EDD Claim Issues: Can't File for SDI Due to Recent Name Change - ID.me Mismatch
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I recently changed my name and now I'm trying to file for disability during my maternity leave. The problem is, I can't even start the claim because my ID.me account doesn't match my current name. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice on how to get this sorted out?

Ugh, that sucks! I went through something similar when I got married. Here's what worked for me: 1. Update your ID.me account first. Go to their website and follow the steps to change your name. 2. Once that's done, contact EDD directly. Explain the situation and ask them to update their records. 3. Be prepared to provide documentation of your name change (marriage certificate, court order, etc.). 4. After EDD confirms the update, try filing your claim again. It might take a few days for everything to sync up, but hang in there! Good luck!

•Thank you so much! This is really helpful. Did you have to wait long for EDD to update their records after you contacted them?

•It took about a week for me, but I've heard it can vary. Just keep following up if it seems to be taking too long. Don't let them forget about you! 😉

•This is solid advice! I'd add that you should keep a record of all your communications with EDD. It can be a lifesaver if things get messy later on.

Have you tried calling EDD directly? Sometimes talking to a real person can help sort these things out faster.

•Pro tip: I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site called claimyr.com. It's a calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then sends the call to your phone when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it worked for me. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

•Yeah, I was skeptical at first too, but it really did work. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

•Idk man, paying to talk to a government agency feels wrong. Shouldn't this be free?

•I get where you're coming from, but after spending days trying to get through, I was desperate. It's not ideal, but it solved my problem 🤷♂️

This happened to my sister last year. It's a total pain, but she eventually got it sorted. Just be persistent and don't give up!

Quick question - have you already legally changed your name everywhere else? Like Social Security, DMV, etc? Make sure all that's done first or it'll just cause more headaches down the line.

•Yes, I've updated everything else. EDD and ID.me are the last hurdles!

Hey, former EDD employee here. Here's a pro tip: when you do get through to someone, ask them to notate your account with the name change info. This can help prevent issues if you need to call back later. Also, be sure to mention you're pregnant - there are sometimes special procedures for expediting claims for expectant mothers.

I'm in the same boat, OP! Changed my name after getting married and now I'm drowning in paperwork. Let me know if you figure out a good solution!

I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago! The key thing that saved me time was updating my ID.me account BEFORE contacting EDD. Once I had my ID.me name updated with all the proper documentation uploaded, EDD was able to sync everything much faster. Also, if you have your old EDD account login info, don't create a new account - just wait for them to update the existing one. Creating a duplicate account will just make things more complicated. The whole process took me about 10 days total, but most of that was waiting for the systems to sync up. Hang in there - you'll get through this! 💪

•This is super helpful! I was actually about to create a new account thinking it would be easier, but you just saved me from making that mistake. Did you have to upload any specific documents to ID.me for the name change, or was a marriage certificate enough?

•For ID.me, I uploaded my marriage certificate, updated driver's license, and Social Security card with the new name. The marriage certificate was the main document they needed, but having all three made the verification go much smoother. ID.me actually has a pretty clear checklist on their site for name changes - definitely check that out before you start the process!

I'm dealing with a similar name change situation right now! Just wanted to add that if you're having trouble getting through to EDD by phone, try calling right when they open (8am) or during lunch hours when the call volume might be lower. Also, I found that having all your documents ready before you start any part of this process really helps - marriage certificate, updated SS card, new driver's license, etc. Keep copies of everything! The whole system is definitely frustrating but it sounds like you're on the right track. Wishing you a smooth resolution and congratulations on your upcoming little one! 🍼

•Thank you so much for the timing tips! I never thought about calling during lunch hours - that's actually brilliant. I've been trying to get through in the mornings but maybe switching up the time will help. And yes, having all the documents ready is definitely key. I learned that the hard way when I first tried to update my ID.me account and had to scramble to find everything. Thanks for the well wishes too! 😊

I just went through this exact nightmare last month! Here's what finally worked for me: First, update your ID.me account completely - upload your marriage certificate or court order for the name change, new driver's license, and updated Social Security card. ID.me took about 3-4 business days to verify everything. Once that was done, I called EDD early morning (around 8:15am seemed to work best) and explained the situation. The rep was actually really helpful and updated my EDD profile to match my ID.me account on the spot. The whole thing took about 2 weeks total, but most of that was just waiting for verifications. Don't give up - the system is clunky but it does work eventually! Also, keep detailed notes of every call you make with dates and reference numbers. Good luck with your maternity leave claim! 🤞
