EDD account showing maiden name, can't verify ID or set up direct deposit for DI claim. Help!
Hey everyone, I'm having a major issue with my EDD account. When I tried to submit my disability insurance claim, I noticed that my account is showing my maiden name instead of my married name. Apparently, it synced with an old Real ID account. Now I can't verify my identity or set up direct deposit for my benefits. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice on how to update my name with EDD?

Ugh, that sucks! I had a similar issue last year. Have you tried calling EDD directly? Fair warning tho, their hold times are insane 🙄

•Yeah, I've been trying to call for days but no luck getting through. It's so frustrating!

•Pro tip: call right when they open. I got through after only 30 mins on hold that way.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

•Yep, totally legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

•How long did it take for them to get someone on the line?

•It took about 2 hours for me, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music the whole time. They just called me when an agent picked up.

Have you tried updating your info through the EDD website? Sometimes theres an option to change personal details in your account settings.

This happened to my sister last month. She had to fax (yes, fax in 2023 🙄) a copy of her marriage certificate and a letter explaining the situation. Took about 2 weeks to process, but it worked!

The EDD system is such a mess rn. I've been waiting 3 months for them to process a simple address change. Feels like were living in the stone age with there tech 🦕

•For real! You'd think with all the taxes we pay, they could afford to upgrade their systems 🙄💸

Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather your documents: marriage certificate, ID, Social Security card, and any EDD correspondence. 2. Write a clear, concise letter explaining the name discrepancy. 3. Fill out the DE 1326C form (you can find it on the EDD website). 4. Fax everything to the EDD at 1-855-027-1940 (double-check this number on their site). 5. Follow up with a phone call in about a week if you don't hear back. 6. If all else fails, contact your local state representative's office. They often have liaisons who can help with EDD issues. Remember to be patient and persistent. Good luck!

•This is solid advice. I'd add: keep copies of EVERYTHING you send them. EDD has a habit of 'losing' documents 🙄

I'm in the same boat, OP. Been dealing with name issues for months. Starting to feel like I'm gonna need a lawyer to sort this out 😩

•Oof, hope it doesn't come to that. Have you tried reaching out to your local assemblymember? They can sometimes cut through the red tape.

I went through this exact same thing last year! The key is to be super organized with your paperwork. I had to submit my marriage certificate, updated driver's license, and a notarized affidavit explaining the name change. It took about 3 weeks total, but once they updated it, everything worked smoothly. Make sure you keep calling to check on the status - sometimes they sit on these requests unless you stay on top of them. Also, if you have any old W2s or tax documents under your maiden name, bring those too as proof of the connection between the two names. Hang in there! 💪

•This is super helpful! @52b07710cbef Did you have to submit everything by fax or were you able to upload documents online? I'm also curious if you faced any issues with direct deposit setup during the process or if that got resolved automatically once the name was updated?

•@52b07710cbef Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really encouraging to hear it worked out. Did you have any trouble with the notarized affidavit part? I'm not sure where to get that done or what exactly it needs to say. Also wondering if there's a specific format EDD prefers for these documents?

I'm going through something similar right now! My EDD account is also showing outdated info that's causing verification issues. One thing I discovered is that you can also try visiting a local EDD office in person if you're able to - sometimes they can update things on the spot that take weeks to process through mail/fax. I know it's not ideal with their limited hours, but might be worth checking if there's one near you. Also, make sure to document every interaction (phone calls, fax confirmations, etc.) with dates and reference numbers. EDD seems to work better when you can reference specific case numbers. Hope you get this sorted soon! 🤞

•Great point about visiting in person! I hadn't thought of that option. @7668d7ca1e1a Do you know if they require appointments for these kinds of issues, or can you just walk in? I'm also curious about the reference numbers - when you call EDD, do they automatically give you one, or do you have to ask for it? I want to make sure I'm documenting everything properly from the start. Thanks for the tip about keeping records - sounds like organization is key with EDD!

