EDD payment shows 'paid' but money missing - Money Network card confusion

I'm completely baffled about where my unemployment money went! My EDD account clearly shows I was paid via direct deposit on Monday (about $843), but it's now Friday and nothing has shown up in my bank account. I had a debit card from when I collected benefits back in 2022, but I remember that system changed to Money Network cards. I think I got a new card early last year when I had a brief period on unemployment, but I can't find it anywhere in my house. The EDD website is confusing me - when I log in, it just shows 'paid' status but doesn't tell me HOW it was paid or where the money went. I'm starting to panic because rent is due next week. Has anyone dealt with this payment confusion before? How do I figure out if they sent it to a card I don't have or if it's supposed to go to my bank account?

The exact same thing just happened to me last month!!! EDD is SO confusing with how they handle payments. When I called (took me like 3 days to get through), they told me my payment went to my MONEY NETWORK card and NOT my bank account even though I SWEAR I set up direct deposit. Apparently they default to the card unless you specifically set up direct deposit each time you open a new claim. Did you request a new Money Network card after your old BofA one expired?

Thanks for responding! I honestly don't remember if I ever got a Money Network card. Is that different from the BofA card? I'm so confused because I do remember getting paid somehow earlier this year, but it was just for a few weeks of benefits. I honestly can't recall if it was direct deposit or what.

This is a common issue with reopened claims. Here's what's likely happening: Even though the BofA cards are no longer used for new claims (they switched to Money Network in July 2023), the EDD system sometimes doesn't properly update your payment preference when you reopen a claim. First, check your UI Online account and click on "View Payment Activity" - it should show payment method. If it says "Debit Card" but doesn't specify which one, your money was probably sent to a Money Network card. You have two options: 1. Request a replacement Money Network card by calling 1-888-393-5866 2. Set up direct deposit for future payments by updating your preferences in UI Online For your current payment, you'll likely need to get the card replacement unless you already have active direct deposit set up.

Thank you SO much for this detailed explanation! I checked "View Payment Activity" and it does say "Debit Card" but doesn't say which one. I'll call that Money Network number right away to request a replacement card. Do you know how long it typically takes to get a replacement card? And will they be able to confirm over the phone if they actually sent my payment there?

EDD is absolutely USELESS at communicating these changes! When they switched from BofA to Money Network, they were supposed to notify everyone, but half the people I know never got any notification. I went through this nightmare last year - the system showed I was paid but NO MONEY anywhere for weeks! Turns out they mailed my Money Network card to an old address even though I'd updated my info in the system. The whole thing is a complete disaster and they don't care how much stress they cause people who are already struggling financially. I'd call them ASAP but good luck getting through... took me 47 calls in one day before I got a human being.

That sounds absolutely horrifying! I'm definitely worried that maybe they sent a card to my old address from last year. I moved in November and I thought I updated everything in the system, but now I'm not sure. Did you eventually get access to the payments they sent to the wrong address?

I've been helping people navigate this exact issue for months now. Here's what you need to know: 1. Money Network replaced Bank of America for EDD debit cards in 2023 2. When you reopen a claim, your payment preference doesn't automatically carry forward 3. If you don't actively select direct deposit when reopening, it defaults to the debit card option 4. You can check your payment method in UI Online under Account Information For your immediate issue: call Money Network at 1-888-393-5866. They can verify if a card was issued to you, confirm the mailing address, and expedite a replacement (usually 5-7 business days, but you can pay extra for faster delivery). For future payments: Log into UI Online, go to Profile, then Payment Preference, and select Direct Deposit if that's what you prefer.

Update: I finally got through to Money Network after being on hold for 45 minutes. They confirmed my payment was sent to their card, which apparently was mailed to me in February when I had that brief period on unemployment. They're sending a replacement card, but it'll take 7-10 business days to arrive! I asked if there was any way to get the money sooner, and they said I could pay $15 for expedited shipping (3 business days), which I did because I need that money for rent. Thanks everyone for helping me figure this out!

Glad you got it sorted!!! So frustrating that they make everything so complicated. Make sure you set up direct deposit for next time so you don't have to deal with this card nonsense again!

I had a similar issue with my payments going to a card I didn't have. I spent FOUR DAYS trying to get through to EDD with no luck - constant busy signals or getting disconnected after waiting on hold. I finally tried this service called Claimyr that got me through to an EDD rep in about 30 minutes. It costs money but was worth it for me since I needed to resolve my payment issue urgently. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km if you're interested. Their website is claimyr.com - might be worth considering if you need to talk to EDD again about getting direct deposit set up for future payments.

Thanks for the tip! I might need that if I have any more issues with setting up direct deposit. The Money Network rep told me I need to contact EDD directly to change my payment preference for future weeks, and I'm dreading trying to get through to them.

EXACTLY! It's absolutely ridiculous! They're dealing with people's LIVELIHOODS and can't even send a simple notification when they completely change how payments work. The incompetence is staggering.

One more tip about Money Network cards that might help others: once you receive your card, download their mobile app and set up account alerts. You'll get notifications whenever a payment is deposited. You can also set up transfers to your bank account through the app, which is much easier than trying to withdraw cash from ATMs (which often have fees unless you use specific in-network ATMs).

That's really helpful, thank you! I didn't realize they had an app. Will definitely set that up when I get my new card.
