EDD PFL missing second payment for husband's baby bonding - 3 weeks no check!
Help! My husband started his baby bonding PFL in late January after our twins were born. He got his first payment about a month ago, but we're still waiting on his second payment. It's been almost 3 weeks since that first check came and nothing else has shown up. He's been trying to call EDD daily (sometimes 5-6 times!) but either gets disconnected or sits on hold until the office closes. We're starting to really stress about bills since we budgeted for these payments to come regularly. Has anyone experienced delays between payments like this? Did we miss certifying something? The online account shows his claim is active but doesn't explain the payment delay. This is so frustrating!

•Oh jeez, I didn't even think of that! I'll have him check right now. I thought they just automatically processed these once approved. Thanks for the tip!

This is a common issue with baby bonding PFL claims. The system requires biweekly certifications, but unlike UI, the EDD portal doesn't always clearly show when they're due. Your husband should: 1. Log into his SDI Online account (not the regular UI Online) 2. Go to the 'New/Additional Claims' tab 3. Check if there's a certification form waiting 4. If not, submit a contact request through the portal AND keep calling If he certified but payment is still delayed, it could mean there's a verification issue they haven't notified you about yet. Unfortunately, phone contact is essential to resolve this.

•Thank you - we just checked and there WAS a certification waiting! We had no idea. He completed it right away. Do you know how long it typically takes for payment to process after certifying?

OMG I HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM!!!! The certification thing is SO CONFUSING with PFL compared to disability. When I was on pregnancy disability leave before my baby bonding, the payments just came automatically. Then with PFL they suddenly wanted certifications but never told me!!! I lost almost 3 weeks of payments because I didn't know I needed to certify. Such a stupid system.

•RIGHT?? like why would they make it different between SDI and PFL??? makes no sense. and they send zero notifications about needing to certify. my sister missed a whole month of payments because of this nonsense.

After you complete the certification, payment typically takes 3-5 business days to process, though it can sometimes take up to 10 days. Make sure your husband's contact information is current in the system. One thing that trips people up: If your husband is doing the full 8 weeks of baby bonding PFL, make sure he submits that final certification even if it's for less than a full two-week period. Many people miss their final partial payment because they don't realize they need to certify for those last few days.

•That's really helpful, thank you! We'll watch for the payment and make sure to remember the final partial certification. The EDD website doesn't explain any of this clearly.

I went through this exact nightmare last year with my wife's claim. Calling EDD is literally impossible - I spent 4 days straight trying to get through. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 25 minutes. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 The EDD rep confirmed we had missed a certification and helped us get the claim back on track. Honestly wish I'd known about this service weeks earlier - would have saved us so much stress and waiting.

•is this legit? seems kinda sketchy that you have to pay to talk to a govt agency you should be able to reach for free..

It's definitely legit - they don't work for EDD, they just have a system that keeps dialing and navigating the phone tree until they get through, then they call you and connect you. I was skeptical too but was desperate after not getting through for over a week. The rep I talked to actually helped fix our certification issue on the spot.

•Thanks for sharing this. If we have any more issues after submitting the certification, we might try this. It's ridiculous that we'd need to pay someone to help us reach a government agency, but at this point we just need the payments to come through!

my husband did baby bondig pfl last year and we noticed the payments were super inconsistant. sometimes 5 days after certifying sometimes like 12 days! no rhyme or reason. EDD is a total mess but the money always came eventually.

•That's actually reassuring to hear. I can deal with inconsistent timing as long as the payments do eventually come through. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Quick question for anyone who knows - does the first payment usually take longer than subsequent ones? My husband is about to start his PFL next month after our baby arrives and I'm trying to budget correctly. Thanks!

•Yes, the first payment typically takes 2-3 weeks after approval because they're establishing the claim. Subsequent payments should be faster (3-5 business days after certification) but as others have mentioned, it can be inconsistent. I recommend budgeting as if payments will be delayed by at least a week to be safe.

Just checked back - did your husband receive his payment after completing the missed certification? If it's been more than 10 business days, there might be another issue that needs addressing.

•Yes! We got the payment 4 days after submitting the certification. And now we're watching for the next certification period. Thanks everyone for your help - this forum saved us from weeks more of confusion!

So glad you got it sorted out! This is exactly why I always tell people to check for pending certifications first when PFL payments are delayed. The EDD system is notorious for not sending clear notifications about when certifications are due. For anyone else reading this thread - another tip is to set calendar reminders every 2 weeks from your PFL start date to check for certifications, even if you don't get notified. It's much easier to stay on top of them proactively than to chase down missed payments later. Hope the rest of your husband's leave goes smoothly with the twins! Having that financial stress lifted makes such a difference during what should be a special bonding time.

•That's such great advice about setting calendar reminders! I wish I had known about this proactive approach when I was going through my own PFL claim last year. I ended up missing a certification and had to deal with the whole mess of getting payments restarted. Setting those biweekly reminders would have saved me so much stress and probably a couple weeks of delayed payments. Definitely going to share this tip with friends who might need PFL in the future!

This thread is incredibly helpful! I'm currently on maternity leave through SDI and planning to transition to PFL for bonding time in a few weeks. Reading about the certification requirements has been eye-opening - I had no idea PFL worked differently than regular disability payments. I'm definitely going to set up those calendar reminders that Aisha mentioned. It's frustrating that EDD doesn't make this clearer, but at least now I know what to expect. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - it's going to save me (and probably my husband when he takes his PFL later) from the same payment delays and stress you all went through!

•Welcome to the PFL journey! You're so smart to research this ahead of time. I wish I had known about the certification differences before my husband started his leave. One thing I'd also suggest is taking screenshots of your online account once you submit each certification - it helps you keep track of what you've done and when, especially if there are any disputes later. The transition from SDI to PFL can be a bit confusing administratively, but knowing about the biweekly certifications puts you way ahead of where we were! Good luck with your bonding time when it starts.

•@Grant Vikers hi hopefully I can get a response. I’m in the same boat. I switched to family paid bonding and only received 2 days worth of pay when I submitted my application. It’s been 14 days today and there’s nothing in my account. My claim is active and the only forms I have are reestablishing bonding and claimant change. I see there is a certification process mentioned. Which form would that be?

I'm going through a very similar situation right now! My wife just started her baby bonding PFL two weeks ago and we're already confused about the certification process. After reading this thread, I immediately went to check her SDI Online account and sure enough, there's a certification form that's been sitting there for 3 days that we had no idea about. It's absolutely ridiculous that EDD doesn't send any kind of email notification or text alert when these certifications are due. How are people supposed to know? We got so used to the automatic payments during her pregnancy disability that we just assumed PFL would work the same way. Thank you all for sharing your experiences - this thread literally just saved us from weeks of payment delays and frustration. Going to set up those biweekly calendar reminders right now!
