EDD Name Change Process for Pregnancy Disability - What Docs Needed?
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a situation here. I recently got married and changed my last name, but now I'm pregnant and planning to go on disability soon. I'm wondering what documents I need to submit to update my name with EDD. Has anyone gone through this process before? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Congrats on your marriage and pregnancy! 🎉👶 For updating your name with EDD, you'll need to submit a copy of your marriage certificate. Make sure its a certified copy, not just a photocopy. You can usually get this from the county clerk's office where you got married.

•Thank you so much! Do you know if I need to submit anything else along with the marriage certificate?

•You're welcome! As far as I know, the marriage certificate should be enough. But it might be a good idea to include a brief letter explaining your situation and why you're updating your name. Better safe than sorry!

•Just a heads up, sometimes they ask for additional ID too. I had to send in a copy of my driver's license along with my marriage cert. Might wanna call and double-check what they need.

Ugh, dealing with EDD is such a pain 🙄 I changed my name last year and it took FOREVER for them to process it. Make sure you start this process ASAP, especially if you're planning on going on disability soon.

Hey there! Just wanted to share that I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at EDD. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

•Wow, that sounds too good to be true. Is it legit? Has anyone else tried this?

•I was skeptical at first too, but it really did work for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Definitely worth the $20 in my opinion.

•I've used it twice now. It's legit. Beats sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected constantly.

Don't forget to update your name with Social Security first! EDD cross-references with them, so if the names don't match, it could cause issues down the line.

•Oh wow, I didn't even think about that. Thanks for the tip!

•This is so important! I learned this the hard way and it delayed my benefits for weeks. 😫

Just a friendly reminder to everyone: ALWAYS KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING YOU SEND TO EDD!!! 📸 You never know when you might need to prove you sent something.

•💯 This! I take pictures of all my documents before I send them in. Has saved my butt more than once.

Hey OP, congrats on the baby! 🍼 Just wanted to give you a heads up that pregnancy disability is different from regular SDI. Make sure you're applying for the right program. Your doctor will need to certify your disability start date.

•Thank you! I didn't realize there was a difference. Do you know where I can find more info about pregnancy disability specifically?

•Sure thing! Check out the EDD website, they have a whole section on Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL). Also, your HR department should be able to provide you with info specific to your company's policies.

lol good luck dealing with edd 🤡 took them 3 months to process my name change and by then I had already given birth and gone back to work 🙃

Has anyone here successfully updated their name online? I've heard mixed things about whether it's possible or if you have to mail everything in.

•Last I checked, you couldn't do it online. Had to mail everything in. But that was a year ago, so maybe it's changed?

•Nope, still gotta mail it in. EDD's online system is stuck in the stone age 🦕

Pro tip: If you're mailing in documents, send them via certified mail with return receipt. It's a few bucks extra but gives you proof they received your stuff. Trust me, it's worth it.

•That's a great idea, thanks! I'll definitely do that.

Hey Mia! I went through this exact same process about 6 months ago when I was pregnant with my second. Here's what worked for me: I sent in my certified marriage certificate along with a copy of my updated driver's license and Social Security card (make sure you update SS first like Harper mentioned!). I also included a brief cover letter explaining that I was updating my name due to marriage and would be applying for pregnancy disability soon. The whole process took about 6-8 weeks, so definitely start ASAP! Also, make sure your doctor is aware of the name change so there's no confusion when they submit your disability paperwork. Good luck with everything! 💕

•This is super helpful, thank you so much Finley! 6-8 weeks sounds like a long time but at least I know what to expect now. Quick question - did you have any issues with the timing since you were pregnant? I'm worried about cutting it too close to when I need to start my disability leave.

Hey Mia! Congratulations on your marriage and pregnancy! 🎉 I actually just went through this exact process a few months ago. Here's what I learned: definitely get your Social Security updated first (as Harper mentioned), then send EDD your certified marriage certificate, updated driver's license copy, and I'd also recommend including your new Social Security card copy. I sent everything via certified mail and it took about 4-6 weeks to process. The key thing is to start this process NOW - don't wait until you're closer to your due date because EDD moves slowly. Also, make sure to keep your employer in the loop about the name change so there's no confusion when your doctor submits the pregnancy disability paperwork. The last thing you want is delays when you actually need your benefits! Feel free to ask if you have any other questions - happy to help a fellow mama navigate this bureaucratic maze! 😊
