PFL for newborn: What to expect and prepare for EDD appointment?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to file for Paid Family Leave (PFL) for my newborn son. I've got an appointment scheduled with a representative to discuss my claim. Anyone have experience with this process? What should I expect? Any tips on what questions to ask or documents to have ready?

Congrats on the new baby! 🎉 I went through this last year. Make sure you have all your ID docs ready - driver's license, social security card, etc. Also, have your employment info handy (pay stubs, employer contact info). They'll probably ask about your last day worked and when you plan to return.

•Thanks for the advice! Did they ask for any medical documentation from the birth?

•Yes! Totally forgot to mention that. You'll need the birth certificate or a document from the hospital with the birth date. Good catch!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

•Sounds too good to be true. How does it actually work?

•It's legit! You just put in your phone number, and they call you when they get an agent. Saved me hours of hold time.

•$20 seems steep for a phone call. Is it really worth it?

•For me it was. Time is money, and I was spending hours trying to get through. This way I could actually do other stuff while waiting for a callback.

Here's what you need to know about PFL: • You can get up to 8 weeks of partial pay • You must have earned at least $300 in wages that were subject to SDI deductions • You need to file your claim within 41 days of when you want your family leave to begin • Have your physician/practitioner complete the medical certification Make sure to ask about: 1. How long the processing time is currently 2. If there's any way to expedite the process 3. What happens if you need to extend your leave Good luck!

Pro tip: set up reminders for any follow-ups or deadlines they give you. It's easy to forget with a newborn keeping you busy!

•Pretty sure it's the same process, but you might need different documentation. Maybe adoption papers instead of birth cert?

Just went through this last month. One thing nobody told me: if you're planning to take your leave in chunks (like I did), make sure you clarify that upfront. It can affect how they process your claim.

Does anyone know if you can apply for PFL if youre self-employed? Asking for my brother whos a freelancer and just had twins 👶👶

•I think self-employed people can opt into SDI coverage, which would then make them eligible for PFL. But he'd need to have done that before the birth, I'm pretty sure.
