Need help extending SDI claim for postpartum issues after PFL - EDD transition advice?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I've been on disability for childbirth and now I'm dealing with some postpartum issues. I'm wondering if I can extend my current disability claim or if I need to file a new one. Also, I'm currently on Paid Family Leave and I'm not sure how that'll work when I switch back to disability. Anyone been through this before? Any advice would be super helpful!

I've been through this exact situation! Here's what you need to know: • First, check the status of your current claim. Log into your EDD account and see if it's still active. • If your claim has expired, you'll likely need to file a new one. But if it's still within the benefit period, you might be able to extend it. • Gather all your medical documentation. You'll need this whether you're extending or filing a new claim. • For the transition from PFL to DI, it's not always automatic. You should: 1. Inform EDD about the change 2. Ask about any specific steps to ensure a smooth transition 3. Confirm the end date of your PFL and start date of your DI Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! It's really helpful. Do you know if there's a specific form I need to fill out for the transition from PFL to DI?

You're welcome! As far as I know, there isn't a specific form just for the transition. You'll likely need to file a new DI claim (DE 2501) when your PFL ends. But definitely double-check with EDD, rules can change!

Just wanted to add - make sure you don't have any gaps in your paperwork. I messed up my dates once and it was a NIGHTMARE to fix. 😩

ugh, the EDD is such a mess. good luck getting anyone on the phone to help you figure this out 🙄

For real tho. I spent like 3 weeks trying to get through. It's ridiculous.

I found a way to get someone on the phone actually. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

$20 just to talk to someone? That's crazy! Does it actually work?

Yeah, I know it sounds sketchy, but it really did work for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth it IMO.

Wow, that's wild. Might have to try it out. Thx for the tip! 👍

Has anyone else noticed that the EDD website is always "under maintenance" when you need it most? 🤦‍♀️

omg yes!!! its like they KNOW when im trying to file something important 😤

Pro tip: Try accessing the site super early in the morning or late at night. Less traffic = better chance of getting through!

Preach! 🙌 It's like they make it complicated on purpose.

Quick question - does anyone know if the 12 month period for SDI resets after childbirth? Or does it continue from your last claim?

0 coins

Pretty sure it continues from your last claim, but don't quote me on that. Best to check with EDD directly.

It depends on your specific situation. If you're going back on SDI for a different condition, it might be treated as a new claim. Definitely something to clarify with them.
