EDD suddenly showing 'pending' status with 'problem needs to be reviewed' message - what happened?

I've been certifying for about 3 months now with zero issues - payments always hit my account within 48 hours. But this week when I certified, both weeks suddenly switched to 'pending' status. When I called the automated line, it said there's a 'problem that needs to be reviewed by EDD staff.' No explanation whatsoever. I haven't changed anything in my certifications, still looking for work the same way, and didn't have any income to report. My mortgage is due next week and I'm seriously freaking out. Has this happened to anyone else out of nowhere? Do I just wait or is there something I should be doing? The uncertainty is killing me!

This exact thing happened to me back in February. Turned out they were doing a random eligibility review. I had to wait for an interview but never got a call/letter about when it would happen. Your claim might be flagged for a quarterly review - they sometimes check to make sure you're still eligible. You should get a notice in the mail within 10 days explaining what the issue is.

Oh great... more waiting. Did you have to do anything special during this review? And how long did your payments stay pending? I'm getting really nervous about bills coming up.

I didn't change anything though - same address, same bank account. That's what's so frustrating, there's no apparent reason for this to suddenly happen.

This is standard procedure. EDD regularly flags claims for eligibility determinations, especially around your benefit year quarter mark. When this happens, your payments go to pending until they verify your continued eligibility. There are several reasons this might happen: 1. Quarterly wage review where they check if you've had unreported earnings 2. Random verification of your work search efforts 3. Questions about availability for work 4. Identity verification check You should receive a notice in your UI Online inbox or by mail explaining what specific issue they need to review. If you don't see anything in your inbox, you really need to speak with an EDD representative to find out exactly what's happening with your claim.

Thank you for explaining this. I've been checking my UI Online inbox obsessively but there's nothing new there. I guess I need to somehow get through to a rep. I've been calling but can't get through - just keep getting the 'too many callers' message and then it hangs up.

They ALWAYS do this!!! The EDD system is designed to randomly flag accounts and make people wait for $$ even when nothing changed. It's their way of making sure people aren't committing fraud but it punishes everyone. I bet you'll be stuck in pending for at least 3 weeks unless you can get someone on the phone.

This is exactly right. Had same issue in January. Was pending for almost a month before I finally got it resolved. The system is broken.

I had this happen to me last month and I discovered a trick to getting through to a representative! I was going crazy with bills piling up and no way to talk to anyone. After trying for days to get through, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get connected to an EDD rep. It basically holds your place in line and calls you when it's your turn. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km I was super skeptical at first but it actually worked - got through to someone who could see exactly what was flagged on my account (in my case it was a wage verification issue). The rep cleared it up and my pending payments switched to paid within 48 hours. Seriously worth it because otherwise you could be waiting weeks for them to get around to your claim.

Thank you! I'll check this out. I've been trying to call constantly for the past two days and can't get through. At this point I'll try anything because I need to know what's going on with my claim.

did u say anything different on ur last certifications??? sometimes even a tiny thing can trigger a flag like if u said no to looking for work or if u reported any income at all even just a few $$$

No, that's why I'm so confused. Answered everything exactly the same as I always do - yes to looking for work, no to refusing work, no to working or earning income, etc. Nothing changed from my previous certifications that all went through fine.

Just a heads up - after you find out what the issue is, make sure you keep certifying for benefits every two weeks even while the review is happening. A lot of people stop certifying while pending and that creates even more problems. Keep doing your work search and documenting everything too, as they might ask for proof during the review.

That's good advice, thank you. I'll definitely keep certifying on time. I've been keeping detailed records of my job search too, so hopefully that will help if they ask for it.

UPDATE: I tried that Claimyr service and actually got through to someone! The EDD rep told me my account was flagged for a random eligibility interview (just like someone mentioned above). Apparently they're checking if I'm still actively looking for work. She scheduled me for a phone interview next Tuesday and said my payments should switch to paid soon after if everything checks out. Just wanted to update in case anyone else runs into this same issue!

Great news! For the eligibility interview, have your work search records ready and be prepared to explain your job search efforts in detail. They'll want to know what specific employers you've contacted, positions you've applied for, and any follow-up you've done. As long as you've been conducting a legitimate work search, you should be fine. Good luck with the interview!

This is such a relief to hear that you got through and found out what was going on! I'm dealing with the exact same situation right now - my payments just switched to pending yesterday with no explanation. I've been panicking because I have rent due next week. Going to try that Claimyr service you mentioned since I can't get through the regular phone lines either. Thanks for sharing the update and letting us know it was just a random eligibility review - at least now I know it's probably not something I did wrong!

@ac1b2919e0aa You're definitely not alone in this! It's so stressful when payments suddenly go pending with no warning, especially when you have bills due. I just went through the same thing and it turned out to be completely random on EDD's part - nothing I did wrong at all. The Claimyr service really did help me get through to someone quickly instead of spending days trying to call. Make sure you have your work search documentation ready just in case they ask for it during the review. Hang in there, hopefully you'll get answers soon and your payments will get released!

