How do I get my 1099-G from California EDD unemployment?

Okay so I've been dreading tax season and now it's here and I just realized I never got my 1099-G from EDD. I collected unemployment benefits for about 7 months last year after getting laid off from my warehouse job, and now my tax preparer is asking me for the form and I have no clue where to find it. I didn't get anything in the mail that I can remember. Is there a way to download it online through UI Online? Or do I have to call them? I really don't want to call because every time I try I get the busy signal or it just hangs up on me. Anyone dealt with this?

Yes you can get it online through UI Online on the myEDD portal. Log in to your account, go to the 'Payments' section and there should be a link to download your 1099-G. EDD usually makes them available by the end of January each year. If you collected benefits in the prior year it should definitely be there.

I logged in but I'm not seeing it in payments, is it maybe under a different menu? My UI Online looks kinda different than the screenshots I've been seeing online.

Try looking under 'Tax Information' or sometimes it's a banner at the top of your dashboard when you first log in during tax season. The layout changed a bit recently. If still can't find it try the document inbox on the left side menu.

Also worth noting that if your mailing address on file was old or wrong they may have mailed it somewhere else, so checking online is always the safer bet.

Same situation last year. The 1099-G is under the Tax Information tab in UI Online. Here's the direct path: log into myEDD, click on UI Online, then look for the 'Form 1099G' link in the left navigation panel. You can view it and download a PDF. If you had benefits from more than one year you can see prior years too.

Oh okay I think I found it! There's a thing that says 1099G Tax Form on the left side. Thank you!!

same, found mine this way. so much easier than waiting for mail

Just a heads up - if you can't find it online or your account is messed up somehow and you actually need to talk to EDD, I'd highly recommend using Claimyr. I spent like three days trying to get through to EDD by phone about a tax form issue and kept getting disconnected. Someone here mentioned Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - basically it holds your place in EDD's phone queue so you actually get a call back from a live agent instead of just getting a busy signal forever. Saved me a ton of frustration.

Hopefully I won't need to call but saving this just in case my online access doesn't work out. Thanks!

I've heard of Claimyr before, does it actually work? EDD phone lines are absolutely brutal

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me. Got a call back from an actual EDD rep within a couple hours. Way better than hitting redial 50 times.

0 coins

wait does everyone have to report unemployment on their taxes?? i didnt know that. i got benefits last year too and i just assumed it wasnt taxable

0 coins

Yes unfortunately unemployment benefits ARE taxable at the federal level. California does not tax them at the state level but you have to report the federal amount. That's exactly what the 1099-G is for - it shows how much you received so you can report it on your federal return.

0 coins

oh man. okay thanks for telling me. now i gotta find my 1099-G too lol

0 coins

This is a really common misunderstanding. The 1099-G will also show any federal taxes you had withheld if you opted into that. EDD lets you withhold 10% for federal taxes from each payment - if you did that it'll show in Box 4 on the form.

I had an issue where my 1099-G on UI Online showed a different amount than what I actually received. Turned out one of my weekly claims payment had been processed in January of the following year so it showed up on the NEXT year's 1099-G instead. Just something to double check if your numbers seem off.

0 coins

That's really good to know. How did you figure that out?

0 coins

I just went through my bank statements and added up every EDD deposit manually, then compared to the 1099-G. The difference matched up with a payment that came through in the first week of January. Tax preparer said it's a timing thing that happens sometimes with payments at year end.

0 coins

This is accurate, it's a cash basis accounting thing. The 1099-G reflects when payments were actually issued by EDD not necessarily when your benefit weeks were for.

UGHH I just spent 45 minutes trying to get into myEDD and it locked me out after too many login attempts. Now I cant even TRY to get my 1099-G. This system is honestly a joke. Why is it so hard to just view a tax form??

0 coins

If you're locked out of myEDD you'll need to go through the account recovery process. On the login page there's an 'Unlock Account' option. You'll verify your identity and reset access. Don't keep trying to log in or it'll stay locked longer.

0 coins

okay i found the unlock account thing, it's asking me to verify with my SSN and some claim info. fingers crossed this works

0 coins

ugh the myEDD site is SO bad. i had the same lockout happen twice. good luck

For anyone who truly cannot access UI Online - maybe you never set up an account or your email access is gone - you can also request a duplicate 1099-G form to be mailed to you by contacting EDD directly. They can verify your identity and either mail it or in some cases walk you through accessing it. You'll need your Social Security Number, your claim information, and current mailing address ready.

0 coins

Is there a specific number to call for this or just the main EDD line?

0 coins

The main EDD customer service line handles 1099-G requests. Just be prepared for wait times. If you keep getting disconnected or can't get through after multiple attempts, some people have had luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to navigate EDD's phone system - there's a demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 showing exactly how it connects you to a live agent.

0 coins

Okay good to know. I think I got my online access working finally so hopefully won't need to call but that's helpful info.

0 coins

random q - if i only collected like $800 total in unemployment last year do i still need to report it? seems like such a small amount

0 coins

Yes, you still need to report it. There's no minimum threshold for reporting unemployment benefits - any amount is taxable federally and needs to go on your return. EDD should still issue you a 1099-G for it.

0 coins

ugh okay fine. thanks i guess lol

0 coins

Worth noting - even if the tax impact is small, not reporting it can cause issues if the IRS gets the 1099-G from EDD and your return doesn't match. Just include it and you're fine.

