EDD PFL portal confusion - husband's baby bonding claim missing but mine shows up?

Hey everyone! So my husband took 4 weeks of baby bonding PFL back in February 2025, and now he's trying to file for his remaining 4 weeks (our little one is 6 months now). The weird thing is when he logs into his EDD portal, there's absolutely no record of his previous claim! It's like it never happened, even though he received benefits. The system is only letting him file a completely new claim. Meanwhile, I just logged into MY account to file for my final 2 weeks of PFL, and I can clearly see my previous claim and there's a form specifically for continuing my existing claim. We're super confused about why his account shows nothing about his past claim. Is it normal to file a brand new claim for the second portion of baby bonding? Or did something get messed up? We're so worried about making a mistake that would delay payments since we've budgeted pretty tightly around these dates. Anyone dealt with this before?

This happened to my husband too! The EDD system treats mens' and womens' claims TOTALLY differently for some reason. For my husband, he had to file a completely new claim for his second portion of baby bonding leave. The system doesn't show the history for men like it does for women who gave birth. It's weird and frustrating but from what the EDD rep told us, that's just how their system works. Just make sure he enters all the same information as the first claim (same child, same reason) and it should process fine.

Omg thank you!! That's such a relief to hear it's not just us. Did he have any delays with his second claim? We're really counting on this money coming through on time.

The PFL system is super outdated and glitchy. I've seen this exact issue before - it seems to happen most often with secondary caregivers (usually dads). If you filed originally as a "bonding with new child" claim, you need to file the exact same way again. Just be super careful that all the information matches EXACTLY - child's birthdate, your employment info, everything. One tiny mismatch can trigger a review that adds weeks to processing.

Thanks for the tip on making sure everything matches! I'll double check all his info before he submits. I just wish the system was more consistent between accounts.

I work in HR and see this ALL the time with our male employees. Your situation is completely normal! The EDD system distinguishes between the person who physically gave birth (you) and other parents/caregivers (your husband). For birth mothers, the system links pregnancy disability leave to PFL baby bonding, creating one continuous claim record. For non-birth parents, each PFL period must be filed as a separate claim, even if it's for the same child within the 12-month period. Just have your husband file a new claim and make sure to indicate it's for the same child. This is actually beneficial because it means he doesn't need to have used all 8 weeks consecutively!

This is SO helpful! Makes perfect sense now why our accounts look different. We thought maybe there was a glitch in his account specifically.

BE CAREFUL with refiling!!!!!! My husband had this EXACT problem and when he filed a new claim they DENIED it because they said he already had a claim for that child!!! Took us SIX WEEKS of calling EVERY DAY to get it fixed. The system is totally broken!!!!

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about! Did you eventually get it resolved? We really can't afford any delays.

I had a similar issue last month. The correct procedure is: 1. Your husband should file a new claim, selecting "Bonding with New Child" as the reason 2. When asked if he's taken any previous PFL for this child, select YES 3. Enter the dates of his previous leave 4. Make sure all child information matches EXACTLY with the previous claim If he does this correctly, the system will recognize it as a continuation. But be prepared - sometimes they will still request additional documentation like proof of relationship to the child again, even though they shouldn't need to.

Thank you for the step-by-step! I'll make sure he follows this exactly. Might have him screenshot everything too just in case.

omg the same thing happened to us except my husband's claim was rejected when he refiled! we called for 3 days straight before we finally got through. apparently you need to check the box that says youve already taken some time with this child or they'll deny it as a duplicate claim. the whole system is so confusing

Yes, this is a critical step! If you don't check that box, the system treats it as a duplicate claim for the same event rather than a continuation.

just went thru this last month with my bf. he had to file a brand new claim and it went thru fine, got paid in 10 days. the lady at edd told me the systems different for birth moms vs other parents. something about birth moms being in the disability system first which connects differently to pfl. your husband should be ok filing new claim.

10 days would be amazing! Good to hear it worked out smoothly for you guys.

Just wanted to add some clarification about why this happens: - For birth mothers: You transition from SDI (State Disability Insurance) pregnancy claim to PFL baby bonding. The system links these because they're related to the same pregnancy/birth event. - For non-birth parents: You only qualify for PFL baby bonding (not SDI), so each period is treated as a separate claim event in their system. It's confusing but actually works correctly once you understand the distinction. Just have your husband complete the DE2508 form again and make sure to note the previous claim period when asked.

Thanks for explaining the technical reason! Makes a lot more sense now - I didn't realize the linkage between SDI and PFL was what made my experience different from his.

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! My partner took his first 4 weeks of bonding leave in January and we're trying to file for his remaining weeks. His EDD account shows absolutely nothing from his previous claim, which had us panicking that something went wrong. Reading through everyone's responses is such a relief - sounds like this is totally normal for non-birth parents. We were worried we'd have to start from scratch and potentially lose out on the remaining time. Going to have him file a new claim today and make sure to check that box about previous leave for the same child. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences! This community is a lifesaver when the EDD system is so confusing.
