Need help extending PFL from 2 weeks to 1 month - any advice?
Hey everyone, I need some advice. I'm trying to extend my paid family leave from 2 weeks to a full month. Has anyone gone through this process before? What steps did you take? Any tips or things to watch out for? I'm not sure where to start and could really use some guidance.

I went through this last year. It's not too complicated, but there are a few steps: 1. Contact your HR department ASAP. They'll have the forms you need. 2. Get a doctor's note explaining why you need the extension. 3. Fill out the extension request form (your HR should provide this). 4. Submit everything at least a week before your current leave ends. 5. Follow up with HR if you don't hear back within 3 business days. Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions.

•This is super helpful, thanks for sharing! Do you remember how long it took for your extension to get approved?

•It took about 5 business days for me, but I've heard it can vary. Definitely start the process early just in case!

•Did you have any issues with your benefits during the extension? I've heard horror stories about paychecks getting messed up 😬

•Thankfully, I didn't have any paycheck issues. But yeah, I've heard those stories too. It's a good idea to keep an eye on your bank account and payroll portal just to be safe.

ugh, good luck dealing with HR. I swear they make everything 10x more complicated than it needs to be 🙄

Have you checked your company's policy? Some places have different rules for extending leave. Mine required a whole new application process for anything beyond the initial period.

•I haven't looked into it yet, but that's a good point. I'll dig up the employee handbook and see what it says. Thanks for the tip!

Just a heads up, I tried to do this last month and got denied. Apparently, our company has a cap on how long you can extend PFL. Make sure you check if there are any limitations before you get your hopes up.

•That sucks, I'm sorry to hear that. Did they give you any other options or was it just a flat-out no?

•They suggested using my vacation days to cover the extra time. Not ideal, but better than nothing I guess 🤷♂️

Hey guys, I know this is frustrating but I found a way to actually get someone on the phone about this stuff. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

•Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

•20 bucks? No way, I'd rather sit on hold for hours 🙄

•I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me so much time and frustration. Worth every penny imho

•How long did it take for them to actually connect you with someone?

•It took about an hour and a half, but I didn't have to actively wait on hold. They called me when an agent was on the line.

idk if this helps, but when I extended my leave, I had to provide extra medical documentation. Make sure you have all your ducks in a row before you apply!

This whole system is so broken. Why do we have to jump through so many hoops just to take care of our families? 😤

•Preach! 🙌 It's like they want us to choose between our jobs and our loved ones.

Has anyone tried negotiating with their manager directly? I managed to get an unofficial extension by working out a part-time arrangement for a few weeks.

•That's an interesting idea. I hadn't thought about a part-time option. I'll definitely bring that up if the full extension doesn't work out. Thanks!

Whatever you do, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Every call, email, form you submit. Trust me, it'll save you headaches later if there are any disputes.

I'm going through the same thing right now! Just wanted to add that you should also check if your state has any additional protections beyond what your employer offers. California's PFL program through EDD sometimes has different rules than company policies. I called the EDD directly and they were actually pretty helpful in explaining what I was entitled to vs. what my HR department was telling me. Don't just rely on your company's interpretation - double check with the state agency too!

•This is such good advice! I didn't even think about checking with EDD directly. I've been assuming my HR department knew everything, but you're right - they might not have the full picture. Did you find any differences between what your company was saying vs what EDD told you?