This is so helpful to read through everyone's experiences! I'm a new member here and just started receiving unemployment benefits last month. Reading about these random eligibility reviews is both scary and reassuring - scary because it could happen to anyone at any time, but reassuring to know it's often just routine checks and not necessarily something you did wrong. I'm definitely going to keep detailed records of my job search activities and bookmark that Claimyr service just in case I ever need it. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences and advice - this community is really valuable for navigating all the confusing EDD processes!

Welcome to the community! You're absolutely right that keeping detailed records is crucial - I learned that the hard way when I went through a similar review a few months back. One tip I'd add is to not just document where you applied, but also save screenshots of job postings and any email confirmations you get from applications. EDD sometimes asks for really specific details during these reviews. Also, if you're using any job search websites like Indeed or LinkedIn, make sure to keep track of your activity there too since they can see that as part of your search efforts. It's frustrating that we have to be so prepared for these random checks, but better safe than sorry!

This thread has been so incredibly helpful! I'm also new to the community and currently dealing with my first pending status issue that started this week. Reading through everyone's experiences has really calmed my nerves - I was convinced I had somehow messed something up. It's good to know these random eligibility reviews are just part of the process, even though the timing couldn't be worse with bills due. I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service to get through to someone since I've been getting nowhere with the regular phone lines. Thanks to everyone for sharing their stories and especially to @2ff2c9d98ae1 for the updates - it gives me hope that this will get resolved soon!

@db2df52f7d9f Welcome to the community! I just joined recently too and this thread has been a lifesaver for understanding what's happening with these pending status issues. It's such a relief to know that so many people have gone through the same thing and come out okay on the other side. I was also panicking when I first saw "pending" on my account, thinking I had done something wrong. The fact that @2ff2c9d98ae1 got through with Claimyr and found out it was just a routine eligibility interview really gives me confidence that these issues are usually resolvable. I'm bookmarking all the advice here about keeping detailed work search records and continuing to certify even while pending - this community knowledge is invaluable for navigating EDD's confusing processes!

This is such valuable information for anyone going through this stress! I'm relatively new to unemployment benefits (started in January) and had no idea these random eligibility reviews were a thing. Reading through everyone's experiences here really shows how common this is, which is both frustrating and reassuring. What really stands out to me is how @2ff2c9d98ae1 kept us updated throughout the whole process - from the initial panic to getting through with Claimyr and finding out it was just a routine interview. That kind of transparency is so helpful for the rest of us who might face this same situation. I'm definitely taking notes on all the advice here about keeping detailed work search records and not stopping certifications during pending status. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences - this community is a goldmine of practical knowledge for navigating EDD's maze!

@520e1ca3c235 I'm also pretty new here and just wanted to echo how grateful I am for this thread! I literally found this community today because I'm dealing with the exact same pending status issue that started yesterday. Reading through @2ff2c9d98ae1's journey from panic to resolution has been so reassuring - it really shows that these random reviews are just part of how EDD operates, not necessarily something we did wrong. I've been keeping basic records of my job search but after reading all the advice here about screenshots and detailed documentation, I'm definitely going to step up my record-keeping game. It's frustrating that we have to be so prepared for these random flags, but at least now I know what to expect and have resources like Claimyr to help get through to someone when needed. This community is amazing for sharing real experiences and practical solutions!

I'm new to this community and currently going through my first unemployment experience. This whole thread has been incredibly eye-opening and honestly a huge relief! I had no idea that EDD does these random eligibility reviews - it's both frustrating that it can happen to anyone at any time, but also reassuring to see so many people go through it and come out fine on the other end. The way @2ff2c9d98ae1 documented their entire journey from panic to resolution really helped me understand what to expect if this happens to me. I'm definitely taking all the advice here to heart about keeping super detailed work search records, saving screenshots of job postings, and continuing to certify even if payments go pending. I'm also bookmarking that Claimyr service just in case - the regular EDD phone lines seem impossible to get through to. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences so openly - this kind of community knowledge is invaluable for navigating such a confusing system!

@c4c493369e86 Welcome to the community! I'm also fairly new here and this thread has been such a lifesaver. When I first saw my payments go to pending last week, I had no idea what was happening and honestly thought I was the only one dealing with this. Seeing @2ff2c9d98ae1's complete journey from the initial panic to getting it resolved really put things in perspective - these random reviews seem to be way more common than I realized. What really struck me is how many different people in this thread have gone through the exact same thing, which shows it's just part of how EDD operates rather than something specific we did wrong. I'm taking all the documentation advice seriously too - better to be over-prepared than caught off guard during one of these reviews. It's reassuring to know there are resources like Claimyr when the regular phone system fails us. This community really is amazing for sharing real-world experiences!
