Will EDD release my second PFL payment if first direct deposit bounced due to wrong account number?

So frustrated right now! I just realized I made a stupid mistake with my bank account number when I set up direct deposit for my baby bonding PFL payments. My first payment (from 2 weeks ago) got returned to EDD because of this error. I immediately corrected my banking info through the EDD portal yesterday, but I'm supposed to get my second payment tomorrow. Does anyone know if they'll hold both payments now or will the second payment go through to my corrected account while they figure out how to resend the first one? I really need this money to cover daycare for my older child while I'm on leave with the baby. The EDD website is zero help on this specific situation!

This happened to me last spring with my maternity leave payments. EDD will process your second payment on schedule to your newly updated bank info, but the returned payment takes about 10-14 days to be reissued after it bounces back to them. You'll eventually get both payments, but they'll be separated by a couple weeks.

Thank you! That's somewhat of a relief. Did you have to do anything special to get them to reprocess the returned payment, or did it just automatically show up eventually?

Have you tried calling them? I'm considering it but I've heard the wait times are insane.

They ALWAYS hold both payments when this happens!! My sister's coworker had this problem last year and ended up waiting 6 weeks to get any money at all. EDD system is such garbage, they punish you for one tiny mistake. You should call them ASAP and demand they release at least one payment while they sort it out. They can do it manually if a supervisor gets involved.

This is incorrect information. If you've already updated your direct deposit information correctly in the system, your next scheduled payment will process normally to the new account. Only the returned payment goes into a special reprocessing queue. Please don't spread misinformation about the process - it just causes unnecessary stress for new parents already dealing with enough!

I had exactly this problem two months ago with my PFL baby bonding. The second payment DID go through to my corrected account, but I had to call about the returned first payment. Took me 3 days of calling to reach someone who could help - their phone system is absolutely terrible! When I finally got through, they were able to reissue the returned payment within 48 hours. Have you tried Claimyr? It's the only way I managed to get through to an actual human at EDD. It connects you directly to an agent without the endless wait. Saved me so much stress with my newborn! Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 and their site at claimyr.com - it works for all EDD claim types including PFL.

Thanks for this! I'll check out that service if I can't get through tomorrow. I'll be calling right when they open. Did they make you verify anything special when you finally reached someone?

when this happened with my disability before switching to baby bonding, the 2nd payment went through fine but the first one they had to mail as a paper check even tho I fixed the direct deposit. took about 3 weeks total

Ugh I hate when EDD messes up payments. I swear their system is designed to make everything as complicated as possible. Had a similar issue when transferring from pregnancy disability to bonding time. Get ready for hours of useless hold music if you try calling them!

To be fair, in this case it was a user error with the account number, not an EDD system problem. But you're right that their customer service is incredibly difficult to reach.

Here's the official process: When a direct deposit is returned due to incorrect account information, EDD automatically places that specific payment in a special queue for manual handling. Meanwhile, your future payments will continue to process normally to your corrected account information. You should see your second payment deposit as scheduled tomorrow if you've already updated your banking information in the system. The first payment typically takes 7-10 business days to be reissued after it's returned to EDD. They may either redeposit it electronically or mail a physical check, depending on their internal processing. If you don't see your second payment tomorrow, or if it's been more than 10 business days since the first payment was returned, then you should contact EDD directly for assistance.

This is SO helpful - thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll watch for the deposit tomorrow and give it a couple weeks for the first payment. It's a relief to hear they don't just freeze everything because of one error.
