EDD name change before pregnancy disability claim - help!

Hey everyone, I'm pregnant and planning to go on disability soon. The thing is, my last name has changed since I last dealt with EDD. What do I need to do to update my info and apply for disability? Any advice on handling this situation would be super helpful!

Congrats on the pregnancy! 🎉 Here's what you need to do: 1. Update your name with EDD first. You'll need to provide legal documents (marriage certificate, court order, etc.) showing the name change. 2. Submit these docs to EDD. You can usually do this online through your EDD account or by mail. 3. Wait for confirmation that your name has been updated in their system. 4. Once that's done, you can apply for disability as normal. Make sure to start this process ASAP because government agencies can be slow sometimes. Good luck!

This is great advice! I went thru something similar last year. Just wanna add - keep copies of EVERYTHING you send them. EDD lost my docs once and I had to resend 🙄

how long did it take for edd to update ur name? im in a similar boat and worried about timing

@profile 3 It took about 2-3 weeks for me, but I've heard it can vary. Best to start the process early just in case!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at EDD. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

Yeah, it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo

Thanks for the heads up! I'll get on it right away. How far in advance would you recommend starting the process?

id say at least a month before u plan to apply for disability. better safe than sorry!

Pro tip: If you're having trouble reaching EDD, try calling right when they open in the morning. I've had better luck getting through that way.

Anyone else feel like the whole system is designed to be as confusing as possible? 🤔 It's like they WANT us to make mistakes...

Preach! 🙌 I swear I need a law degree just to understand half the forms they make us fill out

ikr? its a total clown show 🤡

Hey OP, don't forget to check if your employer offers any additional maternity benefits. Some companies have their own disability insurance that might be easier to deal with than EDD.
