EDD name change on UI Online after marriage - how long does processing take?
I just got married last month and officially changed my name with Social Security. Now I need to update my last name with EDD since I'm still on an active unemployment claim. Has anyone done this through UI Online? I found the name change option under 'Profile,' but after submitting the form with my marriage certificate upload, it just shows 'pending review' for the past 10 days. How long did it take for your name change to be processed? I'm worried because I have a certification coming up next week and don't know if I should certify with my new name or old name. Don't want to mess anything up!

congrats on getting married! i did this back in november after changing my name. it took like 3 weeks for them to update it in the system. keep certifying under your OLD name until you get the confirmation email that your name change is complete. if u use your new name before its official in their system it can cause payment delays

•3 weeks?? Ugh that's so much longer than I expected. Thanks for the tip about sticking with my old name for certification. Did you have any issues with your payments during that time?

I work for a benefits assistance service and see this situation frequently. You're doing the right thing by updating your name, but EDD name changes typically take 14-21 business days to process. Always certify using the name currently in their system (your maiden name) until you receive official confirmation. When your name is updated, you'll get both an email notification and a message in your UI Online inbox. If you need to check on the status before your certification date, you might want to contact EDD directly. Many people have success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a representative quickly - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

•This is EXACTLY why the EDD system is so frustrating! Why should it take 3+ weeks to process a simple name change when SSA does it in days?! I went through this nightmare last year and my payments got delayed for a MONTH because of their bureaucratic nonsense. The whole system needs to be overhauled.

Make sure you also changed your name with your bank! I changed mine with EDD but forgot about my direct deposit info and my payment got returned. Total headache.

•Oh I didn't even think about that! Thanks for the heads up - I did already update my bank accounts but need to double check my direct deposit info with EDD once the name change goes through.

The name change process through UI Online can be confusing. Here's what's happening: After you submit the documentation, it goes to a specific document processing team. This team verifies your marriage certificate against your SSA update before approving the change in the EDD system. To avoid certification issues: 1. Continue certifying with your OLD name until you receive confirmation 2. After approval, update your payment information if needed 3. If you haven't heard anything after 15 business days, call the EDD identity verification department at 866-401-2849 One important detail: If your certification falls right when the name change is processing, you might see a temporary payment delay while their system updates. This is normal and should resolve within the same payment cycle.

•A month?! That's crazy. I was hoping it would be faster since I submitted everything online. Did you have to keep calling them or did it just happen automatically after waiting?

When I called about my name change taking forever, I spent 3 days trying to get through on the phone. No one EVER picks up! So frustrating.

•That's unfortunately common. If you need to speak with a representative and can't get through using the regular number, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). They connect you with EDD agents without the endless busy signals - helped me get through when I had a similar issue. They have a quick demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

Just as a follow-up on name changes - EDD doesn't automatically update your name even if SSA has the change. The systems don't communicate directly. You must submit the change request to EDD separately, which you've done correctly by uploading your marriage certificate. Another tip: save a screenshot of your name change submission confirmation. Some claimants have reported the request disappearing from their account during processing, and having that screenshot can help if you need to call about the status.

•Thank you! I took a screenshot when I first submitted it, so I have that saved. Really appreciate all the helpful advice from everyone. I'll keep certifying with my old name and just wait for the confirmation email before changing anything else.

I went through this exact same process about 8 months ago! The waiting is definitely nerve-wracking, especially when you have certifications coming up. From my experience, it took about 18 business days for EDD to process my name change after marriage. Here's what I learned: definitely keep certifying with your maiden name until you get that official confirmation email. I made the mistake of trying to certify with my new name before it was processed and it flagged my account for review, which delayed my payment by two weeks. Also, once your name change is approved, double-check that all your information matches across the board - direct deposit, mailing address, etc. Sometimes the system updates some fields but not others. Good luck and congratulations on your marriage!

