EDD 1099G discrepancy shows $8200 more than I received - can't access BOA account for proof

I'm dealing with an absolute nightmare trying to correct my 2020 EDD tax documents. My 1099G shows I received $8200 more in unemployment benefits than what was actually paid to me. I finally got through to an EDD rep today who said 'funds were released' (whatever that means), but now I can't access my Bank of America EDD debit card account to get statements proving what I actually received. I've called BOA's EDD card department three times and they keep telling me to contact EDD. Then EDD tells me to contact BOA. It's a ridiculous circle of blame with nobody helping. I desperately need those BOA statements to amend my taxes and stop paying taxes on money I never received! I know I should have handled this sooner, but I lost my brother unexpectedly in early 2022 and honestly just couldn't deal with bureaucratic nightmares during that time. Has anyone successfully gotten old BOA EDD card statements? Or found another way to prove to the IRS what you actually received vs. what's on the incorrect 1099G?

I'm sorry for your loss. The BOA/EDD loop is frustrating but there's a solution. For the 1099G discrepancy, you need to file a correction request directly with EDD using their "1099G Protest Form" - don't just rely on BOA statements. You can download this form on the EDD website under Forms and Publications. For the Bank of America EDD card statements, don't call their regular customer service. You need to specifically call the CA EDD BOA card service at 1-866-692-9374 and request transaction history for 2020. They're required to provide this information even for closed accounts. Make sure to have your card number, SSN, and address that was on file ready. If BOA still refuses, ask EDD for a "Payment History Report" which lists every payment they sent to your account. This can substitute for the BOA statements when dealing with the IRS.

Thank you for these specific suggestions! I didn't know about the 1099G Protest Form - that sounds exactly like what I need. The BOA number I've been calling is their EDD card service (same one you listed), but they keep saying my account is "closed due to inactivity" and they can't help. I'll try again and specifically ask for the 2020 transaction history using those exact words. Is the Payment History Report something I can request online or do I have to call EDD for that too? I'm so tired of waiting on hold for hours.

omg i had the EXACT same problem last yr!!! my 1099g was like $4500 more than i got. BoA is THE WORST. they told me my account was "purged" whatever that means lol. i ended up having to go to an actual EDD office in person with ID and everything. they printed out all my payment history right there. took like 2 hrs of waiting but at least i got it done in 1 day instead of playing phone tag 4ever. bring water and a phone charger if u go that route!!

Going in person is actually a great idea I hadn't considered. Do you know if I need an appointment? And did you have to bring any specific documentation besides your ID? Going in person and getting it resolved in one day sounds way better than these endless phone calls.

The discrepancy might be because of the extra $600 weekly FPUC payments from the CARES Act that were added to regular UI in 2020. A lot of people forget to count those when calculating what they received. Check if that might explain the difference before going through the hassle of correction forms. For accessing old BOA statements: If you previously set up online access, try the password recovery option on the prepaid.bankofamerica.com/eddcard site. Even for closed accounts, sometimes you can still access 18-24 months of statement history online.

I actually did include the $600 FPUC payments in my calculations - I kept really detailed records of every deposit since things were so tight financially. The 1099G is definitely showing payments I never received. I tried the password recovery on the BOA site multiple times but it says my card is no longer active and won't let me proceed with account recovery. It's so frustrating that they can send tax documents for money but then make it impossible to verify what was actually paid.

this is why I ALWAYS print my statements every month!!! the government "loses" records all the time when it benefits them. not surprised at all that your 1099G magically shows more money than you got. they just want more tax money from you!!!

While keeping good records is absolutely important, the discrepancy is more likely due to a system error than anything malicious. During the pandemic, EDD's systems were completely overwhelmed and errors like this happened frequently. I've helped dozens of clients with similar issues and in nearly all cases, it was resolved once the correct documentation was provided.

I had a similar issue getting through to EDD about my 1099G last month. After 30+ calls with no luck, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD representative in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The EDD agent I spoke with was able to send me my complete payment history report on the spot, which showed exactly what payments were made to my account. I used that to dispute the incorrect 1099G amount. Saved me so much time and frustration!

That sounds really helpful! I've literally spent hours on hold this week alone. Does the service just connect you directly to an EDD rep who can handle tax document issues? I'll check out that video. At this point I'm willing to try anything that saves me from more endless hold music.

Tax professional here. The proper way to resolve this is a two-step process: 1. First, request your official EDD payment history (not just BOA statements). You'll need form DE 8726, Request for Unemployment Insurance Payment History. This document is accepted by the IRS as proof of actual benefits received. 2. Once you have that, file form 3949-A with the IRS to report the discrepancy and include your payment history as supporting documentation. If the difference is exactly $8200, you should check if you received PUA (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance) at any point. There was a known issue where some claimants who transitioned between regular UI and PUA had duplicate amounts reported on their 1099G. Regarding the timing - the IRS generally allows amendments for up to three years after the original filing date, so you should still be within the window to correct this for tax year 2020.

Thank you so much for this professional advice! I did receive PUA for part of 2020 after my regular UI ran out, so that might explain the issue. I'll request the DE 8726 form right away. It's such a relief to know I'm still within the timeframe to fix this - I was worried it might be too late. Really appreciate your expertise!

Omg I'm so sorry about your brother. Please don't be hard on yourself about the timing - grief is a journey that doesn't follow deadlines. I lost my mom in 2021 and literally couldn't look at anything financial for almost a year. EDD mistakes were RAMPANT during 2020. Half my coworkers had issues with their 1099Gs. One thing that worked for me was sending a written request (certified mail) to both EDD and BOA demanding my records under the California Consumer Privacy Act. Companies have to respond to these requests. I specifically asked for "all payment records and transaction histories associated with my EDD claim and BOA debit card for tax year 2020." Both sent me complete records within 30 days.

Thank you so much for your kind words about my brother. It means a lot. Some days are still really hard. The California Consumer Privacy Act request is a brilliant idea! I didn't even think of that angle. I'm going to try the other suggestions first since they might be faster, but if those don't work out, I'll definitely try the CCPA approach. It's good to have multiple options. Thanks for understanding about the timeline too - it helps to know I'm not alone in struggling with administrative tasks during grief.

Bank of America is the absolute WORST for handling the EDD cards!!! when my claim ended they just shut down my account with NO WARNING and I couldn't see any of my old transactions. I had to call them like 7 times and finally got someone who told me I could request paper statements by mail but it would cost $5 per month I wanted. such a ripoff but I needed them for my taxes

Just an important clarification - Bank of America shouldn't be charging $5 per statement for EDD debit card accounts. Under their agreement with the State of California, they're required to provide at least one free statement copy per request for closed accounts. If they tried to charge you, you should dispute that and reference the California EDD Debit Card Account Agreement which specifies the free statement policy. Many customer service reps aren't properly trained on the EDD-specific policies.
