How to get my W2 from California EDD unemployment online

Okay so I've been going back and forth on this for like two weeks now and I'm honestly losing my mind a little. I collected unemployment benefits for most of last year after getting laid off from my logistics coordinator job, and now tax season is here and I cannot figure out how to get my W2 from unemployment online through California EDD. I logged into my UI Online account and I see my payment history but I cannot find where the actual tax form is. Someone told me it's actually called a 1099-G not a W2 but I'm not even sure if that's right or what the difference is. I just need the form that shows how much I got paid in unemployment benefits so I can file my taxes. Can anyone walk me through where to find this on the California EDD website? Is it in UI Online or is it somewhere else entirely? I've already checked my physical mail and nothing came so I'm really hoping I can just download it digitally.

yes its called a 1099-G not a W2, employers send W2s, EDD sends a 1099-G for unemployment. you can find it in UI Online under the tax documents section

Oh okay so I've been searching for the wrong thing this whole time lol. Where exactly is the tax documents section? I'm not seeing it on my dashboard.

0 coins

when you log in look for a link that says 'tax information' on the left side menu, should be under your claim details

To clarify what the previous commenter said - California EDD issues a 1099-G form (not a W2) for unemployment benefits. The 1099-G shows the total benefits you received and any federal taxes that were withheld during the year. Here's exactly how to access it online: Log into your UI Online account at https://myedd.edd.ca.gov, then look for the 'Tax Information' section in your account menu. California EDD typically makes these available by January 31st each year. Once you find it, you can view and download a PDF copy directly. If you had withholding taken out, it'll show in Box 4 of the form. Make sure you're reporting the full amount in Box 1 on your federal taxes.

This is super helpful thank you! I found the Tax Information link but when I click it it just loads and then gives me an error message. Is there a different browser I should be using?

0 coins

Try clearing your browser cache first or switch to Chrome if you're on Firefox or Edge. The EDD website has known compatibility issues with certain browsers. Also make sure you're not using any VPN which can sometimes interfere with the login session.

had the same error last week, chrome fixed it for me instantly

I was dealing with the exact same frustrating situation trying to sort out my tax documents with EDD and honestly the online portal kept glitching for me. What finally helped was actually getting on the phone with an EDD agent who walked me through it and confirmed my 1099-G had been issued. If you're having trouble getting through on the phones (which, good luck lol), I ended up using a service called Claimyr that got me connected to a live EDD agent without sitting on hold for hours. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they also have a demo video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. Honestly kind of a lifesaver during tax season when everyone is calling EDD at once.

0 coins

Oh interesting, I didn't even think about calling EDD for this but maybe that's the move if the website keeps erroring out on me. Will check out that Claimyr thing.

0 coins

does claimyr actually work? i've heard mixed things

0 coins

worked for me twice now, got connected within like 20 min both times instead of waiting all day

0 coins

Quick heads up - if you never set up withholding during your claim, Box 4 on your 1099-G will just be blank or zero. That's normal. But you still owe federal income tax on whatever you received, EDD just didn't take it out automatically unless you specifically requested it when you filed. A lot of people get surprised by this. If you got like $15,000+ in benefits and had zero withheld you might owe a decent chunk come April.

0 coins

wait WHAT. nobody told me I could have had taxes withheld. I'm going to owe so much now

0 coins

Yeah it's an option you can set up through UI Online, 10% federal withholding. Wish EDD made that more obvious when you first file honestly. For next time if you ever need to file again you can change your withholding preferences in your account settings.

0 coins

This is actually really important info, I did opt for withholding so I think I'm okay but wow that could catch a lot of people off guard

0 coins

the 1099-g should also come in the mail by end of january but if it hasnt arrived you can just print it from ui online which is way easier anyway. also double check your address on file with edd is current because mine was wrong from when i moved and thats why i never got physical mail from them for like 6 months

0 coins

ugh I wonder if my address is outdated too. how do I update it?

0 coins

go into your profile settings in ui online there's a section for personal information where you can change your mailing address

I'm so frustrated reading this thread because I cannot get into UI Online AT ALL. My account got locked after I tried to reset my password and now I can't access ANY of my tax documents and its been 3 weeks of trying to get EDD to help me. I need this 1099-G for my taxes and EDD's automated phone line just keeps hanging up on me. I feel like I'm going completely insane. Anyone else deal with a locked UI Online account on top of needing to get their tax forms??

