EDD Extension Eligibility: First-Time Caller Seeking Advice on Unemployment Benefits
Hey everyone, I'm calling EDD about my unemployment benefits. I'm wondering if there are any extensions available or if I'm out of luck. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What should I expect when I talk to them? It's my first time asking about an extension, so I'm not sure what to prepare or what questions to ask. Any advice would be really appreciated!

I went through this last month. Here's what you need to know: • First, check if you're eligible for an extension. This usually depends on your current claim status and how long you've been receiving benefits. • When you call, ask about the PEUC (Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation) if it's still available. This was the main extension program. • Have your claim ID and personal info ready. They'll ask for it. • Be prepared to explain why you're still unemployed and what efforts you've made to find work. • Ask about any additional requirements or paperwork you might need to submit. • Find out about the timeline - how long it might take to process the extension if you're eligible. Good luck! The system can be frustrating, but stay persistent.

This is super helpful, thanks for laying it all out! 🙏 Did you end up getting your extension?

Yeah, I did! Took about 3 weeks to process after I called. Just make sure you keep certifying for benefits even while you're waiting.

Ugh, good luck getting through to anyone. I've been trying for weeks and can never get past the automated system. It's a total joke 🤡

Same here. It's like they don't want us to actually get help. So frustrating!

I found a way to get through! There's this service called claimyr.com that calls for you, stays on hold, and then connects you when a real person picks up. It costs $20 but it worked for me. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

Wait, for real? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

Yeah, it's legit. I was skeptical too but I was desperate. It saved me hours of frustration. Just sharing what worked for me 🤷♂️

make sure you ask about work search requirements for the extension. They changed the rules recently and you might need to prove youre actively looking for work

It depends on your state. Some still have extended benefits programs. Best to call and check your specific situation.

Yeah, most of the big federal extensions are gone, but there might be state-specific options. Don't give up hope!

Pro tip: call right when they open in the morning. Way easier to get through. Also, be super nice to the rep, even if youre frustrated. They deal with angry people all day and are more likely to help if youre pleasant.

This is so true. I used to work in a call center (not EDD but similar). Being nice goes a long way!

Has anyone tried applying for PUA instead of regular UI? I heard its easier to get approved for extensions that way.

PUA ended last year, my dude. That ship has sailed 🚢

Honestly, at this point, I've given up on EDD and started doing gig work. It's not ideal, but at least it's some income while I look for a permanent job. Maybe consider that as a backup plan?

What kind of gig work are you doing? I've been thinking about trying that too.

Mostly Uber Eats and DoorDash. It's flexible and you can start pretty quick. Just be aware of the wear and tear on your car if you go that route.
