Name change on EDD account before starting maternity SDI - urgent help needed!
I'm freaking out a little! I'm supposed to start my pregnancy disability leave THIS FRIDAY (doctor put me on bedrest at 36 weeks), but I just realized my EDD account is still under my maiden name from when I collected unemployment like 5 years ago. I got married 2 years ago and my name on everything else (Social Security, work, insurance, etc.) has been updated to my married name. Also, my mailing address has changed since then. I managed to log into my old EDD account with my email, but I can't figure out how to update my last name or address anywhere in the system! When I file my SDI claim, should I use my married name that matches my current ID and work records? Or use my maiden name to match the EDD account? I'm worried if the names don't match, my payments will get delayed or denied completely. Does anyone know if there's a way to update my personal info before filing? Or should I just create a completely new account? Getting so anxious about this since my leave starts in 2 days and I can't afford any payment delays with a baby coming!

You need to use your LEGAL name on the SDI claim form (DE2501) - which should be your married name if you've officially changed it with Social Security. I went through something similar last year when I filed for pregnancy disability. You actually can't update your name directly through the online portal - you have to call EDD and verify your identity to get the name updated in their system. Make sure you have your marriage certificate handy when you call.

•Thank you! Do you think I should try to get this fixed before filing on Friday? Or file the claim with my married name anyway and deal with the name mismatch later? I'm just scared of messing something up that would delay my payments...

just file with married name and upload copy of marriage certificate with your claim!!! thats what i did last year and had no issues. dont stress about it so much, EDD deals with this all the time.

I called EDD last month to update my name after getting married (planning ahead for my maternity leave in June) and it literally took 3.5 HOURS of being on hold!!! Then they transferred me TWICE and I got disconnected. So frustrating. Had to call back the next day and wait another 2 hours. The system is completely broken. They said they needed to verify my info over the phone before they could update my name in the system. I don't recommend waiting until right before your leave starts because the name change process can take time to process in their system even after you reach someone.

•Try using Claimyr if you need to reach EDD quickly - it's the only way I got through when dealing with my name change situation. Their system connects you without the crazy wait times. I watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5) and was skeptical, but it actually worked! Got through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of hours. Check out claimyr.com - totally worth it for time-sensitive stuff like this.

Listen, there's actually a specific procedure for name changes with EDD. You need to submit form DE 1101 (Claimant Change of Name). You can download it from the EDD website, fill it out, and upload it along with a copy of your marriage certificate through your UI Online account. The name change typically takes 7-10 business days to process in their system. Regarding your address change - you CAN update that directly in your UI Online account under "Profile" then "Contact Information." Your address change should take effect immediately. As for your immediate SDI claim, I recommend: 1. File your claim using your CURRENT LEGAL NAME (married name) 2. In section 9 of the DE 2501 form (Additional Information), note that you've submitted a name change request and your EDD account was previously under your maiden name 3. Upload both your marriage certificate and the DE 1101 form as supporting documents This way, you're being fully transparent and providing all documentation they need to connect your previous account to your current claim.

•This is EXACTLY what I needed to know! Thank you so much for the detailed instructions. I'll download the DE 1101 form right now and get everything submitted tomorrow. I really appreciate the specific advice!

My sister had this exact same problem when she had her baby! This was back in 2022 though so maybe things changed. They denied her first payment because the names didnt match and she had to appeal it which took like 3 extra weeks to sort out. Super stressful with a newborn! definitely try to get it fixed beforehand if you can.

I work with SDI claims frequently, and here's what you need to know about name changes and your immediate deadline: 1. For your SDI claim filing this Friday: Use your current legal married name that matches your Social Security records. This is critical because EDD verifies your identity through SSA. 2. For your existing EDD account: You'll need to update your name by submitting form DE 1101 as mentioned above. However, since you're filing for disability (not unemployment), you'll be using the SDI Online system rather than UI Online. 3. Important distinction: While your old UI account and SDI account are connected in the broader EDD system, they function somewhat independently. Your SDI claim creates a new claim record that's linked to your Social Security Number. 4. Recommended action: File your SDI claim using your current legal name. In the comments/additional information section, note that you previously had an EDD account under your maiden name. Then provide documentation (marriage certificate) to support the name change. 5. Address update: You should update this ASAP in your online profile before filing the claim to ensure any mailed documents go to the correct location. The key is ensuring your name on the SDI claim matches your current legal name on file with Social Security and your employer (who will need to verify your wages). Don't create a new account - this would cause more confusion since your SSN would then have multiple accounts.

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! This really helps clear things up. I just updated my address in my profile and I'll make sure to use my married name on the SDI claim with a note about my previous maiden name. Should I also contact my doctor's office to make sure they use my married name on their portion of the claim form?

Yes, absolutely contact your doctor's office ASAP to confirm they'll use your married name on their portion of the DE 2501. If your doctor submits with your maiden name and you submit with your married name, it could delay processing while EDD tries to match the two parts of your claim. Make sure all paperwork uses the same name!
