I just went through this last month! It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad. What specific questions do you have?

•Thanks for responding! I guess my main question is how long did the whole process take for you? And did you have any issues with your employer?

•The whole process took about 3 weeks for me from application to approval. My employer was pretty supportive, but I know that's not always the case. Make sure you give them plenty of notice!

•3 weeks isn't bad at all! I'll definitely give my boss a heads up ASAP. Any other tips you can share?

•Sure! Make sure you have all your medical documentation ready before you apply. And don't forget to follow up regularly - sometimes things can get lost in the shuffle.

ugh, good luck dealing with the bureaucracy. I've been waiting on my claim for months now 🙄

Hey there! I found a method to get someone on the phone about paid family leave. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

•Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

•I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it's legit. Saved me hours of hold time.

•20 bucks tho? 🤔 Is it really worth it?

•For me, it definitely was. Time is money, and I was going crazy trying to get through on my own.

Make sure you understand the difference between FMLA and paid family leave. They're not the same thing!

•Oh, I didn't even realize there was a difference. Can you explain a bit more?

•Sure! FMLA is unpaid leave that protects your job, while paid family leave provides partial wage replacement. They can be used together, but they're separate programs.

Pro tip: start gathering all your documents now. Birth certificate, medical records, employment info - you'll need it all. Trust me, it'll save you headaches later!

Here's a comprehensive guide to applying for Paid Family Leave: 1. Check Eligibility: - Verify you've paid into State Disability Insurance (SDI) through payroll deductions - Ensure you have a qualifying event (new child, caring for a family member, etc.) 2. Notify Your Employer: - Give at least 30 days notice if possible - Get any necessary paperwork from your HR department 3. Gather Documentation: - Birth certificate or adoption papers (for bonding leave) - Medical certification (for caregiving leave) - Proof of relationship to the person you're caring for 4. File Your Claim: - Apply online through the EDD website for fastest processing - Or submit a paper application by mail 5. Provide Additional Information: - Respond promptly to any requests from EDD - Submit any additional forms they may require 6. Wait for Approval: - Processing typically takes about 2 weeks - You can check your claim status online 7. Receive Benefits: - Benefits are usually paid every two weeks - You can choose direct deposit or debit card Remember, you can take up to 8 weeks of PFL in a 12-month period. The benefit amount is about 60-70% of your weekly wages, up to a maximum amount. Good luck with your application!

•Quick question - does anyone know if the 8 weeks have to be taken consecutively?

Lena Müller
•Great question! The 8 weeks don't have to be consecutive. You can break them up as needed within the 12-month period.

Has anyone had experience applying for PFL for mental health reasons? Like caring for a family member with depression?

•Yes, it's possible but can be trickier. Make sure you have solid documentation from a mental health professional.

I actually just started my PFL application last week! One thing I wish I had known earlier is to make copies of EVERYTHING before you submit. I had to resubmit some forms because they got lost in the system. Also, if you're doing this for bonding with a new baby, make sure you coordinate with any employer-provided maternity/paternity leave - sometimes they can run concurrently which is really helpful for maximizing your time off. The online portal isn't the most user-friendly, but it's definitely faster than mailing everything in. Feel free to reach out if you have specific questions as I navigate this process!
