EDD name change process after marriage - UI Online confusion

Got married last month and need to update my last name with EDD for my ongoing claim. Has anyone successfully changed their name through UI Online? I've looked everywhere on the website but can't find a clear option for name changes. When I go to 'Contact EDD', there's nothing specific about name updates. Do I need to call them (dreading this), submit some special form, or is there a hidden menu somewhere? I'm worried about my payments getting messed up if my name on the claim doesn't match my bank account. Any advice would be super helpful!

I went through this last year! Unfortunately, UI Online doesn't have a self-service option for name changes. You HAVE to call EDD directly and speak with a representative to update your name. They'll need your marriage certificate information and other verification. Make sure you have your Social Security card with your new name too, as they'll ask for that information. The name change has to be processed through their system manually.

Ugh, I was afraid of that. Been trying to call for 3 days with no luck. Do you know if I can just keep certifying under my old name for now? I don't want to mess anything up.

congrats on getting married!! i didnt change my name with edd until after my claim ended honestly... just kept everything under my maiden name to avoid confusion. less paperwork that way lol

Thanks! I'm tempted to do that but my bank account is already under my new name and I'm worried about potential issues with the payments. Did you have your payments going to an account with your maiden name too?

You actually need to submit form DE 1101, the "Claimant Name Change" form. You can find it on the EDD website under Forms and Publications. Fill it out completely, attach a copy of your marriage certificate or court order showing your name change, and mail it to the address listed on the form. Keep copies of everything you send. The online system unfortunately can't process name changes - it's an older system with limitations. The form takes about 10-14 business days to process once they receive it.

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. I'll download the form today and get it sent out asap. Really appreciate the detailed info!

That form worked for me too but it actually took them almost a month to process mine last year! EDD is so slow with paperwork stuff, just be prepared to wait.

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THE WEBSITE!!! I spent hours looking for a way to change my name online and there ISN'T ONE! I finally got so frustrated I just showed up at the local EDD office with my marriage certificate and ID. They still told me I needed to speak to someone on the phone. The whole system is a JOKE. They make everything 100x harder than it needs to be.

omg yes!!!! the website is so confusing, half the links dont even work right

While the system can be frustrating, the DE 1101 form that was mentioned above is actually the correct way to handle this. In-person offices generally don't process UI account changes anymore - that's handled by the central UI division.

If you can't get through to EDD by phone, I really recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). Saved me hours of frustration when I had to update my personal info a few months ago. They have a service that calls EDD for you and connects you when an agent is available. I was skeptical but it actually worked - check out their demo video: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Much better than redial-hell for days.

I've never heard of that service before. Is it legitimate? I'm a bit nervous about using third-party services for something related to my unemployment claim.

Totally get the concern! I was hesitant too, but they just help you get through to an actual EDD rep - you still talk directly with EDD yourself. For me it was worth it after wasting 3 days trying to get through on my own.

Just wondering - did you already change your name with Social Security? Because that's what you need to do first before updating with EDD. The whole process is a pain, I had to do: 1. Social Security first 2. Then DMV for driver's license 3. Then bank accounts 4. Then EDD If you try to change your EDD name before Social Security, they'll just tell you to come back after SS is updated. Been through this nightmare already!

Yes, thankfully I did Social Security first thing! Already got my updated card and changed my license and bank accounts. EDD is the last thing on my list but seems to be the most complicated for some reason.

Update to my earlier comment - I just checked and the DE 1101 form is now available for online submission through UI Online Document Upload feature. Login to your account, look for "Upload Documents" option, select "Other" as document type, and attach your completed DE 1101 along with your marriage certificate. This should be faster than mailing it in. Still expect 7-10 business days for processing.

This is fantastic news! So much easier than mailing it. I'll try the upload option right now. Thank you for the update!

one thing nobody mentioned... make sure ur email is up to date before doing anything else!!! i forgot to update my email when i got married (changed my last name on email too) and missed important EDD notifications cuz they were still going to my old email address

That's a really good point I hadn't thought about. I'll double check my contact info is current before submitting anything. Thanks for the tip!