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really helpful to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing. 18 business days sounds about right based on what others are saying too. I'm glad I asked here before making any mistakes with certification - sounds like using the new name too early could have really messed things up. I'll definitely double-check everything once it's approved. Thanks again and I appreciate the congratulations!

I'm going through the exact same situation right now! Filed my name change request about a week ago after getting married and updating with SSA. It's reassuring to see that 2-3 weeks seems to be the normal timeframe based on everyone's experiences here. I was starting to worry that something went wrong since there's been no update on the status. One question for those who've been through this - did you get any kind of intermediate update or does it just stay "pending review" until it's fully approved? Also, has anyone had issues with their claim being put on hold during the name change process, or does everything continue as normal as long as you keep using your old name for certifications? Thanks for posting this question - super helpful to see all the responses!

•Hey Sean! From what I've seen in this thread and other posts, it typically just stays "pending review" the whole time until you get that confirmation email - no intermediate updates unfortunately. As for your claim being put on hold, it shouldn't happen as long as you keep certifying with your current name in their system (your maiden name). The name change processing happens separately from your regular claim activities. I'd definitely follow the advice everyone's given here - stick with your old name for certifications until you get official confirmation, then update everything at once. Good luck with your name change!

I just went through this same process about 6 months ago! The waiting period is definitely stressful, especially when you're worried about messing up your certification. Mine took exactly 22 business days to process - longer than I expected but seems pretty typical based on what I'm seeing here. One thing I wish I had known beforehand: even after you get the confirmation email that your name change is approved, it can take an additional 24-48 hours for all the systems to fully sync up. So don't panic if you still see your old name in some parts of UI Online right after approval. Also, make sure to keep all your documentation handy even after approval. I had to re-upload my marriage certificate about a month later when there was some kind of system glitch that temporarily reverted my name back. Having everything saved made it much easier to resolve quickly. Hang in there - the process is slow but it does work! And definitely follow everyone's advice about sticking with your maiden name for certifications until you get that official confirmation.

•Thanks for sharing that detail about the 24-48 hour delay for systems to sync up after approval - that's really good to know! I hadn't thought about the possibility of system glitches reverting the name back either. I'll definitely keep all my documentation saved and easily accessible. It's helpful to hear that 22 business days is within the normal range, even though it feels like forever when you're waiting. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here - makes me feel much more confident about the process!

I'm currently dealing with this exact situation too! Just submitted my name change request through UI Online about a week ago after getting married. It's so helpful to read everyone's experiences here - sounds like 2-3 weeks is pretty standard, which makes me feel better about the wait time. One thing I'm curious about - for those who've gone through this, did EDD require any additional documentation besides the marriage certificate? I uploaded mine but I'm wondering if they sometimes ask for other proof like updated driver's license or passport. Also, has anyone had success checking the status by calling that identity verification number someone mentioned earlier? Thanks for asking this question! The responses have been super informative and reassuring. Definitely going to stick with my maiden name for certifications until I get that confirmation email.

•Hi Camila! I went through this process earlier this year and from my experience, the marriage certificate was the only document EDD required for the name change. They didn't ask for updated driver's license or passport - just the official marriage certificate uploaded through UI Online was sufficient. I think as long as you've already updated your name with Social Security (which you mentioned you did), that marriage certificate should be all you need. I haven't tried calling that identity verification number yet since I'm still within the expected timeframe, but it's good to know that option exists if needed. Definitely sticking with my maiden name for certifications based on all the advice here!

I'm in almost the exact same boat! Got married 6 weeks ago, updated with SSA right away, and submitted my name change request to EDD about 12 days ago. Still showing "pending review" and I have certification coming up this Friday. Based on all the responses here, sounds like I need to stick with my maiden name for certification until I get that official confirmation email. It's really frustrating that it takes so long when other agencies can process name changes much faster, but at least now I know what to expect timeline-wise. Has anyone noticed if submitting on certain days of the week makes a difference in processing time? I submitted mine on a Wednesday afternoon and wondering if that affects anything. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences - this thread has been incredibly helpful! I was starting to worry something was wrong with my submission.
