EDD PFL payment sent to wrong account number - how long for reissue?

Help! My husband is on baby bonding PFL and his first payment got sent to the wrong account. He mixed up our account numbers (they're literally one digit different) when he entered his direct deposit info. The bank already returned the payment to EDD on Nov 28th. Does anyone know how long it takes for EDD to reprocess these returned payments? Will they automatically try again with the same account number or send a paper check instead?\n\nWe're seriously stressed about paying bills. His claim was approved on Oct 23 and we didn't get notification about this payment until Nov 30, only to discover it went to the wrong place. Called EDD 14 times today but can't get through to anyone. Any advice??

This happened to me last year. They'll usually send a paper check automatically once the direct deposit is returned, but it can take 7-10 business days. Call the PFL helpline at 877-238-4373 to confirm this is what will happen in your case. Make sure you have your husband's claim ID and the date the payment was returned ready when you call.

Thank you! That's a relief to hear they'll send a check. Have been trying that number all day but it's constantly busy or disconnects me. Will keep trying tomorrow morning!

omg the same thing happnd to me but with sdi before my pfl started!!! took forEVER to get fixed. like 3 weeks. they ended up mailing me a check after i called like 20 times. so frustrating!!! baby was already 2 weeks old by then lol

THREE WEEKS?? Oh no, we can't wait that long. Did calling actually help speed things up? Our little one is already 5 weeks and we're burning through savings.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but EDD's system for handling returned payments is TERRIBLE. They don't automatically reissue - the payment gets stuck in a limbo status until someone manually reviews it. This happened to me with both PFL and SDI (wrong account number both times - I'm an idiot). First time took 4 weeks, second time took 3 weeks to resolve.\n\nYou ABSOLUTELY NEED to speak with a claims specialist. The regular representatives can't help with returned payments. You need to specifically ask for the \

That's exactly what I was afraid of. Did you just keep calling their main number until you got through? Any tricks for getting past the constant busy signals?

I had such a nightmare with this exact situation! I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD agent after days of trying on my own. They have this system that calls EDD for you and then connects you when they get through. Saved me hours of busy signals and disconnections. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 \n\nOnce I got through to an agent, they were able to track down my returned payment and expedite a paper check that arrived about 5 days later. The key is getting to talk to an actual person who can see what's happening with the payment.

does that actually work? seems sketchy to have some company call edd for u

It did work for me - they don't handle any of your personal info beyond your phone number. They just connect the call once they get through EDD's phone system. Still had to provide all my verification info directly to the EDD agent myself.

Just checked this out - might be worth it if I can't get through tomorrow. At this point I'll try anything! Thanks for the suggestion.

To give you the technically correct answer: When a payment is returned due to incorrect banking information, EDD's standard procedure is to place the payment in their

Thank you for this detailed explanation! This is super helpful. I'll make sure his address is updated in the system right away. Now I just need to figure out how to actually reach a claims specialist...

my cousin works for edd (not pfl specifically) but she says that system is completley broken rn and theyve got a huge backlog of these return issues. people who had direct deposit issues in octobr are just now getting fixed. hate to say it but 3-4 weeks is probably realistic unless you can get someone on phone

This matches what I was told too. Someone at EDD explained they're dealing with a system update that happened in September that's causing all kinds of payment routing issues. The person who finally helped me said their returned payment processing team is severely understaffed.

Oh great, that's all we need - a system issue on top of our mistake. Guess we'll be calling our landlord to explain why rent will be late. Again.

Just wanted to add - make sure your husband completes his bi-weekly certifications even while waiting for the payment issue to be resolved. I made the mistake of thinking I should wait until the wrong payment was fixed before certifying for new weeks, and it created a whole separate problem with my claim.

That's a great point! I'll remind him to keep certifying. His next certification is due this Sunday actually.

One more important tip: When you do get through to EDD, ask them to update his direct deposit information in the system immediately. Even though they'll likely send a paper check for the returned payment, you want to make sure future payments go to the correct account. Also, request they add a note to his file about the situation so other representatives can see what's happening if you need to call back.

Will do! He went in and updated his direct deposit info already, but I'll definitely ask them to confirm it's correct and note his file. Thanks!

UPDATE: Finally got through to EDD this morning! Called right when they opened at 8am. The rep confirmed the payment was returned and is being reprocessed as a paper check. Should arrive within 7-10 days. They also verified his direct deposit info is now correct for future payments. Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

Great news! Glad you got through and got it resolved. The 7-10 days is pretty standard for their check processing, in my experience.

Fingers crossed it comes on the sooner end! Thanks again for your help.
