EDD benefit transfer to bank account taking forever - should I be worried?

I certified for my EDD benefits on Sunday night and got the payment notification Monday morning showing 'paid' status in UI Online. I set up direct deposit to my Wells Fargo checking account three weeks ago (verified and everything), but it's now Thursday afternoon and still nothing in my account. The EDD website says 24-48 hours for transfers, but it's been over 72 hours now. My rent is due tomorrow, and I'm starting to panic. Is this normal delay or should I be concerned something went wrong? This is my first time using direct deposit instead of the Money Network card.

chill man its probably fine. edd systems are super slow sometimes. mine took like 4 days last month.

Thanks, that's a little reassuring. Did you get any kind of notification when it finally went through, or did it just randomly appear in your account?

The EDD website says 24-48 hours but that's BUSINESS hours, not including weekends. So if you certified Sunday night, payment shows Monday, it might not hit until Thursday or even Friday. Their system is old and banking transfers take forever.

^^^THIS! Everyone always forgets about the business days part. I was freaking out my first time too!

I switched from the Money Network card to direct deposit last month, and my first payment took 5 full days to appear in my checking account. After that, the next payment only took 3 days. I think there's some extra verification the first time they send money to a new account. If UI Online shows 'paid' status, the money is coming - just might take until Friday or even Monday.

That makes sense about the first deposit taking longer. I just wish they warned about that somewhere! It's stressful when you're counting on that money for bills.

This is unfortunately common with EDD direct deposits. The 24-48 hour timeframe they mention is often inaccurate. A few things to check: 1. Verify the account number is correct in your UI Online profile 2. Check that your payment status is actually "Paid" not "Processing" 3. Contact your bank to see if they have any pending deposits If you need to speak with EDD about this issue, I'd recommend Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a representative quickly. They have a service that helps you bypass the phone wait times. I used them when my payment was delayed last month and got through in 20 minutes instead of spending days redialing. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

Thanks for the suggestions. I double-checked my account number and it's correct. Status definitely says "Paid" with the right amount. I'll call my bank this afternoon to check for pending deposits. If nothing by tomorrow, I might try that Claimyr service - spending hours getting busy signals from EDD sounds like torture.

THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME!!! The EDD system is BROKEN!! I waited 6 days for my money and had to pay late fees on my electric bill because of their incompetence. When I finally got through to someone after 47 calls (not exaggerating), they just said "it takes time for the banks to process" - WHAT A JOKE!!! Next time I'm sticking with the Money Network card even though I hate the fees. At least I know when I'll get paid!

Actually, the Money Network card usually posts the payment 1 day AFTER direct deposit would hit your bank. Not sure why you had such a long delay, might've been a glitch.

The transfer time depends on both EDD and your bank's processing systems. Wells Fargo specifically can sometimes hold ACH transfers for 1-2 additional business days for risk management, especially for first-time transfers from government sources. If your UI Online shows 'paid' status, the money has been released from EDD's side. Most likely, it's either in transit or being held briefly by Wells Fargo. If you don't see it by tomorrow (which would be day 4), I recommend calling Wells Fargo specifically and asking about pending government deposits. Sometimes they can see it in their system before it's visible to you online. For future reference, transfers initiated on Mondays typically arrive by Wednesday or Thursday. If you certified on Sunday, the process starts Monday morning, so Thursday-Friday is the normal timeframe.

This is super helpful - thank you! I'll definitely call Wells Fargo in the morning if it doesn't show up tonight. Good to know this timing is somewhat normal. Do you know if subsequent transfers after the first one go through faster usually?

Yes, subsequent transfers typically process faster. Once your bank has established a pattern with EDD deposits, they usually release the funds more quickly. After 2-3 payments, you should see a more consistent 2-3 day window from certification to deposit.

Thats not always true. I've had direct deposit for 6 months and STILL sometimes it takes 5+ days!!! Depends if mercury is in retrograde or if the EDD computers decide to actually work that day 🙄

YES!!! It literally just posted to my account like 10 minutes ago. What a relief! Seems like it took about 3.5 days total. Thanks everyone for helping me stay calm while waiting!