I just went through this exact process two months ago! Here's what worked for me: I used the DE 1101 form through the online document upload like Diego mentioned - it's definitely the way to go now. Make sure you scan your marriage certificate clearly (I had to resubmit mine because the first scan was too blurry). One tip: call the EDD number right after you upload the documents to confirm they received everything. I got through after about 45 minutes of calling and the rep was able to see my uploaded docs in their system and gave me a confirmation number. The whole process took about 2 weeks total. Also, don't stress about continuing to certify under your old name while it's processing - they actually told me to keep doing that until the name change was complete to avoid any payment delays.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! The confirmation number tip is genius - I would have never thought to call after uploading to verify they got it. Did you have any issues with your bank account having your new name while EDD still showed your old name during those 2 weeks? That's my biggest worry right now.

@Sofia Gomez This is super detailed and helpful, thanks! Quick question - when you called to confirm they received your documents, did you use the general EDD number or is there a specific number for name change inquiries? I ve'been dreading the phone calls but getting a confirmation number sounds worth it. Also really relieved to hear I can keep certifying under my old name while it processes - that was my biggest concern!

Just wanted to add my experience from when I changed my name after getting married last year. I used the DE 1101 form upload method that several people mentioned here, and it worked great! One thing I'd recommend is making sure your scanned documents are super clear - I used a scanner app on my phone and made sure the lighting was good. Also, when you fill out the DE 1101, be really careful with the spelling of your new name because any typos will delay the process. I actually printed it out, filled it by hand in black ink, then scanned it back in to make sure everything was legible. The whole thing took about 10 business days once I submitted it. And yes, definitely keep certifying under your old name until you get confirmation that the change went through - EDD specifically told me this when I called to check on the status. Good luck with everything!

Thanks for sharing your experience! The scanner app tip is really smart - I was just going to use my phone camera but a dedicated scanner app would probably give much clearer results. Did you have any trouble getting through when you called to check the status, or were you able to reach someone relatively easily? I'm still nervous about the phone calls but it sounds like it might be worth it for peace of mind.

Just wanted to share what I learned when I went through this process about 6 months ago! The DE 1101 form upload method everyone's talking about is definitely the best route now. A few additional tips from my experience: 1) Make sure your marriage certificate copy shows the official seal clearly - mine got rejected the first time because the seal was cut off in my scan. 2) If you have a hyphenated last name now, be extra careful about how you write it on the form - use the exact format that's on your new Social Security card. 3) I actually got a faster response (about a week) when I uploaded everything on a Tuesday morning around 10am - not sure if timing matters but seemed to help! The peace of mind of having everything match up across all your accounts is totally worth the paperwork hassle. Congrats on your marriage btw!

Thank you so much for all these detailed tips! The seal visibility issue is something I definitely would have missed - I'll make sure to check that carefully when I scan my marriage certificate. The hyphenated name formatting tip is also super helpful since that's exactly my situation. I'm planning to submit everything tomorrow morning following your Tuesday timing suggestion - fingers crossed it helps! Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here, it's made this whole process feel much less overwhelming. And thank you for the congratulations! 😊

I went through this same process about 4 months ago and wanted to share what worked for me! The DE 1101 form upload method is definitely the way to go. Here's my step-by-step process: 1) Download the DE 1101 form from EDD's website 2) Fill it out completely by hand in black ink (print clearly!) 3) Get a high-quality scan/photo of both the completed form and your marriage certificate - make sure the official seal is fully visible 4) Log into UI Online, go to "Upload Documents", select "Other" as document type 5) Upload both documents 6) Call EDD within a day or two to confirm they received everything (I got through after about an hour of calling around 8am) The whole process took about 12 business days from upload to completion. During that time, I kept certifying under my maiden name as instructed by the EDD rep I spoke with. No issues with payments even though my bank account was already under my married name. One thing that really helped was keeping detailed notes of when I submitted everything and the confirmation number the rep gave me when I called. Made it much easier to reference if I had needed to call back. Good luck and congrats on your marriage!

