EDD payment stuck in pending after reporting separation pay - what's going on?
I'm freaking out right now. I just certified for my weekly benefits yesterday and my status is showing 'pending' instead of 'paid' like it normally does. I've been collecting unemployment for about 2 months with zero issues until now. The only thing different this time is that I reported a separation payment from my former employer (they finally paid out my unused PTO - $2,850). There's a message saying there 'might be an issue with my claim that needs additional review' but no explanation what the actual problem is. Has anyone had their payment get stuck after reporting severance or separation pay? How long does it take EDD to review this stuff? I have rent due next week and I'm seriously stressing.

same thing happend to me last month when i reported my vacation payout. took them like 10 days to finally change from pending to paid. the system flags any income automatically

10 DAYS?! Did you have to call them or did it just eventually process on its own?

Yes, reporting separation pay will definitely trigger a review. EDD needs to determine if the payment affects your weekly benefit amount or eligibility for that certification period. This is completely normal, but unfortunately, it can cause a delay in payment processing. Typically, they'll either adjust your WBA for that week or may determine the payment doesn't impact your benefits (depends on how you categorized it during certification). I wouldn't panic just yet - this is standard procedure when reporting additional income.

With separation pay of $2,850, your benefits for that week will likely be affected. California EDD uses a formula where they subtract 75% of your gross earnings from your weekly benefit amount. If that calculation results in $0 or less, you won't receive benefits for that week, but it won't affect future weeks. Since $2,850 × 0.75 = $2,137.50, which exceeds your WBA, you probably won't receive benefits for that particular certification period, but your claim will remain active for future weeks without that income.

When I had a similar issue last summer, my claim was stuck in pending for WEEKS!!! I called EDD over 60 times trying to get through to someone who could help. Every time I finally got through, they just told me to wait. The system is completely broken and they don't care about us at all! They're probably just trying to avoid paying you for as long as possible. Good luck getting any help from them. 😡

I was in the exact same situation last month - pending for days and couldn't get through on the phone. I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an EDD rep in about 45 minutes. It basically auto-dials and navigates the phone tree for you until it gets a live agent, then calls you to connect. Saved me days of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. The rep I spoke with was able to review my separation pay and release my payment on the spot.

Thanks for the tip! Did the rep give you any trouble about the separation pay or did they just process it?

The rep just verified the information I provided during certification, confirmed the type of payment and when I received it. Since my separation pay was already reported in the system, they just needed to review and approve it. The agent processed it while I was on the phone - status changed from pending to paid within an hour after the call ended.

uhhh...doesn't EDD have certifcation and verification or whatever its called? I think u might b confusing terms. aren't u talking about the bi-weekly questionaire thing? that's certification. verification is the ID stuff with id.me right?

You're right that there's sometimes confusion about the terms. To clarify:\n- Certification is the bi-weekly questionnaire where you report any work/income and confirm eligibility\n- Identity verification is done through ID.me\n\nThe OP is correctly using 'certification' to describe reporting their separation pay during the bi-weekly questionnaire process.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! This is my first time on unemployment so all of this is new to me. I'll try calling during those timeframes tomorrow. If I don't receive any benefits for the week I reported separation pay, will my claim just automatically continue for future weeks?

Yes, your claim will continue automatically! Even if you receive $0 for the week you reported separation pay, you should still certify for that period and all future periods. The system will show that week as $0 paid (or possibly \

FINAL UPDATE: Success! I used the Claimyr service that someone recommended here and got through to EDD this morning. The rep explained that my separation pay did exceed my weekly benefit amount for that certification period, so I won't receive benefits for that week, but my claim is still active. She processed the review while I was on the phone and my status changed from \

Great news! This is exactly how the process should work. You'll be back to normal for your next certification period. Thanks for updating us.
