EDD claim transferred to EBT card without my consent - how to fix this mistake?
I just checked my EDD claim status and noticed they've somehow transferred my unemployment benefits to an EBT card instead of my usual direct deposit! I never requested this change and don't even have an EBT card. My last certification was processed 5 days ago, and the payment status shows 'paid' but nothing has hit my bank account. When I called the automated system, it confirmed the payment was issued but said something about 'alternative payment method.' Has anyone experienced this? How do I fix this mess and get my $847 benefit payment to my regular bank account where it belongs? I have bills due next week and can't afford this delay!

wait are u sure its actually EBT and not the regular EDD debit card? they're different things. EDD uses Money Network for debit cards, EBT is for food stamps/calfresh. check ur UI online account under payment methods to see whats listed

•Omg you might be right! I just checked and it does say 'Money Network' not EBT. I'm so confused - I've been getting direct deposit since I filed in January. Why would they suddenly switch me to a card without asking???

This happened to me last year. The EDD sometimes switches payment methods if there was an issue with your direct deposit information or if your bank rejected a payment. Check if you recently changed anything in your bank account. You'll need to contact EDD directly to switch back to direct deposit - you can't do it online once they've issued a Money Network card. The card should arrive within 7-10 business days, but you can call Money Network at 1-866-333-4606 to expedite the card delivery.

•Thank you!! I did recently change my address, but not my bank info. Maybe that triggered something in their system? I'll try calling EDD tomorrow.

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME AND IT TOOK 3 WEEKS TO GET MY CARD!!! Their system is SO BROKEN!! Call them immediately and demand they fix it because otherwise you'll be waiting forever and they don't care if your bills are late.

•If you need to reach EDD quickly, try Claimyr.com - they'll connect you to an EDD rep without the endless busy signals. Saved me hours of frustration when my payments got messed up. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

Just to clarify something for everyone: EDD benefits can come either through direct deposit or through the Money Network debit card. This is completely different from EBT, which is for CalFresh (food stamps) and CalWORKs benefits. If the payment method changed unexpectedly, it's usually because: 1. There was a problem with your bank account information 2. You changed your address without updating your direct deposit info 3. There was a fraud prevention measure activated on your account 4. Sometimes their system glitches during maintenance periods You'll need to call EDD at 1-800-300-5616 to have them switch you back to direct deposit for future payments. For your current payment, you'll likely need to wait for the Money Network card to arrive unless you can convince them to cancel it and reissue payment.

•This is really helpful information, thank you! I definitely mixed up EBT and the EDD card. I'm going to try calling tomorrow morning.

Make sure to call right when they open at 8am. I had a similar issue last month and it took me 3 days of calling to get through. Once I finally got someone on the phone, they were able to see that the system had flagged my account for a payment method review because I had recently changed my address. The rep was able to switch me back to direct deposit for future payments, but I still had to wait for the card for the current payment.

•That's exactly my situation! I changed my address about 2 weeks ago. Ugh, so frustrating that changing my address would affect my payment method without any notification. I'll try calling at 8am sharp. Thanks!

This happens all the time lol. The EDD system is from like 1985 or something. Just wait for the card, it's actually not bad to have as backup anyway. You can transfer money from it to your bank account once you activate it using the Money Network app.

I tried calling EDD for three days straight for a similar issue and couldn't get through. Finally used Claimyr.com and got connected to a rep in about 20 minutes. They explained that when you change your address, their system automatically defaults to sending a debit card as a security measure. The rep was able to note in my account that I wanted direct deposit for future payments. Still had to wait for the card though.

•That's good to know! I've been calling all morning and keep getting the 'we're experiencing high call volume' message. I might try Claimyr if I can't get through today. Did they charge a lot for the service?

•It was worth it for me since I was able to get my payment method fixed for future payments. Their site shows exactly how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

UPDATE: I called EDD this morning (got through after 45 minutes on hold) and the representative confirmed exactly what others have said here. When you change your address, their system automatically switches you to a debit card for security purposes. They were able to switch me back to direct deposit for future payments, but I'll still need to wait for the Money Network card for my current payment. They said the card should arrive within 7-10 business days, but it could be sooner. Thanks everyone for your help!

•Glad you got it resolved! Just a tip: when the card arrives, make sure to activate it right away and set up your PIN. Even if you switch back to direct deposit, keep the card in a safe place - it's valid for three years and can be useful if you ever have issues with direct deposit in the future.
