EDD payment shows 'paid' but money missing - expired Money Network card confusion
I'm completely lost about my unemployment payment. UI Online shows 'PAID' status for this week's certification, supposedly via direct deposit, but nothing has hit my bank account after 3 days. Back in January 2024 I was receiving payments fine, but can't remember how! I found my old Money Network card (I think that replaced the BofA cards?) but it says expired 11/2023. I'm so confused because I definitely got paid somehow earlier this year. The EDD payment history shows the funds were issued, but I have no clue where they went. Has anyone dealt with this payment method confusion? Do I need to request a replacement card or fix my direct deposit settings? My rent is due next week and I'm starting to panic!

The new Money Network cards replaced BofA in 2023. If your Money Network card expired and you haven't updated your payment preference to direct deposit, your payment is likely sitting in limbo. Call Money Network customer service at 1-888-393-5866 to check if they issued a replacement card automatically or if you need to request one. They should be able to tell you if funds are in your account even with an expired card.

•Thank you! I just called the number and you're right - they automatically issued a replacement card but sent it to my old address! They're going to send a new one. The rep said my money is sitting in the account and I can use the funds once I activate the new card. Such a relief!

•I just checked and you're right! Somehow my payment preference got switched back to the card. So weird because I swear I set up direct deposit. I'm going to change it right now for future payments. Thanks for the tip!

There are a few things to check here: 1. Log into UI Online and go to Profile > Payment Preference to verify your current method 2. If it shows direct deposit, check that your bank info is correct 3. If it shows debit card, contact Money Network as they automatically issue replacement cards 30-45 days before expiration 4. Be aware that changing payment methods can take 1-2 payment cycles to take effect If you switched from card to direct deposit earlier this year but later reopened your claim, the system sometimes defaults back to the card method. This happens quite often.

•This is 100% CORRECT! EDD's system is RIDICULOUS with this!! I've had my payment preferences reset THREE TIMES after reopening claims. They never warn you either! And then you waste WEEKS waiting for money that's sitting on some stupid card you don't have. The whole system is designed to make it harder to get YOUR MONEY.

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to an EDD rep? I was having a similar issue with my payments going to an expired card, and after wasting days trying to reach someone, I used claimyr.com and got connected to an agent in under 20 minutes. The rep was able to update my payment preference immediately and release my funds to direct deposit instead of waiting for a new card. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Worth it when you're dealing with missing money!

•I hadn't heard of this service before. I'll check it out if Money Network gives me any issues with the replacement card. Thanks for the suggestion!

when i reopened my claim last month i had almost the exact issue!! but mine was cuz my address changed since the last time i was on unemployment. try checking ur contact info in UI Online to see if they have your current address. if not, update it then call money network to see if they already sent a card that went to the wrong place

•That's exactly what happened to me too! Just got off the phone with Money Network and they confirmed they sent a replacement card to my old address back in October 2023 before it expired. I've updated my address everywhere now.

The EDD's system is COMPLETELY BROKEN when it comes to payment preferences!!! I've been fighting with them for weeks because they keep sending payments to my expired card instead of direct deposit. Called 49 TIMES before getting through. The so-called "customer service" rep blamed ME for not updating preferences even though I DID IT THREE TIMES!!! Don't expect them to help - you'll have to harass them daily to fix their mistakes!

Follow-up question: Did you receive a notification letter when you reopened your claim? It should have mentioned your payment preference setting. When you reopen, the system sometimes uses your last payment method from your previous claim period rather than any updates made since then. This is why many people get surprised by payments going to cards they thought were no longer active.

•You know what, I did get a letter but honestly I just skimmed it looking for the approval status. I bet it did mention the payment method and I completely missed it. Good lesson learned for the future!

Glad you were able to resolve this! For future reference (and for others reading this thread): 1. Always check payment preferences immediately after reopening a claim 2. Update your address with both EDD AND Money Network separately 3. If your card expires, Money Network typically sends a replacement 30-45 days before expiration 4. You can request expedited shipping of a replacement card for a fee 5. Even with an expired card, the money in your account is still accessible once you get a valid card Most importantly, any time you have a gap in your claim and then return to UI, double-check all your settings as if you're starting fresh.

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I'm going to save these instructions for future reference. This whole experience has been stressful but at least now I understand how the system works better.

Just wanted to add my experience - I had this exact same issue last year! My Money Network card expired in December 2023 and I didn't realize it until my January payment went missing. Turns out they automatically sent a replacement card to my address on file, but I had moved and forgot to update it with Money Network (even though I updated it with EDD). The key thing I learned is that EDD and Money Network have separate address systems - you have to update both! Also, if you're waiting for a replacement card, you can actually transfer funds from your Money Network account to your bank account through their website or app once you get access again. Just thought this might help someone else avoid the stress I went through!

•This is super helpful info! I didn't know about the separate address systems - that explains so much confusion. Quick question: when you say you can transfer funds through their website/app, do you mean even with an expired physical card? I'm waiting for my replacement but would love to get access to my money sooner if possible. Did you need any special info to log into the Money Network account online?
