EDD payment suddenly stuck on pending after 4 months of normal payments - anyone else?

I've been on UI benefits since January (about 4 months now) and everything has been going smoothly until yesterday. I certified on Sunday as usual, but my payment is still showing 'PENDING' today! Normally the money hits my account by Monday morning like clockwork. I still have over $6,500 in my claim balance, nothing has changed with my situation, and I answered all questions the same way I always do. My heart is racing because I have rent due next week and was counting on this payment. Has anyone else experienced their payment suddenly getting stuck on pending after months of no issues? Is EDD doing some kind of random review? Should I call them or just wait a bit longer? This is seriously stressing me out.

That's actually somewhat reassuring that I'm not the only one. Have you tried calling them yet?

This happens sometimes when EDD flags your account for a random eligibility review. A few things could be happening: 1. Quarterly review of your income (happens automatically every 3 months) 2. Random eligibility verification 3. System glitch due to maintenance (they often do updates on weekends) In my experience, waiting 2-3 days sometimes resolves it automatically. If it still says pending by Wednesday, definitely call them. Sometimes payments get stuck in their system and an agent can push it through on the phone.

Thank you! I didn't realize they do quarterly reviews. Since it's been almost exactly 4 months that would make sense. I'll wait until Wednesday like you suggested, but I'm definitely anxious about it.

Two WEEKS?! Omg I hope it doesn't take that long. Did you call them or did it just resolve itself?

THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME NOW!! EDD is probably understaffed AGAIN and the system is backing up. Last time my payment got stuck on pending it took 5 calls over 3 days to finally get someone who fixed it in 2 minutes. The system is BROKEN and they don't care about us at all!! Been through this nightmare 4 times this year already.

5 calls over 3 days sounds absolutely miserable. This system is so frustrating. I'm hoping it's just the quarterly review thing the other person mentioned and it'll clear up on its own.

I was in the exact same boat last month. Payments smooth for 5 months then suddenly pending with no explanation. Let me save you some time - don't bother waiting for it to resolve itself. Mine didn't update until I reached an actual EDD representative. I tried calling for 3 days straight using the regular number and couldn't get through. Finally I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Turns out my account got flagged for a quarterly review and the rep had to manually override something. She fixed it while I was on the phone and my payment switched from pending to paid within an hour.

Yes, it actually worked for me. Got through to an EDD rep when I'd been trying on my own for days. Definitely worth it when you're desperate to get your payment issue fixed.

Thank you for sharing this! I'll give it another day, but if it's still pending tomorrow I'll definitely try this Claimyr service. Glad to know there's actually a way to get through to EDD when needed.

This happens periodically to many claimants. The EDD system runs automated checks on claims, especially around the quarterly mark when they review wage information. A few things worth knowing: 1. If you've had any earnings reported during your claim period, the system may pause to recalculate your benefits. 2. After several months of claims, EDD sometimes requires additional verification of your continued eligibility and job search efforts. 3. System maintenance can occasionally delay processing by 24-48 hours. In my experience helping claimants, about 70% of these pending issues resolve automatically within 72 hours. For the remaining 30%, speaking with a representative is necessary. If you do need to call, try right when they open at 8:00 AM for the best chance of getting through. I wouldn't worry too much yet - give it until Wednesday. Your claim balance is healthy and there's no indication of a disqualification issue.

This is incredibly helpful information, thank you! Since I haven't had any earnings to report and nothing has changed with my claim, hopefully it falls into that 70% that resolves automatically. I'll wait until Wednesday morning and then try calling if needed.

Thanks for the advice! I definitely don't want to risk missing two payments. If it's not resolved by Wednesday morning I'll definitely be calling them.

UPDATE: My payment status just changed from pending to paid about an hour ago! It's not in my account yet but at least it's moving forward. Thanks everyone for your help and sharing your experiences - it really helped keep me from panicking too much!