0 coins

Another thing that tripped me up - if you had to pay back an overpayment to EDD, that affects your 1099-G. Box 2 on the form shows total benefits paid but if you repaid some of it in the same year there's a separate box for that. If your repayment was in a DIFFERENT year than when you received the benefits it gets more complicated and you might want to talk to a tax professional about it.

0 coins

I didn't have any overpayment so that shouldn't affect me, but good info for people who did.

0 coins

oh god i had an overpayment situation last year. i paid some of it back. where exactly is the repayment shown on the form?

0 coins

Box 4 shows federal tax withheld and I believe overpayment repayments made in the same year are reflected in Box 2 being adjusted downward. Honestly for complicated overpayment situations I'd double-check with a tax pro because the rules get nuanced.

0 coins

found mine no problem in UI Online but the PDF download kept failing for me. ended up just screenshotting each page of the form on screen lol. not ideal but it worked for my tax preparer

0 coins

If the PDF download keeps failing try a different browser. Chrome and Firefox tend to work better than Edge for the EDD site. Also make sure pop-up blockers aren't preventing the PDF from opening.

0 coins

oh interesting. i'll try that next time. the screenshot method works but it's annoying

0 coins

does the 1099-G show up even if your claim was denied and you never actually got paid? asking because i filed last year, got denied, and now i'm wondering if EDD is gonna send me a form for nothing

0 coins

No - if you never received any benefit payments you won't get a 1099-G. The form only gets issued if you actually received unemployment compensation. A denied claim with zero payments means no 1099-G.

0 coins

okay phew. that makes sense. thanks for clarifying

0 coins

Correct. The 1099-G reflects actual payments made to you. Zero payments = no form. You might still see a $0 form in some edge cases but typically EDD just doesn't generate one if nothing was paid out.

0 coins

I work as a bookkeeper and help a few people with their taxes every year. One thing I always tell them - double check that the address EDD has on file is your current address. Even though you can get the 1099-G online, EDD also mails a paper copy to your address of record. If someone else lives at your old address they could potentially receive your tax document. Worth logging into myEDD and verifying your contact info is up to date.

0 coins

Great point. I moved earlier this year so I should definitely update my address even though I'm not actively claiming anymore.

0 coins

Exactly. You can update your mailing address in the UI Online account settings. Takes about two minutes and it's worth doing.

0 coins

I finally got back into my myEDD account after the lockout and downloaded my 1099-G. The total seems higher than I expected... is there any way to dispute the amount on the form if you think it's wrong?

0 coins

Yes you can dispute it. First compare the 1099-G amount against your payment history in UI Online - you can see a record of every payment made. If the amounts genuinely don't match you can contact EDD to request a corrected 1099-G. They'd issue what's called a corrected form (sometimes noted as 'Corrected' on the form itself).

0 coins

How do I actually reach someone at EDD for this though? I feel like every time I call I get a busy signal or it hangs up

0 coins

Honestly for something like disputing a 1099-G amount you really do need to talk to an actual EDD agent. I mentioned Claimyr earlier in this thread - claimyr.com - that service is specifically great for situations where you need to actually reach a live person. The video demo (https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10) explains how it works. Getting through to EDD on your own can take forever for something like this.

0 coins

Okay I'll look into that. I really don't want to mess up my taxes over an incorrect amount on the form.

0 coins

wait i cant find my UI Online login info and i don't remember what email i used to set up the account. how do i even start?

0 coins

Go to myedd.edd.ca.gov and click 'Forgot Username' or 'Forgot Password' - you can recover access using your Social Security Number and some verification questions. If you used an email you no longer have access to that gets trickier and you might need to contact EDD directly to sort out account access.

0 coins

i tried forgot password but the recovery email is an old address i don't have anymore. great.

0 coins

In that case you'll need to contact EDD to regain account access - they can reset things with identity verification. Be patient with hold times. Some folks use Claimyr at claimyr.com to get through faster when the lines are jammed.

UPDATE for everyone - I finally successfully downloaded my 1099-G! It was exactly where people said, in the Tax Information section of UI Online. For anyone searching for this: log into myEDD, click UI Online, then look on the left navigation for '1099G Tax Form'. Click View and it'll open as a PDF. Mine loaded fine in Chrome. The amount matches what I calculated from my payments so everything looks good. Thanks everyone for the help, this thread saved me a lot of stress!

0 coins

Great news! Good luck with your taxes. For anyone else finding this thread - the myEDD portal is definitely the fastest way to get your 1099-G, no need to wait for mail or spend hours on hold with EDD.

0 coins

glad you got it sorted! this thread was helpful for me too honestly

0 coins

bookmarking this for next tax season lol

0 coins

One last thing worth adding for the thread - if you filed for unemployment but your benefits were in a different program or there was any complexity with your claim type, make sure you're looking at the right 1099-G. EDD issues separate 1099-Gs for different benefit programs in some cases. Your UI Online should show all of them but just double check if you think an amount looks off.

0 coins

Good addition. Also worth noting that EDD sends 1099-Gs for other programs too like Paid Family Leave and State Disability Insurance - those would show up separately and be reported differently on your taxes. The standard unemployment one is what most people in this thread are asking about.

0 coins

Oh interesting - I did use some SDI briefly before switching to UI. I should check if there's a separate 1099-G for that too.

0 coins

Yes check your UI Online inbox and the 1099-G section for both. SDI and UI are separate programs and EDD handles the reporting differently for each.