This is such a comprehensive guide, thank you! I love that you included the step-by-step process - it makes everything feel so much more manageable. The tip about calling around 8am is really smart, I wouldn't have thought about timing mattering for getting through to them. I'm definitely going to follow your exact process and keep detailed notes like you suggested. It's so reassuring to hear that you had no payment issues even with the name mismatch during processing. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all these details!

Hey everyone! I just successfully completed my name change with EDD last month and wanted to share some additional insights that might help. The DE 1101 form upload method is definitely the best approach, but here are a few things I learned that weren't mentioned yet: 1) If you're uploading on mobile, use the desktop version of UI Online instead - the mobile upload can be glitchy. 2) Save your uploaded documents with very specific filenames like "DE1101_NameChange_YourLastName.pdf" and "MarriageCertificate_YourLastName.pdf" - this apparently helps their processing system. 3) After uploading, screenshot the confirmation page showing your documents were received - super helpful if you need to reference it later. 4) When you call to confirm receipt, ask for the specific date they expect processing to be complete, not just "7-10 business days." I got a firm date and it was actually ready a day early! The whole thing took exactly 9 business days for me. Also, pro tip: if you're planning any other life changes (address, bank account, etc.), wait until after the name change is fully processed to avoid confusing their system. Hope this helps and congrats on your marriage! The bureaucracy is annoying but totally worth it to have everything matching. 🎉

This is amazing advice, thank you so much! The filename tip is brilliant - I never would have thought that could make a difference in their processing system. I'm definitely going to use the desktop version for uploading since I was planning to do it from my phone. The screenshot tip is also really smart for keeping records. I love that you got a specific completion date when you called - that's so much better than just getting a vague timeframe. Thanks for mentioning about waiting on other changes too, that could have saved me from making things more complicated! Really appreciate all the detailed tips from everyone in this thread. You've all made what seemed like an impossible process feel totally doable! 🙏

Wow, this thread is incredibly helpful! I'm in a similar situation - just got married 3 weeks ago and have been putting off dealing with the EDD name change because I was so overwhelmed by the process. Reading through everyone's experiences has given me so much confidence that I can actually handle this. The DE 1101 form upload method sounds way more straightforward than I expected. I especially appreciate all the detailed tips about document scanning, filename conventions, and calling timing. One quick question for anyone who's been through this - did you need to provide any additional documentation besides the marriage certificate, like a copy of your new Social Security card or driver's license? I want to make sure I have everything ready before I submit. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - this community is amazing! 💕

Welcome to the name change club! 😊 From my experience last year, you typically only need the DE 1101 form and your marriage certificate for EDD. They don't usually require copies of your new Social Security card or license since they can verify that info through their system connections with SSA. However, it's always good to have those documents handy when you call to confirm receipt of your upload - sometimes the rep might ask for your new SSN or license number for verification purposes. Just make sure your SSA name change is completely processed before submitting to EDD (sounds like you've got that covered already). The marriage certificate is really the key document they need to see. Good luck with everything - you've got this! 🎉

I'm going through the exact same situation right now! Just got married two weeks ago and have been dreading dealing with the EDD name change. This thread has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea about the DE 1101 form or the document upload option. I was planning to spend hours on hold trying to call them. Quick question for everyone who's successfully done this: should I wait until I get my updated bank cards with my new name before submitting the form, or is it okay to proceed while my bank account still has the old name on the cards but new name in the system? I'm worried about creating some kind of verification mismatch. Thanks so much for all the detailed advice everyone has shared - you've turned what seemed like an impossible bureaucratic nightmare into something actually manageable!