I had this exact same issue when I got married and changed my name! The EDD system can be really frustrating with name updates. Here's what worked for me: I ended up having to submit a Name Change Request form (DE 1326C) along with certified copies of my marriage certificate and updated ID. The trick is to fax everything AND mail it - redundancy helps with EDD. Also, when you call (and you will need to call multiple times), ask specifically for the "Technical Services" department - they handle account profile updates. It took about 4 weeks total, but once it was updated, I could verify my identity and set up direct deposit without any issues. Don't give up! The system is clunky but it does eventually work. Make sure to keep copies of everything you send them because they definitely lose stuff sometimes 😅

•This is such great advice! @69e3c4673594 I'm definitely going to try the dual submission approach - fax AND mail sounds smart given EDD's track record with losing documents. Quick question: when you asked for "Technical Services," did you have to go through the regular phone menu first, or is there a direct number for them? Also, did you have any issues with the certified copies vs regular copies, or do they specifically require certified ones? I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row before I start this process. Thanks for sharing your experience - it's really helpful to hear from someone who actually got through the maze! 🙏

I'm dealing with a similar name issue right now - it's such a headache! One thing that might help while you're waiting for the name change to process: try using your maiden name consistently across all EDD interactions for now. I know it's frustrating, but sometimes fighting the system on multiple fronts makes things worse. Also, if you have any old pay stubs or tax documents under your maiden name, keep those handy - EDD sometimes asks for historical proof that you worked under that name. The verification process can be tricky when names don't match perfectly. Definitely follow the advice about the DE 1326C form and certified documents - that seems to be the most reliable path forward. Hang in there, you'll get through this! 💪

•That's really smart advice about using the maiden name consistently for now! @ea5bda5990dd I hadn't thought about that approach, but you're totally right - fighting the system on multiple fronts probably just creates more confusion. I'm definitely going to gather up my old pay stubs and tax docs under my maiden name before I start the process. It's frustrating to have to go backwards like that, but if it helps get things moving faster, it's worth it. Thanks for the practical tip! 🙏

I went through this nightmare last year! The Real ID sync issue is so common - happened to me too when I got married. Here's what finally worked: I had to submit form DE 1326C (Name Change Request) with my marriage certificate AND a copy of my current driver's license. The key is to include a cover letter explaining that your EDD account synced with old Real ID info. I faxed everything to 1-855-027-1940 and also mailed copies (certified mail) to be safe. It took about 3-4 weeks but once they updated it, the identity verification worked perfectly and I could set up direct deposit. Pro tip: when you call to follow up, specifically ask for the "Disability Insurance" department since it's a DI claim - they handle these faster than regular UI claims. Don't give up, it's totally fixable! 🙏

•This is exactly what I needed to hear! @8481cac4f8b0 Thank you for mentioning the Real ID sync issue specifically - I had no idea this was such a common problem. The tip about asking for the "Disability Insurance" department is gold! I've been getting bounced around between different departments when I call. Quick question: did you have any issues with the fax going through to that number? I've heard some people say EDD's fax system can be unreliable. Also, when you sent the certified mail, do you remember what address you used? I want to make sure I'm covering all my bases like you did. Really appreciate you sharing the timeline too - 3-4 weeks gives me realistic expectations! 🙏

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this! The Real ID sync issue is such a pain. I went through something similar when my account pulled old info from DMV records. One thing that helped me was calling the EDD Identity Verification unit directly at 1-866-362-8817 - they specifically handle these kinds of mismatched name/ID issues. They were able to walk me through exactly what documents I needed and even put a note on my account while I was gathering everything. Also, if you have your old Social Security card or any government documents in your maiden name, bring those too - it helps establish the connection between your old and new identity. The whole process took me about 5 weeks, but having that direct line to the ID verification team made it way less stressful. They actually know what they're doing unlike some of the general customer service reps. Hope this helps! 🤞

•This is super helpful! @dd1b8aa2a47e I had no idea there was a dedicated Identity Verification unit - that's exactly what I needed to know! The direct number (1-866-362-8817) is amazing, thank you for sharing that. I'm definitely going to call them first before trying the general customer service line. It's such a relief to know there are people who actually specialize in these name/ID mismatch issues. I'll make sure to gather my old Social Security card and any other government docs in my maiden name before I call. Did you find they were pretty responsive when you called that number, or did you still have long hold times? Either way, it sounds way better than getting bounced around between departments. Thanks for giving me hope that this is actually fixable! 🙏

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! My EDD account is stuck showing my maiden name from an old DMV record and it's blocking everything. Reading through all these responses is giving me so much hope - I had no idea this was such a common issue or that there were specific departments that handle it better. @dd1b8aa2a47e that Identity Verification unit number is a game changer, thank you! @8481cac4f8b0 @69e3c4673594 the detailed steps you shared are incredibly helpful too. I'm going to gather all my documents (marriage cert, old SS card, pay stubs) and try both the phone route and the fax/mail combo approach. It's frustrating that we have to jump through so many hoops, but at least now I have a real roadmap instead of just banging my head against the wall. Will definitely update once I make some progress! 💪
