Just filed for PFL with EDD - what should I expect? Any tips to speed up the process?
Hey everyone, I just filed for Paid Family Leave and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this? How long did it take for you to hear back from EDD? Any tips on speeding up the process or what to expect? I'm a bit nervous about the whole thing and could use some advice.

I filed for PFL about 2 months ago. It took them around 3 weeks to process my claim and start sending payments. Make sure you've submitted all the required documentation - that can help speed things up.

ā¢3 weeks? You're lucky! Mine took almost 6 weeks to process š© EDD is so slow sometimes

ā¢What kind of documentation did you need to submit? I'm about to file and want to make sure I have everything ready.

ā¢I had to submit proof of relationship (for bonding leave), my last paystub, and a form filled out by my doctor. Double check the EDD website tho, it might vary depending on your situation!

Pro tip: keep calling EDD until you get through to a rep. It can take forever, but it's worth it if you have any questions or issues with your claim. I spent like 3 hours on hold but finally got some answers.

ā¢I found a way to get someone on the phone without the wait. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's my experience with PFL: ⢠Filed online - took about 30 minutes to complete the application ⢠Received a confirmation number immediately ⢠Got a letter in the mail after 1 week asking for additional docs ⢠Submitted the extra paperwork online within 2 days ⢠Waited... and waited... for about 4 weeks ⢠Finally got approved and received my first payment Total time from application to first payment: about 5-6 weeks. Hope this helps give you an idea of the timeline! Good luck!

ā¢This is super helpful, thanks for breaking it down! Did you have to do anything special to get them to process it in 4 weeks?

ā¢Honestly, I think I just got lucky. I made sure to fill out everything correctly and respond to their requests quickly. But from what I've heard, processing times can vary a lot.

ā¢Nah, I think it's just underfunded and understaffed. Still sucks tho

Quick question - does anyone know if you can work part-time while on PFL? I might need to pick up a few hours here and there.

ā¢I'm pretty sure you can, but it might reduce your benefit amount. Check the EDD website or call them to be 100% sure.

ā¢Be careful with that. A friend of mine got in trouble for not reporting some part-time work while on leave. Better to disclose everything upfront.

Just a heads up, EDD is really backed up right now due to all the covid stuff still. My claim took 2 months to process š Hopefully yours goes faster!

Has anyone had luck getting their employer to supplement their PFL benefits? I heard some companies do that but mine is being stingy š

ā¢My company does! They cover the difference to make it 100% of my normal pay. Maybe check your employee handbook or talk to HR?
