EDD PFL Claim: Care Recipient Can't Sign Form - What to Do?
Hey everyone, I'm having some trouble with my paid family leave claim. I submitted it back in January, but it hasn't been processed yet. The main issue is that the care recipient couldn't sign the form. Has anyone dealt with this before? What should I do if the person I'm caring for can't sign the paperwork? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Ugh, dealing with EDD is such a pain! I had a similar issue last year. Have you tried calling them? Sometimes talking to a rep directly can help sort things out faster.

•Pro tip: call right when they open. I got through after only 30 mins on hold that way!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site called claimyr.com - it's a calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it worked for me. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Here's what you need to do if the care recipient can't sign: 1. Write a letter explaining why they can't sign (e.g., medical condition, cognitive impairment) 2. Get a doctor's note confirming the care recipient's inability to sign 3. Include both documents with your claim form 4. Submit everything together, either online or by mail 5. Follow up with EDD after a week to ensure they received everything I went through this last year, and while it took some extra time, it worked out in the end. Good luck!

Have you considered reaching out to your local state representative? They sometimes have staff dedicated to helping constituents with EDD issues. Might be worth a shot!

•That's a great idea, I hadn't thought of that. Do you know how I'd find my rep's contact info?

•Just google '[your city] state representative' and it should come up. Most have contact forms on their websites.

OMG the EDD website is such garbage. I swear it was designed in 1995 and never updated. Anyone else have issues uploading documents?

Friendly reminder to everyone: DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Keep copies of all forms, note down every call (date, time, who you spoke to), and save all emails. It'll save your butt if theres ever a dispute.

•THIS. Cannot stress this enough. EDD 'lost' my forms twice. Thank god I had copies.

If the care recipient has a legal guardian or power of attorney, they might be able to sign on their behalf. You'll need to include documentation proving the legal relationship (like court papers or POA documents) along with your claim. I had to do this for my elderly parent and it worked, though it did add a few extra weeks to the processing time. Make sure to include a cover letter explaining the situation too!

•This is really helpful! I didn't know about the POA option. Do you happen to know if a medical power of attorney would work, or does it need to be a general POA? My situation involves caring for someone with dementia and we only have medical POA set up right now.
