How to get EDD PFL signature for incapacitated patient? Help needed
Hey everyone, I need some help with paid family leave. I'm trying to figure out how to get a signature for an incapacitated patient. Has anyone dealt with this before? It's really confusing and I'm not sure what to do. Any advice would be appreciated!

This whole system is a joke. I've been trying to navigate it for months and it's like hitting my head against a wall. When will they fix this mess? π€

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

β’Wait, you have to PAY to talk to EDD now? That's messed up.

β’It's totally legit. They're not affiliated with EDD, just a service that does the waiting for you. But I get the skepticism.

β’Honestly, it's a personal choice. Some find it worth the investment for the peace of mind it provides.

I've been through this before. It can be tricky, but there are ways to handle it. First, you need to check if the patient has a designated power of attorney. If they do, that person can sign on their behalf. If not, you might need to go through the courts to get a legal guardian appointed. It's a bit of a process, but necessary in these situations.

β’Absolutely, and if you decide to go the legal guardian route, it might be worth consulting with an attorney to ensure you understand all the legal implications.

β’Truly, it feels like the system is designed to test our patience. But hang in there, it's all worth it in the end.

Here's what you need to do, step by step: 1. Get a medical certification form filled out by the patient's doctor, detailing their incapacity. 2. If there's no power of attorney, you may need to file for conservatorship. This can be done through your local probate court. 3. Once you have legal authority, you can sign the PFL forms on behalf of the patient. 4. Submit all documentation together: PFL claim form, medical certification, and proof of your legal authority to sign. 5. Keep copies of EVERYTHING you submit. 6. Follow up regularly. Don't assume they received or are processing your claim. Remember, persistence is key. Don't give up if you hit roadblocks. Good luck!

Update: I tried calling again today and actually got through! The rep I spoke to said I need to get a court order for conservatorship before I can sign anything. Looks like I've got a long road ahead, but at least I know what to do now. Thanks for all the advice, everyone!

Have you considered getting a doctor's note explaining the patient's incapacity? That might help your case when dealing with EDD. Also, keep ALL your documentation. You never know what they might ask for later.

Thanks for the responses so far. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's a specific form I need to fill out for this situation? The EDD website is so confusing, I can't find anything clear about incapacitated patients.

β’It might help to check if there's a local EDD office you can visit in person. Sometimes face-to-face can cut through some of the red tape.
