Need help filing PFL claim with EDD - what to expect when calling?
Hey everyone, I need to file a claim for Paid Family Leave and I'm not sure where to start. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What should I expect when I call to open a claim? Any tips or advice would be really appreciated!

I just went through this last month! Here's what you need to have ready: • Your Social Security Number • Your address and contact info • Your employer's name and address • Your last day of work • Medical certification if it applies to your situation When you talk to the agent, make sure to clearly state that you're opening a new claim for Paid Family Leave. They'll guide you through the rest, but don't be afraid to ask questions if anything's unclear. Good luck!

•Thank you so much! This is really helpful. Did they ask for any specific forms or additional info when you called?

•No problem! They didn't ask for any specific forms when I called, but they did send me some paperwork to fill out afterwards. Just be prepared to answer questions about your employment and the reason for your leave.

•Quick question - how long did the whole process take for you? I'm trying to plan ahead for my leave.

•It took about 2-3 weeks from when I first called to when I got approved. The call itself was pretty quick, maybe 20-30 minutes. Just make sure you follow up on any paperwork they send you ASAP!

Ugh, good luck getting through to anyone on the phone. I've been trying for weeks and keep getting disconnected or put on hold forever. 😤

•I feel you! The phone system is a nightmare. I found a workaround though - there's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials through the menu, waits on hold, and then connects you when a real person picks up. It costs $20 but honestly it was worth it for me. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

•Wait, seriously? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

•I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Just sharing what helped me out!

•I'm skeptical... how do we know this isn't just some scam to get our info?

•I get the skepticism, but it's legit. They don't ask for any personal info beyond your phone number to connect the call. You can look up reviews online if you're unsure. It's just a tool to get past the hold times.

Make sure you double check the eligibility requirements before you call! I thought I qualified but turns out I hadn't worked enough hours in the past year. Such a waste of time 🙄

Anyone know if the process is different for bonding leave vs caring for a sick family member? I'm in the latter boat and wondering if I need anything extra.

•For caring for a sick family member, you'll need a medical certification from their doctor. The form is called DE 2501F. You can find it on the EDD website.

•Thanks! That's super helpful. Do you know if I need to have that form filled out before I call to open the claim?

•You don't need it filled out before you call, but you'll need to submit it within 41 days of starting your leave. Better to get it done sooner though!

Pro tip: if you're having trouble getting through on the phone, try calling right when they open in the morning. I got through in like 5 minutes doing that!

•What time do they open? Might have to set an alarm lol

•They open at 8am Pacific Time. Set that alarm! ⏰

Is it just me or has the whole process gotten more complicated since COVID? I swear it used to be easier...

•Yeah, the system is def more overwhelmed now. But hang in there, it's still doable!

DONT FORGET TO WRITE DOWN YOUR CLAIM NUMBER WHEN THEY GIVE IT TO YOU!!! You'll need it for everything and it's a pain to get it again if you lose it.

Has anyone used the online system to file instead of calling? Is it any easier?

•I tried the online system and it was okay, but I still ended up having to call for some questions. Might be worth a shot though!

Friendly reminder to everyone: be nice to the agents when you get through! They're dealing with a lot and being kind can go a long way. 💖
