EDD: Hours cut at work, how does this affect my unemployment claim?
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a situation and could use some advice. My employer just cut my hours at work, and I'm wondering how this affects my unemployment claim. Has anyone dealt with this before? What should I do next?

Ugh, that sucks. I've been there before. First thing you should do is report the change in your hours to the unemployment office. They'll probably adjust your benefits based on your new income. Don't wait on this or you might end up owing money back!

•This ☝️ Report it ASAP! I made the mistake of waiting and had to pay back a bunch. Not fun 😭

•It took about 2 weeks for me, but I've heard it can vary. Keep certifying in the meantime!

Make sure you document EVERYTHING. Keep a record of your old schedule, new schedule, and any communication from your employer about the reduction in hours. You might need it later if theres any disputes.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the unemployment office! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

•Totally get the skepticism, but yeah, it's legit. I was desperate after trying for weeks and it actually worked. Saved me hours of hold time.

Depending on your state, you might be eligible for partial unemployment benefits. Check your state's unemployment website for info on 'underemployment' or 'partial benefits'. Don't assume you're not eligible just cuz you're still working some hours!

•This! I'm getting partial benefits and it's been a lifesaver. Definitely look into it, OP!

Have you considered looking for a new job? The job market is pretty hot right now in some fields. Might be worth exploring other options if your current employer is cutting hours.

•Yeah, I've started putting feelers out. Just worried about how a job change might affect my unemployment claim if I can't find something right away.

•Smart move. Just remember to report any job search activities when you certify for benefits. Good luck! 🍀

Here's what you need to do: 1. Report the change in hours to unemployment ASAP 2. Keep certifying for benefits every week 3. Document everything (schedules, communications, etc.) 4. Look into partial unemployment benefits 5. Consider appealing if your benefits are reduced unfairly 6. Keep job hunting - some employers are offering signing bonuses 7. Check if you're eligible for other assistance programs (food stamps, etc.) Remember, the unemployment system can be a pain, but don't give up. You've got this! 💪

Hey Amelia! I went through this exact same situation last year when my restaurant cut my shifts from 5 days to 2 days a week. Here's what I learned: you'll likely qualify for partial unemployment benefits since your hours were reduced through no fault of your own. The key is to report the change immediately when you do your weekly certification - don't wait! They'll calculate your partial benefits based on the difference between your old wages and new wages. Also, make sure to keep all documentation about the hour reduction (emails, schedules, etc.) because sometimes they ask for proof. The good news is you can still collect benefits while working reduced hours, which really helped me bridge the gap until I found something better. Hang in there! 💪

•Thanks for sharing your experience, Mary! That's really helpful to know. Quick question - when you reported the hour reduction, did you have to provide any specific forms or just update it during your regular weekly certification? I want to make sure I do this right the first time 🤞