0 coins

For a locked account you actually need to contact the UI Online technical support specifically, not the main EDD claims line. The number is different and they handle account access issues. You can also try the account recovery option on the login page which sometimes bypasses the lockout without needing to call anyone.

0 coins

I've tried the account recovery like 4 times and it just sends me in circles. I'm at my wits end honestly

0 coins

This is exactly the situation where Claimyr helped me - when I needed to talk to an actual EDD agent and couldn't get through. claimyr.com got me connected to someone who could actually resolve my account issue. Way better than being stuck in the automated system loop.

0 coins

genuine question - does the 1099-G from EDD show up in TurboTax automatically if I import my tax documents? or do I have to enter it manually

0 coins

EDD doesn't have a direct integration with TurboTax for automatic import as far as I know. You'll need to manually enter the Box 1 amount (total benefits) and Box 4 amount (federal tax withheld) from your 1099-G. It takes like 2 minutes once you have the form in front of you.

0 coins

ok that's what I figured, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some easier way to do it

0 coins

I literally just found out I'm supposed to pay taxes on unemployment. I thought it was like... tax free money since I lost my job?? This is honestly devastating news for me right now I collected for almost 9 months and had zero withheld because nobody explained this to me when I signed up

0 coins

Unfortunately unemployment benefits have been federally taxable since the early 1980s. California does NOT tax unemployment at the state level, so you won't owe California state income tax on it, but you do owe federal. If you got a significant amount without withholding you may want to talk to a tax professional about whether you need to set up a payment plan with the IRS.

0 coins

wait so california doesnt tax it?? okay that's at least a little bit of relief. still worried about what I owe federal though

0 coins

same boat as you, found out about the federal taxes last year, it stings but it's manageable

0 coins

slight tangent but this thread is making me realize I never updated my direct deposit info after switching banks and now I'm worried about more than just my 1099-G lol. does anyone know if old payments went somewhere wrong or if edd holds them

0 coins

if the bank account is closed EDD should eventually get a return notice and they'll mail you a paper check to your address on file, but it can take a while. update your bank info in UI Online asap

0 coins

thanks, going to do that right now

0 coins

UPDATE: I finally found my 1099-G! For anyone else confused - after I cleared my Chrome cache and logged back into UI Online, I found it under 'Tax Information' in the left sidebar. It was there the whole time, I think I was just hitting a browser loading issue before. The form shows up as a PDF you can download or print directly. Total benefits in Box 1, my withholding in Box 4, everything I needed. Such a relief honestly.

0 coins

glad you got it sorted! yeah the browser thing trips a lot of people up with edd's site

0 coins

nice update, bookmarking this thread for next tax season lol

0 coins

happy for you... still locked out of my account though 😭

0 coins

For anyone finding this thread later - here's a complete rundown on the California EDD 1099-G process: (1) Log into UI Online at myedd.edd.ca.gov, (2) Navigate to 'Tax Information' in the left menu, (3) Select the relevant tax year, (4) Download your 1099-G PDF. If you can't access it online, you can also request a duplicate by calling EDD or by mailing a written request. EDD should mail original 1099-G forms by January 31st. Remember: California does NOT tax unemployment benefits at the state level, but you must report them on your federal return. The form is NOT a W2 - W2s come from employers only.

0 coins

this should be pinned honestly, very clear explanation

0 coins

thank you for this breakdown. I'm going to screenshot this for future reference

0 coins

Something I want to add that nobody mentioned yet - if you moved states after collecting California EDD benefits, you still need the California 1099-G for your federal taxes. I moved to Nevada last year and was confused about whether I needed California's form or something from Nevada. Answer is you need the California EDD 1099-G regardless of where you live now when filing federal taxes.

