EDD direct deposit switch made my Money Network card inaccessible - account not found error

I switched to direct deposit for my EDD payments about a week ago after getting tired of the Money Network card fees. The switch seemed to go through fine on the UI Online portal, but now I'm having a weird issue. When I try to check the remaining balance on my Money Network card (I had about $780 left), the website keeps saying 'no account matching your account number or social and date of birth.' I've triple-checked all my info and it's definitely correct. Has this happened to anyone else after switching to direct deposit? Should I be worried about losing access to that remaining balance? The new payments are coming through to my bank account fine, I just want to access that money still on the card.

yep happened to me too. they basically deactivate your card when u switch. you gotta call money network directly to get access again. super annoying

Thanks for confirming! Do you remember which number you called? The one on the back of the card doesn't seem to work anymore either.

This is actually a normal part of the process, though EDD doesn't explain it well. When you switch to direct deposit, the Money Network account gets disconnected from your EDD profile as a security measure. The good news is your money is still there! You need to call Money Network's dedicated customer service line at 1-888-233-5916, NOT the regular EDD number. Have your card number, social, and a recent transaction amount ready for verification. They'll help you regain access to spend down the remaining balance. For future reference, the best practice is to zero out your card balance before switching to direct deposit to avoid this hassle. You can transfer the funds to your bank account through the Money Network app before making the switch.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I'll call that number right away. Wish they'd warned about this when I opted for direct deposit. Really appreciate the help.

Wait, are you still getting payments? Because when I switched to direct deposit last month I couldn't access ANYTHING for like 2 weeks. No card, no direct deposit. EDD told me it was a "processing period" or something. So frustrating.

That sounds like a different issue. I had a similar problem when I switched, but it was because my bank account info had a typo. The system will reject the direct deposit and put your payments on hold if there's any mismatch with your banking details. Did you ever get it sorted out?

I went through this exact situation in February. The Money Network accounts are completely separate from the EDD direct deposit system. Here's what happens: 1. When you opt for direct deposit, EDD stops sending NEW payments to Money Network 2. Your Money Network account still exists with your remaining balance 3. The online portal connection sometimes gets broken during the switch Call Money Network directly at 1-888-233-5916. They'll verify your identity and restore your online access. I had about $550 stuck on my card and got it resolved in one call. Also worth noting - you have 90 days after your last deposit to use the Money Network card funds before they start charging inactivity fees. Don't wait too long!

This is super helpful, thank you! I had no idea about the 90-day inactivity fee policy. I'll definitely call them ASAP. Did they give you any trouble when you called?

EDD PURPOSELY MAKES THIS COMPLICATED TO KEEP YOUR MONEY!!! I switched to direct deposit and they LOCKED my Money Network card with over $1200 on it. Took SIX CALLS to get it fixed. They claim it's "security" but it's just them hoping you'll forget about the money on the card and they can keep it after a year!!

actually the money doesnt go back to edd. unclaimed funds go to the state controller's office as unclaimed property after like 3 years i think. my cousin worked for edd and told me about it. u can search for unclaimed money on the state website if u ever lost track of funds

If you're having trouble contacting Money Network or EDD about this issue, I highly recommend using Claimyr to get through to an actual human. I was in the same situation last month with a frozen Money Network account after switching to direct deposit. Spent days trying to reach someone at EDD. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes who fixed both my direct deposit setup AND helped me regain access to my Money Network card. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km It saved me from driving to an actual EDD office which would have taken a full day off work.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to try calling the Money Network number that others suggested first, but if that doesn't work I'll definitely check out Claimyr. The thought of spending hours on hold makes me want to scream.

Absolutely! The direct deposit is significantly more efficient. Payments typically arrive 1-2 business days after certification is processed, compared to 3-5 days with the Money Network card. Plus, as you mentioned, no more ATM fees or limited withdrawal amounts. It's definitely the better option for most people.

My sister had the same thing happen but when she called they said her card was CLOSED not just disconnected!!! Be careful they might have actually closed your account and then youd need to request a paper check for the remaining balance. Took her 6 weeks to get her money!!!

This is incorrect information. Money Network doesn't automatically close card accounts when you switch to direct deposit. The online access may be restricted, but the account remains active. The card itself will continue to work for purchases and ATM withdrawals in most cases, even if the online portal shows an error. If your sister's card was fully closed, that would be due to a different issue - possibly fraud prevention measures or a specific request she may have made.

UPDATE: Called the Money Network number (1-888-233-5916) and got it resolved! For anyone with the same issue - they explained that when you switch to direct deposit, your online access to the Money Network account gets disconnected as a security measure, but your funds are still there. I had to verify some personal info and my most recent transaction, and they restored my account access. My $780 is still there! Thanks everyone for your help!

Glad to hear you got it resolved so quickly! This is exactly how the process should work. For future reference (and for others reading this thread), you can also withdraw all funds via ATM or transfer them to your bank account through the Money Network app BEFORE switching to direct deposit to avoid this disconnection issue entirely.
