EDD won't let me change my last name after marriage to file SDI claim. Help!
I recently got married and need to update my last name on my EDD account to file an SDI claim, but the system won't let me change it. Has anyone else dealt with this? What should I do when I finally get through to an agent?

I found a way to solve EDD name change after marriage, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVQUnGGVuxk

Congrats on tying the knot! 💍 I went through this last year. You'll need to provide documentation to update your name. When you talk to an agent, have your marriage certificate ready. They'll guide you through the process. It's a bit of a hassle, but it's doable!

•Thanks for the advice! Did you have to mail in your marriage certificate or could you upload it online?

•In my case, I had to mail it in. But that was last year, so things might have changed. Definitely ask the agent if there's an online option now!

•Pro tip: send it certified mail if you have to mail it in. You don't want important docs like that getting lost in the system!

Ugh, the EDD system is such a nightmare. I swear it's designed to make everything as difficult as possible. Good luck with your name change, OP. You're gonna need it. 🙄

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Anyone else tried it?

•Yeah, it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

•idk man, seems kinda sketchy to me. What if they steal your info?

•Nah, they don't ask for any personal info. They just do the calling for you. You only talk to the actual EDD agent.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all necessary documents (marriage certificate, ID, etc.) 2. Try calling early in the morning, right when they open 3. Be patient and polite with the agent 4. Ask about the specific process for updating your name 5. Inquire if there's an online option or if you need to mail documents 6. Get a reference number for your call 7. Follow up if you don't see changes within a week or two Remember, persistence is key with EDD. Don't give up!

have u tried turning it off and on again? 🤣 jk jk... but seriously, sometimes logging out and back in can refresh the system. might be worth a shot before you go through the whole calling ordeal

PRO TIP: While your waiting for the name change to go through, you can still file your SDI claim under your maiden name. Just make sure to notify them about the pending name change when you file. It's better to get the claim started than to wait for the bureaucracy to catch up.

anyone else feel like we're living in the stone age with these government systems? like, hello, it's 2023, why can't we just update our info online? 🤦♂️

Whatever you do, DON'T just create a new account with your married name. It'll cause all sorts of problems down the line. Trust me, I learned this the hard way. 😭

I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago! The key is to be super prepared when you call. Have your marriage certificate, old and new ID, and Social Security card ready. The agent will likely need to verify your identity with both names. Also, ask them to put notes in your file about the name change so if you have to call back, the next agent knows what's happening. The whole process took about 2 weeks for me once I got through to someone. Hang in there - it's frustrating but totally doable! 💪

•This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you for the detailed breakdown. I'll make sure to have all those documents ready. Did you have to update your name with Social Security first, or could you do it all at the same time with EDD?

I had a similar issue when I got married two years ago! The EDD system is definitely frustrating with name changes. One thing that helped me was calling the EDD technical support line first (not the regular claims line) - they were able to flag my account for a name change which made the process smoother when I finally got through to a regular agent. Also, make sure you've already updated your name with Social Security before trying to change it with EDD - they usually require that to be done first. The whole process took me about 3 weeks total, but once it was done, everything worked smoothly. Don't let the system discourage you - you've got this! 🎉

•This is such great advice! I didn't even know there was a separate technical support line. That's genius to get your account flagged first. And good point about updating with Social Security first - I was wondering about the order of operations for all this. Thanks for sharing your experience and the encouragement! 😊

Hey Alana! I just went through this nightmare myself a few months ago. Here's what worked for me: First, make sure you've updated your name with Social Security Administration - EDD won't process the change without that being done first. When you call EDD, ask specifically for the "name change department" - they have specialists who handle this stuff. Also, have your marriage certificate, old ID, new ID, and Social Security card all ready to go. The agent will need the certificate number and issue date from your marriage license. One more tip: if the first agent says they can't help, politely ask to be transferred to a supervisor. Sometimes the regular agents aren't familiar with the name change process. It took me 3 calls but I finally got it sorted out. Don't give up - you'll get there! 💪

•This is incredibly helpful! I had no idea there was a specific "name change department" at EDD. That's definitely going to save me time instead of getting bounced around to different agents. The tip about having the marriage certificate number and issue date ready is super practical too - I would have never thought to have those specific details on hand. Thanks for taking the time to share such detailed advice from your experience! 🙏

I'm dealing with the same issue right now! Just got married three weeks ago and EDD's system is being such a pain. Reading through all these comments is giving me hope though. I think I'll try calling that technical support line first like Emma suggested - that sounds like a really smart approach to get the account flagged before dealing with the regular claims department. Also definitely going to make sure I have my Social Security name change done first. This whole thread is a goldmine of info! Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. Sometimes it really helps to know you're not alone in dealing with these bureaucratic headaches! 🤗

•Welcome to the married life and the EDD name change club! 😅 It's so reassuring to see everyone sharing their experiences here. I'm actually going through something similar myself - haven't gotten married yet but I've been helping my sister navigate this exact process. One thing I'd add to all the great advice here is to keep a detailed log of every call you make (date, time, agent name if they give it, reference numbers, what was discussed). It's been super helpful for my sister when she had to call back and reference previous conversations. Also, don't be afraid to ask the agent to repeat important information or spell out reference numbers - better to double-check than have to start over! Good luck with everything! 🍀