0 coins

oh that's actually a really good point I didn't even think about that scenario

0 coins

yeah I spent like a week confused about this so figured I'd mention it to save someone else the trouble

0 coins

Okay small update from me - I ended up trying Claimyr after seeing it mentioned in this thread and got through to an actual EDD agent within about 25 minutes. The agent was able to verify my identity over the phone and send me a temporary access link to get back into UI Online. I have my 1099-G now. If you're dealing with a locked account situation the phone is honestly the only real solution and Claimyr at claimyr.com made that actually possible. Highly recommend for anyone in a similar situation.

0 coins

that's awesome it worked out! good to know Claimyr is solid for account access issues too not just claim status stuff

0 coins

glad it worked for you! yeah getting a real agent on the line fixes so many things that the website just won't let you do yourself

0 coins

gonna save claimyr.com in case I have issues during next tax season

0 coins

random q but what if your 1099-G amount looks wrong? like what if it shows more than you actually received? does that happen

0 coins

Yes this can happen, particularly if there were any adjustments or if you had an overpayment situation where benefits were issued then later counted as an overpayment but still appear on the tax form. If you believe your 1099-G amount is incorrect you should contact EDD directly to request a corrected form. Make sure you have your payment history records to compare against.

0 coins

okay good to know. mine looks right I was just curious if that was a thing that happens

0 coins

It's definitely a thing. Also if you had any benefits from different claim types in the same year they should all be combined on one 1099-G but occasionally there are errors worth double checking against your payment history.

0 coins

does anyone know if edd sends a separate 1099-G if you also got disability or PFL through EDD in the same year or is it all on one form

0 coins

State Disability Insurance (SDI) and Paid Family Leave (PFL) through EDD are generally NOT taxable at the federal level for California residents and typically do NOT appear on a 1099-G. Regular unemployment benefits are the ones that get reported. So if you got both UI and SDI in the same year, only the UI portion should be on your 1099-G.

0 coins

oh wow I didn't know SDI wasn't taxable, that's actually good news for me

0 coins

yeah SDI/PFL being non-taxable is one of the few nice things about how California handles this stuff

0 coins

I work as a tax preparer and just want to confirm everything in this thread is accurate - 1099-G is correct form for unemployment, California does not tax UI benefits at state level, federal tax is owed on full amount received minus any withholding shown in Box 4. One thing I'll add: if you received a 1099-G but are disputing an overpayment with EDD, do NOT simply omit the income from your return. Report it and then work with EDD on the overpayment issue separately. Omitting it creates IRS problems that are much harder to fix than an EDD overpayment dispute.

0 coins

this is really valuable info thank you. I'm not disputing anything but good to know the right approach if that situation comes up

0 coins

Appreciate the professional perspective! This whole thread has honestly been way more helpful than I expected when I first posted.

0 coins

late to the thread but just want to say I had the same exact problem as OP last week and the Chrome fix worked for me too. Also worth noting if you're on mobile the UI Online site is a mess and you should really be doing this on desktop for anything tax related

0 coins

100% agree on desktop, I tried on mobile first and that was a disaster

0 coins

the edd mobile experience is genuinely terrible they really need to fix it

0 coins

My situation is a bit different - I never set up a UI Online account because I filed a paper claim last year. Can I still access my 1099-G online or do I have to wait for the mail or call EDD?

0 coins

You can actually create a UI Online account even if you filed a paper claim originally. Go to myedd.edd.ca.gov and select 'Register' - you'll need your Social Security number and claim information to verify your identity. Once set up, you should be able to access your 1099-G in the Tax Information section. If you run into issues getting the account created, calling EDD is the backup option.

0 coins

oh I didn't realize I could still create an online account after filing by paper. Going to try this, thank you!

0 coins

and if you have trouble getting the account set up or need EDD to pull your info, calling with Claimyr is a good backup - claimyr.com - agents can sometimes help verify your identity to get your online access sorted

0 coins

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THERE IS A DEADLINE TO ACCESS THE 1099-G ONLINE?? I'm worried EDD will remove it from the portal and then I won't be able to get it

0 coins

The 1099-G typically stays accessible in your UI Online account for several years, not just the current tax season. EDD keeps prior year tax documents available in the system. That said, it's always smart to download and save a copy locally once you access it rather than relying on the portal staying accessible indefinitely.

0 coins

okay thank goodness. I was panicking that there was some deadline I missed. downloading mine right now.
