

Nice update! For anyone who still can't get through and needs to talk to an actual EDD agent, claimyr.com remains the best option I've found for getting past the phone line nightmare.

0 coins

this whole thread was so helpful, glad it worked out for OP
