EDD pending payment after reporting car vandalism - will it affect my claim?

I'm stressing out big time about my recent certification. I certified for the past two weeks on Sunday, and they already approved and paid one week, but the second week is still showing 'pending'. Here's what happened: during that second week, I had to turn down work for one day because my car got vandalized overnight and was in the shop getting fixed. I couldn't get to the jobsite (I'm in construction) since it's 30 miles away and no public transit options. I honestly reported this on my certification and explained that I was unable to accept work JUST for that one day. I was back to accepting assignments the very next day once my brother loaned me his car until mine was fixed. Now I'm wondering if reporting that one missed day is what's causing the pending status? Has anyone dealt with something similar? How long should I expect to be stuck in pending? Will they disqualify the whole week because of one day? I really need this payment to cover my rent next week.

This exact thing happened to me last month. One week paid, one week pending. In my case I reported being sick for 2 days. It triggered an eligibility interview because technically we have to be "able and available" for work every day. My pending week stayed that way for almost 3 weeks until I had a phone interview with EDD. They ended up approving my payment after I explained I was only unable to work those specific days. Make sure you answer your phone - they usually call from a blocked/unknown number.

3 WEEKS?!? I can't wait that long for this payment! Do they tell you when the interview will be or do they just randomly call? I'm so stressed about this.

when u say u cant accept work edd flags it. doesnt matter why. gotta be able n available EVERYDAY. even if its just 1 day ur still not available that day so system flags it automatic

But that seems so unfair! It's not like I was refusing work because I didn't feel like it. My car was literally vandalized - broken windows and slashed tires. I couldn't physically get to the job site. Should I have lied instead??

You should call EDD directly to resolve this faster. Your situation should qualify as 'good cause' for refusing work that one day since transportation issues caused by vandalism are beyond your control. The key is getting through to an actual claims specialist who can review and potentially release the pending payment without waiting for an automatic interview to be scheduled. Make sure you have all the details ready: date of the incident, police report number if you filed one, repair shop documentation, and be ready to explain how you solved the transportation issue (borrowing your brother's car) to show you made reasonable efforts to remain available for work.

Thanks for the detailed advice! I do have a copy of the police report and the repair shop invoice. I'll try calling EDD tomorrow. I've heard it's almost impossible to get through though.

I went through almost the identical situation (car broke down, missed 2 days of work) and getting through to EDD was a nightmare. After 37 calls over 3 days and never reaching anyone, I finally used a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an EDD rep within 20 minutes. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep was able to see that my claim was flagged for an eligibility interview, but she actually processed my payment on the spot after I explained the situation and that I had documentation. Saved me weeks of waiting. You can check them out at claimyr.com if you're desperate to get this resolved quickly.

Is that service legit? Sounds kinda sketchy. Has anyone else used it? I'm always worried about scams with these unemployment helper services.

It's legitimate. I've used it twice when I absolutely needed to get through. Not cheap but worth it when you need your payment urgently and can't wait weeks for an interview.

I might have to try that if I can't get through tomorrow. I've been calling the 833 number - is that the right one? What time do you recommend calling?

The 833-978-2511 number is correct. Best times to call are right when they open at 8am or between 4-5pm. Midday is usually the worst. When you get through, make sure you're speaking with a Tier 2 specialist who can actually help with claim issues. Tier 1 reps can only provide general information. Also, I should mention that the "good cause" exception for not accepting work definitely applies in situations like yours. Transportation issues due to crime/vandalism are considered good cause as long as you made efforts to resolve the issue promptly, which you did by borrowing your brother's car the next day. Make sure to emphasize this point when you speak with a rep.

Thank you! This makes me feel a bit better. I'll try calling right at 8am tomorrow and ask specifically for a Tier 2 specialist. Is there anything specific I should say to get transferred to one?

Just tell them you have a pending payment due to reporting you couldn't accept work for one day, and you need someone who can review your claim and make a determination. That usually gets you to a Tier 2. Good luck tomorrow!

Exactly right. And one more tip: if they try to tell you that you just need to wait for an interview to be scheduled, politely but firmly explain that you understand this situation qualifies for good cause and ask if they can review it now. Sometimes newer reps don't realize they have the authority to make these determinations without a formal interview, especially in clear-cut cases like yours.

My cousin work at EDD and she told me they super backed up with interview rite now. Like 5-6 week wait for most people. But she said transportation issues usually get approved in the end so dont worry too much.

5-6 WEEKS?! That's insane. I can't wait that long. My rent is due next week and I'm already behind on utilities. I'm definitely calling tomorrow.

I HATE how EDD punishes people for being honest!!! If you had just lied and said you were available every day, you'd have been paid already. The system is designed to delay payments for people who are honest about their situations. It's absolutely ridiculous. I ended up in the same boat last year when I reported being at a funeral for one day. ONE DAY! And they held my payment for a month!!

That's terrible, I'm sorry that happened to you. Did they eventually approve your payment after the interview? Did you have to provide any proof about the funeral?

Yes, they approved it after the interview. They asked a lot of questions about the funeral (whose it was, where it was held, etc.) but didn't actually ask for documentation. The whole thing felt invasive and unnecessary for a single day. The EDD rep even seemed embarrassed about having to ask all those questions.

I work as an employment consultant, and I can tell you that while the system seems punitive, it's actually designed to prevent fraud. The problem is that it often catches honest people in its net. For a single day of unavailability due to car vandalism, you absolutely have good cause, and any reasonable EDD representative will approve your payment. My advice is to call tomorrow with your documentation ready, but also prepare for the possibility of waiting for an interview. If you can't get through or get your payment released tomorrow, consider filing for a hardship advance on your pending payment by explaining your rent situation. Not many people know about this option, but EDD can sometimes issue partial payments while waiting for eligibility interviews in hardship cases.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning after 23 calls! Spoke with a very helpful Tier 2 specialist who reviewed my situation. She said the car vandalism absolutely counts as good cause for being unavailable that one day, especially since I had the police report. She released my payment right then! It should hit my account within 24-48 hours. So relieved! Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

That's awesome! So glad you got it resolved quickly! 23 calls isn't bad - it took me over 40 last time 😅
