EDD: Setting up new unemployment claim after previous one ended - Need advice!
Hey everyone, I'm trying to set up a new unemployment claim with EDD. My previous claim ended in March and I'm not sure how to proceed. Anyone have experience with this? Also, I'm worried about missing their call since they close soon. Any advice on what to discuss with the agent or how to make sure I don't miss their call would be really helpful!

Ugh, dealing with EDD is always a nightmare. I've been there, buddy. Here's what you need to know: • Your benefit year typically lasts 12 months, so if your last claim was in March, you should be eligible for a new one now. • When you talk to the agent, have your employment history for the last 18 months ready. They'll ask about dates, employers, and wages. • Be prepared to explain why you're unemployed again. • Ask about any new programs or extensions you might be eligible for. • Make sure your contact info is up to date in their system. Good luck! The hold times are insane, so be patient.

•This is solid advice 💯 I wish I had known all this when I filed my claim last year. Saved me hours of frustration!

•Quick question - do you know if they still require the one-week waiting period for benefits? I heard it was waived during covid but idk if thats still a thing

•@profile 3 As far as I know, the waiting period is back in effect. But things change so often with EDD, it's best to ask the agent directly when you get through.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

•I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo. They even refund you if they don't get through.

•How long did it take for them to get someone on the line for you?

•@profile 7 It took about 2 hours for me, but I've heard it can vary. Still beats calling yourself all day!

pro tip: call right when they open in the morning. I got through in like 15 minutes last week doing that

Anyone else feel like the EDD system is designed to be as confusing as possible? 🤔 I swear they make it hard on purpose to discourage people from claiming benefits.

•Nah, I think it's just underfunded and understaffed. Still sucks tho

Hey OP, make sure you have all your income info ready when you call. They'll ask for your gross earnings (before taxes) for each employer in your base period. Also, if you worked any side gigs or had self-employment income, have that info handy too. Good luck!

•Thanks for the heads up! I did some freelance work last year, so I'll make sure to have those numbers ready.

•Have you tried contacting your local assembly member's office? They can sometimes help push things through faster.

Quick question - does anyone know if EDD is still offering those pandemic extensions? Or are we back to regular benefits only?

•Pretty sure all the pandemic stuff ended last year. We're back to the regular system now, for better or worse 🤷♂️
